Obama Plagiarizes Speech
Filed under: Barack ObamaBarack Obama has been criticized for plagiarizing a speech during a campaign stop this past weekend and not being upfront about it.
The similarities between the Democratic presidential hopeful and a speech made by by Deval Patrick, the current Democratic governor of Massachusetts, back in October 2006 are striking.
Barack blatantly copied several lines and linguistic speech patterns from Deval's "Just Words" speech for Obama's own "Words Matter" speech in Wisconsin.

From day one, to me, Obama has seemed like he'd make a great preacher or a great orator and speech giver. He doesn't have enough action and experience from his past to back up his words, so for me, his words don't inspire me to think he'd make a great President. Words become famous and inspiring when the person behind them proves themselves with action. Roosevelt, JFK and Martin Luther King had WAY more actions to back up their words. I've been through a lot of Presidential elections/presidencies, and Obama is no JFK or Martin Luther King… not yet, anyway.

But if you've been following/watching/listening to politics for decades, like me, Obama plays politics and the game just like all the rest. He's just way better at it than most. For someone who's entire campaign (for the most part) has been about inspiring people with his words and speeches, I think it's a mistake on his part to defend the power of HIS words, by using someone else's words, and making it appear that they were his own (the true definition of plagarism). He would have been smart to say, "And as my friend Patrick says, "Blah, blah, blah". I'm not saying this makes him a horrible person, but I do think it does say something about his character, and pokes a hole in his squeeky clean image of being 100% genuine. It's also not genuine to skip over parts of your life on your official webpage that you know would turn off a lot of Americans voters. That's not transparency, which he says he is all about.

It's not plagiarizing just because they're both using quotes that EVERYONE knows and uses all the time… they have the same TOPIC, the power of words: I think I'd end up using those same quotes if I had to write an essay about it. I just got through reading the article in the Gay German Magazine. The one I heard about a couple of blogs/days ago. (Now I am very against Obama on many levels, and read the article because the poster said it proved he was gay.) Well, that proved not to be the case. The magazine only discussed that Hillary comes on so strong, almost/nearly masculine on stage, that it makes Barack's softer, more mannered touch by default look more feminine in a sense. Well I can see this. So I started studying Obama more closely. Presently & in retrospect. With Gaydar up. And it tells me he just may be. First of all- He didn't plagiarize, because it wasn't written, and because Patrick is one of his supporters and close friends, and came forward and said that he and Obama throw ideas like that off of each other all the time, and he supports him using these words. Also, Obama didn't lie and say that he didn't use his words, he actually came out and said he did. UNLIKE Hilary, who stole OBAMA's words, and then lied and said she didn't.

Understand, a Hillary Clinton nomination would almost certainly mean Republican presidency; she and her husband are too polarizing on both sides of the political isles and would only re-energize a sluggish Republican party to get out and vote. You do realize that pretty much every politician has "borrowed" material from other politicians over the years and not credited the original speaker right? Very few politicians will say "As Mr. _____ said…" That doesn't flow. You can have similar ideas to someone and express them well. The controversy is lost on the Massachusetts governor, who endorsed Obama.
Obama's campaign had Patrick call the New York Times over the weekend and issue a statement.
"Senator Obama and I are long-time friends and allies. We often share ideas about politics, policy and language," Patrick said in the statement. "The argument in question, on the value of words in the public square, is one about which he and I have spoken frequently before. Given the recent attacks from Senator Clinton, I applaud him responding in just the way he did."
