Obama Plagiarizes Speech
Filed under: Barack ObamaBarack Obama has been criticized for plagiarizing a speech during a campaign stop this past weekend and not being upfront about it.
The similarities between the Democratic presidential hopeful and a speech made by by Deval Patrick, the current Democratic governor of Massachusetts, back in October 2006 are striking.
Barack blatantly copied several lines and linguistic speech patterns from Deval's "Just Words" speech for Obama's own "Words Matter" speech in Wisconsin.

if you watch the original news cast from ABC in which this was brought up, you'd also know that Deval and Barack share a campaign consultant by the name of David Axelrod. Who, when asked by Jake Tapert of ABC, replied that the two men who are friends, commonly riff off eachother and it is not unusual for their speeches to carry similar phrases.

Even if Obama made a mistake in not crediting Duval with this idea–it still pales in comparison to the nastiness that characterizes the Clintonian approach to politics. I'm still on his side.
The Obama campaign has issued a statement from Gov. Patrick: “Sen. Obama and I are long-time friends and allies. We often share ideas about politics, policy and language. The argument in question, on the value of words in the public square, is one about which he and I have spoken frequently before. Given the recent attacks from Sen. Clinton, I applaud him responding in just the way he did.”

Whether Perez is biased or not, this IS still plagerism, and it says something very important about Obama's character and political methods. I think much less of him now, as should his supporters, and this certainly should be taken into consideration when choosing a candidate. Although this is disappointing, I suspected Barack was this kind of person all along.

I don't think he plagiarized the speech. it seems more like he took his words matter and compared it to the other guy saying that they were just words. He took what someone said and added what he thought to it. What did the rest of the speeches say. Was it just that part that was the same? Maybe Obama had a reason for using a similar phrase to put an emphasis on what he was saying. This particular speech, in which you accuse him of plagiarism, is complete and utter bullshit. Gov. Patrick ENDORSES Obama, and their ideas are very similar. Says the Gov.: "Senator Obama and I are long-time friends and allies. We often share ideas about politics, policy and language," Patrick said in the statement.
As for "being upfront about it," the Obama campaign released this statement:
The campaign was "obviously not traumatized" by the discovery of the similarities, "which is why we're not putting out any official statement."

You are clearly a politically conscious individual who cares about the fate of this country. Because of this, I am shocked and disgusted by the blatant sensationalism of this post. Plagiarism is an extremely serious claim to level against anyone, but it is particularly irresponsible in light of the influence you have gained through this blog. In this post, you have violated the trust your readers place in you. There are striking similarities between Obama's and Patrick's speeches, yes. However, these similarities do not fall within the extremely particular definition of plagiarism. You also offer no indication in your text that both speeches are essentially a series of extremely well known quotations, or that Patrick has endorsed Obama. Your accusation is defamatory and comes off as petulant and uninformed. It saddens me that rather than create an intelligent discourse on the matter, you simply attacked a serious candidate for Presidential election. To smear him thus is not only irresponsible and desperate, but unbecoming of an intelligent and influential individual such as yourself.

NY Times and other notable more reputable news sources have checked and can confirm that Obama didn't steal anything and had permission.

I dont care how many speeches he copies, Hillary voted for bush's war over and over and has never admitted she made a mistake. Obama is a joke! If his supporters are interested in anything besides hero-worship they should start questioning him on things like this. He's clearly manufactured and does not stand for change of any kind, he's just good at saying he is. What a fraud, he's lost my vote.
The same consultant that worked for Deval Patrick is working for Obama so it is not suprising that the campaigns have similarities. Deval Patrick was elected Governor of Massachusetts after MA suffered through Mitt Romney. Like Obama, Patrick's campaign was about hope and change without lots of specifics. Once Patrick took office, the specifics proved problematic. How problematic? So far in this campaign, Obama has had the votes of upper middle class, educated Dems, while Hillary has had the working class Dems. By that logic, MA (post secondary school education capital of America) should have gone for Obama. Instead, MA went for Hillary by a fairly big margin. Many think that is because of disillusionment with the reality of Patrick's governance. And, just to be clear, I cribbed this argument from Gwen Ifill on Washington Week. I voted for Patrick and now, al I have to say is go Hillary!
