He may still be alive, but he's definitely no longer dictator of Cuba!
Fidel Castro has resigned.
The "President" announced his plans earlier today, in a statement published quietly overnight without advance warning in the online edition of the Communist Party daily Granma.
"I will not aspire nor accept—I repeat I will not aspire or accept—the post of President of the Council of State and Commander in Chief," said Castro.
The tyrant's brother, Raul, 76, is expected to take his place when the National Assembly meets this Sunday.
Fidel, 81, has not been seen in public since July of 2006.
His dark rule over the isle of Cuba lasted 49 years.

Statistics show that most people in Cuba are content there, have been watching interviews from Cubans here in the U.S. most would like to go back to Cuba. Preferring the fact that they provided, education, and health benefits freely.
Also Cuban Government does allow visas, and approves them very often, where they get rejected is in the U.S.

I've been to Cuba twice in the last 2 years, it's such a beautiful country, and the people are so nice. The ones we really talked to, liked Fidel, and his ways, they like that school is free, that there health is taken care of, they seem to enjoy the simple life, and knowing they are taken care of. Sure does beat worrying about hospital bills, I know I'm glad I don't have to worry about my next hospital visit either.
Hopefully this will be the beginning of democracy and freedom for the Cuban people! I'm so glad that Perez highlights the evil that is Fidel Castro! I am not even Cuban but I am excited for the Cubans nevertheless!

Re: cristi – I went to school in cuba and yes there is plenty that is wrong but there is also so much that is right. yes people are fearful but mostly are fearful of what they will lose when fidel is gone, because ultimately, he took care of his people. like i said, yes, there are and were problems, but by reading about cubas history you realize that all the real problems stem from how fucked over cuba was by the states, and you better believe that if the u.s. gets involved again, human rights violations and so much more are sure to ensue.

What a sad day, Cuba is one of earth's last remaining paradises that has been unspoiled by the powers that be (albeit the US military base at Guantonamo Bay). My grandparents were born and raisd there, and thank goodness, was able to vist often after they left. My grandmother longs for her mainland and hs the best of memories there. I've been twice, and my relatives and friends there love their country and Fidel Castro. Listen people, Castro fought for his country with all the best intentions- he was made into the madman that some in the US believe him to be by the American government. He liberated so many disenfranchised people there and in doing so, he ticked off many, especially the wealthy, oppressive Cubans who decided to flee and pay their way into the US. American Cubans have long given up their loyalty and rights to the Cuban island- no one there wants them back because THEY were the biggest oppressors to the poor and working class. US citizens get a very biased and untruthful description of Cuba and Fidel's leadership. I pray that US influences stay out of the great country of Cuba. Long live Fidel and much love !!!!

"If the Cuban leadership begins opening Cuba to meaningful democratic change, the United States must be prepared to begin taking steps to normalize relations and to ease the embargo of the last five decades. The freedom of the Cuban people is a cause that should bring the Americans together."

What I gather from my conversations with them is that SOME are unhappy with Castro but NOT EVERYONE, and most want nothing to do with America! To quote one lady exactly "America is not good for Cuba" They may not want to be under a communist leadership anymore, but they sure as hell don't want big America swooping in to "save" them either. ( Canada may be a different story….I see a lot of Canada flag tattoos on Cuban men)
P.S. You do realize they have free education and health care don't you? I also have to add, every time I go there, we go to the schools and bring them paper, books etc.. The children are always happy, HEALTHY, clean, and polite, just beautiful and a joy to be around. If the future of a nation can be judged on its children, the US has way more to worry about than Cuba.

For those espousing Cuba as having the best healthcare system in the world - if that was true then why would one of the receptionists at the hotel in Guardalava I stayed in have to ask me for a paracetemol, the most basic medicine there is? True, since the Castro regime Cuban medics have discovered a lot of new cures (presumably to show the Western world how great this Communist state is doing), but if the population itself has no medicine then what is the point? I really hope Cuba will begin to move towards a free and fair democracy now, but only time shall tell.
It's truly sad what's happening to my country. I don't think this means a change. He hasn't been a president for a while now and still nothing has changed. Most people there were born into his regimen, they don't know better. It's a shame but it's the reality. I lived there until 1998 and I will love one day to go back to a freeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Cuba. Further, maybe there is no discrimination against black people in Cuba (I really don't know) but there is definitely an apartheid between the Western tourists and the Cubans, which I'm not sure is any better! Just like in South Africa during apartheid, the Cubans weren't allowed on our tourist beach but had their own, far less pretty one. I also made a Cuban friend and he was too scared to come into the hotel or anywhere near the village I stayed in to meet, because if anyone told the police or whatever, he'd be in biggg trouble. This is a good thing, I personally cannot wait to go back to Cuba to visit my family that is still there. Cubans do not Hate Americans it is not a personal thing it is a government thing. Also, to those of you who said Cuba is better with Castro, ask yourself if you could live with 1 razor blade for months at a time, or 1 box of tampons for 3 months. The ration system in Cuba went haywire after the Soviet Union fell apart and they lost there major financial backers. Is Castro a well versed and respected leader, of course, does he have major faults absolutley, are those faults making life harder on Cubans living in Cuba who do have basic civil liberties? Without a doubt, censorship is horrendous in Cuba, and people need to learn about the culture, politics and people before they claim to have the solutions.

I agree Castro's no angel, however, I studied in Cuba in 2004 and the people there are some of the happiest I have ever seen. Americans were taught to hate Cuba since 1962 and all of our media sources have been pushing the evil communist message down our throats, teaching us to support the embargo as "punishment" for the Bay of Pigs. Cutting Cuba off from commerce to leave it isolated to rot, just because we could not control its government, is one of the greatest human rights violations of our time. Despite all of this, the government has managed to walk away with the best healthcare, education and AIDS programs in the world–even developing their own medications. If the US is so worried about the quality of life in Cuba, then why the fuck don't they lift the embargo already? Such a contradiction!

He did some wonderful things for his country and for the people of Cuba. He came up short with regard to certain freedoms, but overall, he was good for Cuba. And the fact that, as the leader of a small country, he stood up to the United States and its greedy entrepreneurs and capitalist imperialists, makes him a remarkable man.
