Liz Hurley and her husband, Arun Nayar have been recently accused of underpaying their Indian maid. They were reportedly paying the live-in maid, Violet d'Souza, less than $2.00 an hour! The legal minimum wage is London is £5.52, or about $8.17.

Violet, 31, was said to be working up to 70 hours a week and earning close to nothing. She would often work from 7:30am and at times not finish until 3:00am. She was brought to Britain by Nayar's family.
According to reports, d'Souza was going to take her case to an employment tribunal this Friday, but has dropped the claim after reportedly being offered a five-figure settlement agreement.
Violet was claiming "breach of contract, failure to supply a written statement of terms, race discrimination and unfair dismissal." She was also claiming back pay.
Hurley is said to be worth about $20 million, and her husband has millions himself, coming from a wealthy Indian textiles family.
For a couple worth in the millions, they couldn't even afford to pay their maid minimum wage?

Millions of maids from India and other poor countries are being exploited like this right now. Then you have Human Trafficking, where women are told they are going to be brought to another country for a much better salary than they could get at home, only to be sold into prostitution when they get there. The world is a sick place, and I hope that those (like Hurley) who take advantage of disadvantaged people who don't have money or many choices in life, get what's coming to them.

Obviously it is not because they can't afford it but the ruling Brahmin(sp?) Indian caste have always treated 'lesser' people, such as servants and the like with open contempt, ill-treating them as their norm. This is unsurprising.

This reminds me of a case from a few months ago where a rich couple from Long Island enslaved their maid.
I believe this other case was a lot worse…They had two undocumented women from Indonesia (who they brought here themselves). The women were beaten and cut with blades as punishment for minor things (like forgetting to dust one shelf, etc…)and both were subject to food and sleep deprivation. Both women were also forced to sleep on the floor in the garage and/or basement.
The women were paid $100 per month to send back to their families in Indonesia.
It doesn't matter if these people are 'illegal' or 'undocumented'. They are still PEOPLE.
Has anyone given a thought to what goes through the mind a a person planning to illegally enter another country?
Take the Mexicans coming into the United States through Arizona and California as an example. These people are crossing a 1000+ mile wide desert on foot. ON FOOT!!! I mean, that's pretty crazy-Most 'illegals' never even make it to the US alive!
Imagine-just for a second-how bad one's life must be if they think there is no way out of their suffering other than to risk their own life-To cross a huge, insane, unforgiving desert on foot. Imagine the people who DO make it across, and the people they knew and loved who didn't make it to the end of the journey.
