As someone said, they also left out Adrienne Shelly, who was nominated tonight. I think the show was put together at the last minute due to the writer's strike. The SAG awards were uneffected by the strike. I have a feeling that the OSCAR people just plain out forgot a lot of people.

In addition to Renfro, the following actors, while not primarily known for movies but who were all in movies, were also not among those by the academy (I think I'm right here…maybe Tom Poston, I can't remember): Tom Poston (married to Suzanne Pleshette, who was mentioned), Charles Nelson Reilly, Merv Griffin, Alice Ghosley, Brett Sommers, Joey Bishop, Robert Goulet.

Perez, you must be the most miserable person on the face of earth. Renee Z looked gorgeous. Nicole K looked gorgeous. Brad Renfro, may he rest in peace, was probably unintentionally omitted (it was bound to happen. there were at least 30 deceased indiv). So catty…

Vanessa,I dont agree with you..You know Heath was nominated for an ACADEMY AWARD in a leading role and Brad Renfro wasn't..Heath had more notable films than Brad..Both of them are young actors but Heath was more famous and more serious actor than Renfro.–but I think both of them deserved to be in Academy Award's IN MEMORIAM segment..

Brad Renfro died just before Health did. (1 week before) I think they should have included Brad as well…He may not have been as 'well' known, but he was a great actor. They both were…and like anyone that has passed, in this industry, a lot are faces we don't know…I think they should ALL be acknowledged, no matter how they've passed. Simple as that.

Re: alix – The actor who played Rufio (a now 30-something Dante Basco) didn't die. It was a man named Montague G. Westmore who did makeup for the movie Hook. For the lesser known non-actors who died and were honored, they showed a split screen; on one side was a picture of the deceased and on the other side was a picture of a movie they worked on. I guess they chose that big picture of Rufio to show some of Mr. Westmore's "achievement" in makeup, but it WAS kinda confusing of them to do that (even though they did flash his name and what his job was).

Re: CrzyToothFairy – I have to cosign on your comment about popular kids growing up to be jerks in Hollywood. I really respect Heath Ledger and don't want to see this whole thing turned into a "who's the most worthy dead person" contest, but considering Aaliyah (who I was also a big fan of) was honored in her year and there's no way she would have been invited to become a member of AMPAS after 2 or 3 mediocre movies…it HAD to be political. Partially a popularity thing and partially a measure to distance themselves from the ugly side of H-wood that half of them are probably neck deep in. This coming from a community of people who awarded a trophy to a fugitive ex-patriot who couldn't even enter the country to pick up his award without getting arrested (Polanski, Best Director for The Pianist). Anyway, it sucks. But I'm glad to hear BAFTA and SAG did the right thing by recognizing the talent and not the mistakes of a tragic young man.

  37. Mandi says – reply to this

    437

I don't think it was a snub Perez. He wasn't a member of the Academy. He was a SAG member of course, so he was included in that memorial but it's not a complete list of everyone who was ever in a movie or had something to do with one, it's a list of Academy members who died only. Nominees are automatically offered membership in the Academy, otherwise you have to be invited in. It would behoove yourself and your readers to do a quick google first of what it takes to become a member of the Academy before you go on a rant, don't ya think?

I remember specifically that Brad Renfro died earlier than Heath Ledger did. Imdb confirms that he died on Jan 15, '08, while Heath Ledger died on Jan 22 '08. Not acknowledging Renfro's death is totally ass thing to do, it's just stupid. I can't believe that the Oscars would do such an unclassy thing.

  54. Lyn B. says – reply to this

    454

The cut off date excuse doesn't really make any sense because Heath Ledger was included. He passed away after Brad Renfro. I was rather disgusted that he was left out, as well.

    456

I didn't know he died. They should of said so in the first place. They means someone, maybe? Noone will say on the oscars when I die. So maybe it's fair he wasn't mentioned. I don't care about rich or famous (or both) people dying. They piss me off as much as poor people do. I hate everybody.
I hate that herion is supposedly a less popular way to die than a doctor prescriped overdose. Society is pretty fucked up: There is a newsflash for ya.

  57. Grace1234 says – reply to this

    457

He was so wonderful, but never really got in the public eye. Those who knew him will remember him, no doubt. It's nothing big to be on a show when your life has been a changing point for so many people. He will be remembered in so many ways!

  58. disgusted in canada says – reply to this

    462

About the cutoff date of January 31st - Suzanne Pleshette and Heath Ledger were both included in the memoriam. Heath died Jan 22nd, Suzanne Pleshette died Jan 19th, and Brad Renfro died Jan 15th (these things usually occur in threes). Roy Scheider died in February. I think Brad wasn't included because he might not have been a member of the academy at the time of his death. The Oscars website lists all deceased academy members for the year (regardless of awards or nominations). Renfro's not on the list.

  63. kate says – reply to this

  67. Brahman says – reply to this

  87. What About Zahara? says – reply to this

    487

Hey guys…well I did some research because this was baffling to me because Brad Renfro was a great actor. Now this is for the people that say he wasn't in the memoriam because he wasn't nominated or associated with an Oscar nominated film…well it looks like the first movie he did was the Client, which warranted Susan Sarandon's Oscar nomination that year which he had to be associated with in some shape or form because the movie's focus was about his character. Secondly, Ghost World…that movie was nominated for the Golden Globes, Independent Spirit and the Academy Awards. It won two awards for the Independent Spirit Awards so that cancels out the assumptions that he was a shitty actor or that he wasn't associated with an Oscar nominated film. The only way I see it was that he simply was snubbed by the Oscars. They probably did the montage last minute and they just forgot about him. Poor Guy.

i noticed that immediately because i was waiting for a mention of him. i was really disappointed in the academy and hollywood in general when it didn't happen. and to the people that say it is because of an od, perhaps they should be reminded that ledger od-ed also. and pills used the wrong way are drugs just the same as heroin is.

Re: Emily – he died a week before ledger. he is relevant and should've been included.

    493

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Perez for mentioning him. I was appalled that the Oscars didn't even mention his name. He may not have been an "A-lister" but he was an incredible actor who gave us some great performances in his short time here and he deserved recognition last night. Shame on the Oscars.

  94. joe says – reply to this

    494

umm maybe because he was a complete nobody for one, i mean he wasn't even a b-grade actor, maybe a D if he was lucky. and he was douche who killed himself with drug, broke the law several times and ignored peoples attempts to help him

  95. mia says – reply to this

    495

He was not a prominent actor, rather obscure really. You won't see actors from soaps or game show hosts memorialized at the Oscars either. Kind of like Perez not being memorialized in the same frame as authors or journalists. It makes sense.

  96. Katie says – reply to this

    496

Umm probably because he wasn't Oscar worthy. Why would they mention him if he never was nominated for anything?! I still don't even know who he is!

  97. J. says – reply to this

    497

Some people here have commented that an actor has to have been previously nominated in order to be included in the memoriam tribute - I checked that out and it's not true. Suzanne Pleshette was mentioned and she was never nominated for an Oscar in her entire career, not even for her work in the Hitchcock film The Birds. So, since Brad died before their 'official' cut-off date of January 31st, and was obviously still eligible for mention even though he'd never been nominated, all I can guess is that there must be some COLD, hypocritical mofos in the academy. It's an insult to his memory, and I'm sure it was an insult to his friends and family too.

  98. Jessica says – reply to this

    498

I know! I was watching it.. At first I was happy to see they did with Heath Ledger and I was thinking okay they are gonna do Brad Renfro and nope they didn't.. Made me MAD! it like they don't care..

  99. Rebecca says – reply to this

    499

Was he ever nominated - or even in a movie that was nominated??

  100. Johanna says – reply to this

    500

I think they didnt show him in the tribute because he died in february. the tribute had the timeline february 1, 2007 until january 31, 2008. so they will put him in the tribute for next years oscars…. (btw, they could have made heath ledgers tribute a liiiiittle longer, since everybody knew him).
