There is a reason why he was left out, as I remember this happening in past years with different actors who passed away and were not mentioned. They only recognize actors who are members of the Academy. Most, but not all, actors are members, and Brad must not have been a member. No intentional snubbing.

They also forgot Adrienne Shelly, actress and director of Waitress, who was killed within this last year. bitches.

    Re: Karen
He died a week or 2 before Heath..that's why it's so weird

  6. AC says – reply to this

    506

Renfro died before Heath Ledger, both died before the cut-off date. Pretty sure it's just for former nominees.

    507

FIRST OF ALL HE DIED ON JANUARY 15TH!!!!!!! HE WAS MY FRIEND AND THE ACADEMY NEEDS TO APOLOGIZE! TO ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE SOMETHING NEGATIVE TO SAY, FUCK YOU!!! HE WAS AN AMAZING ARTIST AND A GREAT FRIEND. HE WAS CLEAN FROM HERION UNTIL THAT NIGHT. HIS HEART WAS BROKEN BECAUSE HE MISSED HIS SON, GET A CLUE AND STOP JUDGING OTHERS ESPICALLY WHEN YOU HAVE NO CLUE!!!!!!!

  8. Jessica says – reply to this

    508

I totally agree, I was like they forgot Brad, he was in Apt Pupil and The Client. Two noticably good movies.

    509

What a pack of assholes, when someone who once helped Al Pacino blow his nose on a film set 30 years ago they get a mention in that section usually, a really good actor who made a few mistakes and a lot of good movies dies really young and nothing, that's bollocks that is!!!!!!

  10. Skippy says – reply to this

    510

He was excluded because he wasn't a member of the Academy.

  11. me says – reply to this

    511

    That is fucked up!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. sabby says – reply to this

    512

he was left out because he passed away AFTER Jan 31/08…the tribute was only for those who passed away between Feb 2007 and Jan 31/08.
Same thing for the actor that passed away from JAWS, he was also not included beacuse it was after Jan 31/08.

  13. t.b. says – reply to this

    513

If everyone remembers, everyone was all upset last year because Anna Nicole was left out.

  14. Kelly says – reply to this

    514

As far as I know, everyone that died between February 1st and January 31st of 2007. Brad died February along with Heath, weren't they? So I guess they will be recognized on next years Oscar's.

  15. Mississippi Girl says – reply to this

    515

I noticed that too! big mistake!

  16. lee says – reply to this

    516

IF THEY ACKNOWLEDGED HEATH LEDGER, THEY SHOULD HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED BRAD RENFRO - Brad died before Heath-but I believe they released the cause of death for Brad after they released Heath's - and as far as cause of death being a reason (for not acknowledging), Heath and Brad died same death accidental overdose - the only difference is Renfro's abuse was well known and he had arrests -

  17. Meegan says – reply to this

    517

I think thats complete bullshit, he deserved to be on there too even if he was on drugs so was heath ledger and he was on there. They should be ashamed and embarrased.

  18. Meegan says – reply to this

    518

    Re: kris

he died before heath ledger!!!!! hello!!!!!!!!!

  19. audrey says – reply to this

    519

heath ledger died of an overdose too though! i think they were both accidental, and from different drugs (sleeping pills vs. heroin) but still! perhaps its the fame factor, but that isn't fair either.

    522

Brad dies before Heath. He should have been inlcuded. Forgetting him or leavinghim out has nothing to do with drug abuse…look at Chirs Farley and Jim Belushi…they werent forgotten…..
They were ackowledging stunt men and camera guys and they couldnt even say Brad Renfro? I am so ashamed.

  23. me says – reply to this

    523

He died a week BEFORE Heath and was very talented….. He was in the Client as well as Sleepers (as a young Brad Pitt) when he was a bit younger and I believe he just finished filming something. That is such a shame………

    526

It's what I said last night, If you don't know who Brad is you need to keep up with your movie history. He was a great actor but it seems if you didnt make a big hit right before you die no one cares about you. its sad.

  27. Stacy says – reply to this

    527

I think the tribute was to people who passed away from 2/1/07 to 1/31/08, didn't he pass in February of this year? Maybe that is why?

  28. Lady J says – reply to this

    528

He passed away a week before Heath Ledger, but was quickly put in the shadows onces Ledger passed away. I hope they find a way to rectify this.

And in response to Johanna's comment about making Ledger's memorial longer "since everybody knew him", well at one point everybody knew the actors/actresses that passed away!!

  29. Ann says – reply to this

    529

He wasn't part of Academy Awards History.

    That's why.

If he never was nominated or won an oscar, they wouldn't include him. All of the people that were included had some direct association with the oscars

  35. maeli says – reply to this

    535

to all of you who said that no one remembers him: did you remember half of the people in this tribute?

  36. rich says – reply to this

Because he died in 2008. The Oscars were the "2007 Oscars!"

  37. kelly says – reply to this

    537

i was thinking the same thing i recorded it and had to rewind it twice because i thought i missed it. for those of you who say who dont know who he was well then thats your loss. he was a really good actor. R>I>P BRAD RENFRO U WILL BE MISSED

  38. fiona says – reply to this

    538

He WAS supposed to be included. The cut off was jan. 31st and he died on the 16th. Heath was included and he died 6 days later on the 26th.

  39. TK says – reply to this

    539

    Re: May

Rob Schneider died in February 2008, therefore he'll be recognized next year, as for Brad Renfro, he was never nominated for anything, I believe thats why he wasn't included. However, they did give Heath the shortest spot during the tribute :(

  40. Stephanie says – reply to this

    540

They probably left him out because the Oscars honor film and he was a television actor, like 15 years ago. He will probably be honored at the Emmy's this year. But to be totally honest, we wasn't even that famous. He was on a TV show years ago and to be honest no one really remembers him. Of course, it's shame that he died, but I'm pretty sure it's because he was a television star. He did die before the cut of day (Jan. 15). I highly doubt they left him out because of drugs because they honored Heath Ledger and he died because of drugs. So, there you go.

    Members Memoriam

The members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are the organization's greatest asset, an assemblage of the finest artists and craftspersons of the art form.

The Academy Award itself, perhaps the best-known symbol of excellence in the world, holds that stature because it is voted by those who know best the role of each participant in the "collaborative art."

On this page the Academy lists those members who have died since February 1, 2007, and notes any Academy Awards or nominations (Win indicated by an asterisk (*). Service on the Academy's Board of Governors is also indicated.

    555

Its scary the way some of you people are reacting to this, BIG DEAL!! Get a life and find something better to do with your time besides OBSESSING over a D LIST actor who didn't care about himself half as much as some of you people do. So they didn't flash his picture across the screen for a split second. He's dead, MOVE ON!!!!! Y'all arguing over some stupid shit.

  56. Amber says – reply to this

    556

I know right, they're all obsessing over him and half of them don't even know when he died lmao February????? I'm not even a fan and even I know he died in January

  57. claire says – reply to this

    557

Thank you for making this point….this is a guy, love him or hate him contributed work on 26 films in 13 years and all while being a heroin addict and under 25 years old. Also, why is it that every year the actors only applaud their favorites in the death reel? Can't the grasp the concept of applauding all at the end, or all thru out. UGH. Hollywood.

  58. Lisette says – reply to this

    558

HE WAS NOT A MEMBER OF THE ACADEMY, PLAIN AN SIMPLE.

    what a shame,,
heath ledger was in that "in memoriam" list and he died of a drug overdose too..
prescription drugs that he abussed.so it is the same..it was not an accident..
all no mather how they died , all actors etc.. should be included..if they were part of hollywood…

yerrr he died of an accidential overdose of heroin and morphine…shame

  69. jdoe says – reply to this

    569

it takes about 2 seconds to confirm that he died a week BEFORE ledger
but more importantly, ledger was immensely talented and widely respected. this junkie was NOT in the same league by any stretch. a few days before he overdosed he got himself a tattoo that said "fuck all y'all" quite a class act, huh?

  70. Sarah says – reply to this

    570

Yes, it is perhaps tragic, but the Academy Awards, in their 'In Memoriam' section, only honours those people who were past nominees/winners, or members of the Academy. Does everybody remember a little film called 'Brokeback Mountain'? What about 'Monsters Ball'?. THAT is why Heath was honoured by the academy.

    574

I'm not sure about this…but I'm thinking that he wasn't a part of the tribute because he hasn't won an Oscar. (to my knowledge)…I think that the tribute was for those who have won Oscar's and have passed.

    That's was my understanding.

  75. jimmy says – reply to this

    575

they left him out because he was never nominated for an Oscar. The slideshow was for nominees/winners from the past who passed away this year. I am sure if Brad Renfro had ever been nominated his mug wouldda been up there, so sit down.

  76. me says – reply to this

    576

It was probably for those actors who were nominated or who won an oscar, or who were prominent in the film industry.

  78. invalidreality says – reply to this

maybe he was left out because he hasn't done any work in how long?
still, that's just not cool, he was an amazing actor (in the films he was in long ago) and he could have been even more amazing had he not had a problem with hard drugs

  79. Freudd says – reply to this

    580

I cant believe they didnt even give a 5 mintue tribute to Heath….he was one of them…a fellow nominee and I think they should have atleast given him some kind of tribute in a 3 1/2 hour ceremony. His untimely death affected so many people and that is the least they could have done.

  90. Amanda says – reply to this

    590

Ok people. The memoriam said at the beginning Feb 1 2007 through Jan 31 2008. Both Brad and Heath died in January. Brad was NOT a member of the academy. That is why he was not in there.

  91. whatever says – reply to this

    591

Actually everyone, he would have been included because he died January 15, 2008. Before the montage rolled, it said January 31, 2007-February 1, 2008

But he wasn't nominated for an oscar or part of an oscar winning movie or anything like that

  92. Missy Marie says – reply to this

Who cares? He'll be in next years tribute most likely. He never did much anyway.

  93. Li says – reply to this

Only individuals that were nominated or awarded an Academy award were included in the memoriam. That is why Renfro was not there.

  94. Cc says – reply to this

  98. Joanne says – reply to this

    598

The memorial said up until Jan 31st and Brad DIED BEFORE HEATH DID so he DID make the cut off date in his death. You dont have to be nominated..you just need to be in the business..it was rude.

  99. jsut askin says – reply to this

    599

I didn't notice Roy Schrieder from Jaws in there in there either but I could have just missed it?! They did only have a week to get the show together after the writewrsstrike ended but that is tacky

  100. sTAR says – reply to this

    600

Probably had to do with the cutoff date and they wanted Ledger to be the last because he was a more notable actor.
