Such A Lame Excuse

renfrobrad__opt.jpg

A spokesperson for the Academy Awards is speaking out about why Brad Renfro was omitted from the Oscar's "In Memoriam" tribute.

“It was really an editing decision because we can’t fit everyone in,” says a rep for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “There was no specific reason.”

Is that a good enough excuse?????

By total coincedence I watched 'Bully' last night. It was the most incredible, although heavy-going and disturbingly accurate portrayl of adolescence I've seen in ages. Brad's performance was incredible. This is definitely a travesty. Thanks for posting Perez.

THEY SHOWED BRAD AT THE SAG AWARDS, WHICH OF COURSE REGOGNIZE ACTORS FOR THE TALENT AND SKILL THEY BRING TO THE SCREEN & NOT WHAT HAPPENS IN THIER PERSONAL LIFE. BTW THEY DID SHOW AT LEAST 1 OTHER PERSON WHO DIED FROM USING TOO MUCH DRUGS, LEGAL OR OTHERWISE. GOVERNMENT DRUGS VS STREET DRUGS , THEY R BOTH DEAD

Not when you include all those lighting, make-up, etc. people in there.

They can fit in people that most of us have never heard of before, makeup artists to the stars, yet they can't seem to fit in a very talented actor? Explain this please, academy!

Yes, it's a good enough excuse. 1. I've never seen anything this boy was in. 2. They don't have an obligation to include every dead industry person. They probably missed 300 others. Who gives a shit?

  19. Shame on You! says – reply to this

    219

I have only ever vaguely heard of Brad and not even seen anything with him in - but understand from the things I've read that he was a young talented guy who sadly lost his way. How many times have we seen this in the entertainment business? To snub him in this way for the sake of a couple of seconds is not only lame - it's hypocritical. The Academy should be ashamed of themselves.

  20. Bleau says – reply to this

    220

ABSOFREAKINLUTELY NOT AN REASON, EXCUSE OR ISSUE. I mean come on, Mr. Renfro is D-E -A-D. He can't come back another time when "editing" isn't an issue. It was his one shot to be recognized by the Academy. That could have least given him that. This whole situation really leaves a bad taste. And for those of you that posted on here "Who Cares?" Well, I do. Who am I? I'm not a celebrity, not a politician, not someone you'd read about in the papers or see on the TV, but I am an entertainment fan. I've been watching the Oscars since high school on a regular basis. It's all very exciting and I love the whole awards season but when something like this happens, it just makes me think that Hollywood is self-centered, self-serving and money whores. The Academy, an historical part of Hollywood, needs to do better. This year it's Brad Renfro. Next time it'll be a C-list star, then B-list, then it'll just be about awards and no memoriam for those that help Hollywood and the Academy to thrive. It just SUCKS!!!!!

  21. Catherine says – reply to this

    221

that sounds very lame to me. Yeah , i think that Brad was not an A-List actor in Hollywood BUT i know that he deserved to at least be mentioned next to heath ledger. Calista Flockhard was there and she remembers having intimiate scenes with Brad in "telling lis in America" film.

  22. Sherry says – reply to this

    222

That was the first thing I thought when the tribute was over. Very sad.

  23. Anna says – reply to this

    223

F*** that! Brad was a great actor and no one really talked about his death cuz of Heath's (who they waited till the very end to show, of course!) They had the time……the show ended early if you didn't notice. Worst excuse ever!!!

  24. Laura says – reply to this

    224

I was shocked that they didn't show him. I mean, he is more well known that some of the "executives" that they showed. I thought "Did I blink and miss Brad Renfro's pic?" What jerks!

  25. AppleJuice says – reply to this

    225

I wonder why they had time to put Aaliyah in the year after she died even though she clearly was barely beginning to act with two less than critically acclaimed movies under her belt (Romeo Must Die, Queen of the Damned).

Perhaps Renfro was not in the limelight or a big enough name, but neither are 95 percent of the people on their memoriam montage. He was a gifted actor, and should have been recognized for it

  26. dany says – reply to this

    226

they can´t accept they made a mistake, idiots

  27. Julian says – reply to this

    227

An editing decision?? And yet did anyone else notice how many "executives" and "agents" were included?? Since when do they include suits???

  28. Beth says – reply to this

    228

OK, so they could show agents and executives that died, but not actors? Not only that, but they showed each person for 3 seconds, would 3 seconds more really have hurt. That is inexcuseable.

  29. Adrienne says – reply to this

    229

I think that fact that people are commenting on Perez so cruelly on someone's life lost regardless of whether it was an overdose or not is where the LAME-ness lies…be a little compassionate and think before you spew out your wasted hate for someone you didn't even know…put your energy somewhere constructive!

  30. Sarah says – reply to this

    230

    very lame excuse.

  31. lauren says – reply to this

    231

the person who said he had to be in an oscar nom film or nominated himself is a moron. they honor people who contributed to the film business. i'm sorry but if they can honor a bunch of behind the scenes 80 year old we have never heard of, they could have honored him. for those who don't know what he was in, rent "the client" or "sleepers." also, for the person who said he died before the deadline, he died before heath and heath was in the tribute. so yeah, basically the academy is a bunch of fuckers.

Such a p***poor excuse, granted he died of an overdose but hey they still let Charlie Sheen and Robert Downey Jr act and god knows we have all seen their drug problems in the news, many of times. Due to time issues is just a lame excuse for "we judge people on everything they do."

  37. kelly says – reply to this

    237

it will be because hollywood is filled with self important wankers and because brad renfro was not one of these self important wankers, they didn't have the time of day for him. maybe if he had adopted lots of black kids or made his own sex tape, they would have thought he was "one of them". i don't think brad would be too upset at being left out of the hollywood clique somehow.

they had hollywood agents who no one really gives a shit about…..actually having to put AGENT next to that persons name but they couldnt fit in one more ACTUAL actor…..

they didnt put him in cuz it was a heroine overdose….

  42. Speedball Sally says – reply to this

Dead heroin addicts - i.e. Brad Renfro - not even a twenty-second mention

Still alive (barely) suicidal heroin addicts - i.e. Owen Wilson - make him a presenter!

The difference is their money-making ability …

  44. Heather says – reply to this

  45. l says – reply to this

    245

It was odd that they made the comment about "some" being taken young, and then the only young person shown was Heath. And the "he was never nominated" excuse doesn't fly b/c there were agents listed. And the "he was a junkie" excuse doesn't fly b/c there were a lot of drug users listed. I know they can't list everyone who ever had a bit part in a movie, but c'mon.

And yet they have room for Jack Valenti, the father of the MPAA Ratings System:
PEOPLE, please see "This Film is Not Yet Rated" its a documentary by Kirby Dick about the MPAA - I am a grad student and had to watch this for a censorship class. HIGHLY recommneded and will tell you all about Valenti- who should infuriate us all.

  51. Kelsey says – reply to this

    251

    1. Bullshit excuse
    2. For all these morons posting - "They didn't acknowledge him because nobody knew him.." PLEASE - like we really knew who the 'cinemaphotographer assisant' to blah blah in 1940's film, etc….. 80% of the people shown weren't actors, they were sudio execs, or producers or editors, or sound boys from WAY back….!
    3. If you want to be technical, they didn't include Anna Nicole either - and YES, she did have a few little roles - ie: Naked Gun -a pretty big movie series. No, she wasn't a serious actress, but still…they usually include ALL movie actors, Directors, etc… (as they should…I wasn't a big fan of hers, but there were PLENTY of Anna fans)

  52. hmm says – reply to this

I honestly can't believe you get this kind of fame for being a pathetic gossip mongrel your far worse then any of these idiots you cover because without them you would be less then nothing, just another ugly fat kid trying to get laid. Your taste in music is HORRIBLE your taste in fashion is FAR worse then horrible and your over all physical shape is horrendous. You should just close down this site, buy yourself a gym membership and retreat to a place where no one will ever see or hear from you again, at least that way you would finally make a positive influence on society.

    258

Sweet! The comments section has been co-opted by Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No to Drugs" brigade. Who would have guessed that so many people here are straight edge….
Regardless, it could easily be argued that Renfro's body of work and range was far more impressive than Ledger's. Perhaps the key to immortality in Hollywood is to play a gay cowboy and act in a slew of other completely forgettable movies. (The new Batman might be an exception.)

  59. jaysus says – reply to this

F**king lame excuse!!!!!! He deserved to be in that tribute!!!!!! The academy sucks balls!!!!!!!!

  62. Vicki in Canada says – reply to this

    262

The point really isn't if he was extremely famous…I always thought that when they ran those clips it was simply to honour those in the business that had passed away during that year. The fact they left him out is just plain sloppy - whoever put that particular clip together should be demoted or just plain booted. And I believe I read below they also didn't include Roy Scheider??? Just plain sloppy - as for as "time" constraints - that's just bullshit - they have all the time in the world to show us the orchestra pit….the obilgatory audience shots and the (mostly) overlong acceptance speeches, etc…..I guess they may learn after all - was this the "most shitty" of broadcasts? As told by Perez himself? Lowest audience numbers in years?????? GET A CLUE YOU OSCAR FOLKS - JUST GET A CLUE…..

  63. B says – reply to this

    263

To all the assholes on here leaving shitting comments…Brad has consistently been acting in films. He just finished up The Informers which is set to be released later this year. Now shut the fuck up about him not having acted in years! You guys suck along with the oscars!

  64. Melissa says – reply to this

    264

It is a HORRIBLE excuse. For all the people saying it was a tribute to people who have won an award……since when did an AGENT win an award??????? I have NEVER heard of an agent winning an acadamy award….this is complete bullshit….They probably excluded him because of they way he died…but HELLO!?!?!? Heath died the same way, A DRUG OVERDOSE!!!!!! So what if it was prescribed….illegal or not they whould not exclude someone like that. I saw the tribute and MOST of the people on the list i havent even heard of. Its completely ridiculous!!!

    298

Maybe because he didn't die until January 2008, and this show only covers 2007?!!! Not to mention the fact that you can't make those films overnight. They probably started them in December, and it was most likely in the can before Renfro thankfully offed his no-talent self with drugs last month.

  99. MO says – reply to this

    299

Brad Renfro was way before his time. He was an excellent actor and deserved more than a 2 second clip, I think that's why his life went the way it did. Anyone who thinks he was washed up should think twice, Hollywood is washed up.

  100. Esther says – reply to this

It's a terrible excuse. He is going to be dearly missed. The least they could have done is put his face up on the screen for 5 damn seconds.
