A spokesperson for the Academy Awards is speaking out about why Brad Renfro was omitted from the Oscar's "In Memoriam" tribute.
“It was really an editing decision because we can’t fit everyone in,” says a rep for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “There was no specific reason.”
Is that a good enough excuse?????

If they can't include everybody they shouldn't include anybody. I think it's a demeaning segment anyway, what with the way the audience claps for some and not for others. Clearly Renfro's OD was too "controversial" for the Academy…however Heath Ledger's ok because he used prescription pills.

Oh get over it, he only made One movie when he was young. I didn't even know who this was when he died. The movie was good. Now if he won an oscar that's different. It sucks that he died early.

Brad's friends and family (myself included) would have liked to see him up there, and it is with complete and utter disgrace that he was not mentioned. Brad was interested in taking roles that weren't of a blockbuster nature, as he skipped past American Pie and many others over the years. He did what he chose to do, because he wasn't going to let Hollywood own him. For those of you who are uneducated about his career and do not care to research the extent of his work, but yet sit here online and speak ill of him just because it's the "hot topic", well, I'm sorry for you. This means nothing to you in the long run, but his loved ones endure every jab you take and they do it with a heavy heart. I will love and defend him forever. I don't need to see his face on the Oscar tribute to know that he counted in this life.

Well, they didn't exactly mention Heath Ledger or any other notable celebrity death either. Why should this be a special case… he was a child star gone wrong. No need to mention it at a reputable ceremony… that's what THS is for.

R U for real? I think that it is horrible that he was left out and that is a totally lame excuse! Drug OD's are all the same, a very big fucking mistake, no one can place judgement on who had it worse. They should have at least included him for his contribution however large or small they may be. I'm sure that there were some other individuals who were a lot less revelent that could have been excluded for " time restrictions"!
What about the lady that directed this years cute movie "Waitress?" She was murdered before the movie came out and I think she should have been mentioned at least.

How bout Anna Nicole Smith last year….when people complained that she was omitted, the Academy said that her death occured after the montage was completed and she would be included in the next year's montage (2008)….she was definitely NOT included….let's be honest, if some hollywood big shot (e.g. Tom Cruise, Steven Speilberg) died two days before the oscars, they would absolutely be included!!!!

I thought it was a little disrespectful for omitting Brad Renfro, his career started off very strong starring in The Client with Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones. Even though he did not do as much notable work in his later years he still deserved to be a part of the show.

I also noticed for a flash sec-because it was that quick-that one of the kids of Jurassic Park died-I think it was the boy and not the girl. Does anybody know how he died, at what age??? This was totally overlooked by all media.

the only reason i watched the oscars was because i was waiting the moment that brad renfro would appear in the tribute, but nothing happened and that what just dissapointing, it just made last night's oscars more boring!!, the most boring oscars ceremony i've ever seen, and i say this cause i was abrad fan for so many years, and no matter how he died, he contributed and and he was a great actor, better than many that are alive out there now

Brad Renfro should have been on the tribute. There was a mistake made and I can only hope somewhere someone is going to be blamed because of it. I think regardless of personal life issues (drug abuse, etc) if a person makes a memrable film such as the cure, then the academy had a duty to allow people to remember him during there biggest show

I think they could have omitted one of those cinematographers or art directors that we have no idea who they are. Despite all his faults, Brad Renfro was an acclaimed actor who fell on hard times, as do most actors.

Why don't you go rent the Cure, the client, Sleepers, Apt. Pupil, Bully, Ghost World ( this movie was nominated for an oscar by the way), Deuces Wild, the jacket or 10th and wolf just to name a few of the movies with great performances by Brad. He should have been included in the tribute.

He was certainly good enough to be listed and should have been. In a sense, he lost his life due to the Hollywood influence. It was truly ashamed he was not included. He was a person and his life is a loss.
No offense to his memory but he hadn't really done anything in a long time; if they included every former child star who passed away it would be a pretty long list. Somehow I doubt his family and close friends are upset about this so why should anyone else be?

I'M SO GLAD I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE THAT NOTICED THAT. The Academy goofed on too many little things like this poor boy's death and lack of acknowledgment for Whoopi. Gil Cates is losing his touch. Nothing, especially the death of a movie actor, should be overlooked at the awards nor justified with such a stupid reason for the omission.

Veteran comedic television and film actor Tom Poston was also omitted from the Oscar's "In Memoriam" tribute. Thats more shocking than Brad Renfro not making the cut.
I think it's a shame, he worked opposite the likes of Robert Deniro, Kevin Bacon, Susan Sarandon and Sir Ian McKellen. He was a GOOD actor. They can honour makeup artists that last worked 40 years ago but not a talented young actor that ENTERTAINED us. Isn't that what the industry is all about? Fuck them, the show sucked anyway. That is really terrible! Brad's death was completely overshadowed by the also tragic death of Heath Ledger. So many reasons why this is just plain sad.
It is truly depressing to see other people commenting that Brad was undeserving of a 2 second recognition because of how he died and what his life had become at that point. Regardless, he was someone's son, someone's friend, and his unfortunate and untimely death can surely be at least partially attributed to our society and the way we only cheer for our teams when they're winning and turn our heads when they're down.
