Shake, Rattle and Roll

An earthquake hit the U.K., including London and as far as Wales, on Tuesday evening.

With a magnitude of 5.3, it was pretty darn big.

It is thought to be the UK's largest earthquake in the last 25 years.

Hope everyone's okay!

For the people saying it's not a big deal, 5 on the richter scale is considered by experts to be high enough to cause damage to buildings, something we aren't prepared for in this part of the world.
We don't expect something like this to happen more than once a decade, tops, so it is newsworthy. The thing happened just hours ago, if you're concerned about it getting undue news coverage, don't be, for God's sake. Anyway, if CNN find it necessary to cover developments in Paris and Britney's lives, they can sodding well give this a mention!

The earthquake had a magnitude of 4.7 and is considered "light" according to CNN, check your facts

    103

5.3 is regarded as large in england.

i don't care what it is regarded as in the US. it happened in the UK.

we hardly ever have them, and as Alice said, we are simply not prepared or used to earthquakes that can damage buildings.

why are people being ignorant??? CNN are wrong. it was a 5.3

    104

Yep, felt it. Woke me up just before 1 am. Felt like a little rumble and a bit of noise. Not very many injuries though - just minor ones from crumbling chimneys. How weird though - I am from Chicago and never thought I would experience an earthquake over in the UK!

(I live in the UK) It woke me up at 1am, everything on my dressing table was rattling. Had watched Most Haunted that evening so thought it was something to do with ghosts, not an earthquake. Relieved to find out the real cause when I watched the news this morning!

Apparently there are very few injuries. Some poor kid had a chimney fall on him though.

  14. Disturbed says – reply to this

    114

Alice I completley understand you are not used to earthquakes there and understand why it made the news. Those familiar with earthquakes know that the magnitude is often (almost always) changed a few hours after the event ad data is analyzed.
It currently has been downgraded and classified a 4.7 after geologist review. It is also very common for news media to continue to report the higher (original) number. Sadly, it profits the media. You can check out the USGS earthquake site and see for youself. I tried posting all this earlier but the comment never appeared and I'm wondering if it's because I posted the link. I shall try again, hope it doesn't double post.
    http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2008nyae.php

However, Japan had an earthquake just minutes ago that was 6.4. You can see that at the same site. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2008nya6.php

OMG I FELT IT!!! it was soo wierd, i've never felt an earthquake before. I live in Buckinghamshire, not linconshire, so it was 5.2 where I was, but i was just going to bed and i heard my computer start creaking. I was really freaked out as I thought someone was standing there, but then everything else started skaking too! I thought part of my house had fallen in, I only realised after, what it was!

    lol Perez at reporting this!

    Re: Disturbed

4.7 was the original number from the US Geographical Survey. But then the British Geographical Surver upgraded it to a 5.3. It was a 5.3 quake. Official. American news media are wrong because they are reporting the US Geographical Survey data which was released about 30 minutes after the quake. The British data came roughly an hour later.

    127

I woke up at 1am and my whole flat was shaking and a loud rumbling. This is England…we don't get shit like that here. I was petrified. It's not huge on a world scale but it was pretty darn big for the UK. It's been graded as 5.3 by the British meterological society. It was mainly Northern England that was affected. My brother is in London and he only felt a slight termor whereas in Manchester where I am it was really scary. My whole building shook….i've had no sleep all night. I am worried about aftershocks.

hi perez , the earthquake happened only a few miles from me , bulidings are damaged cos alot of them are really old and a main road through town is closed but nobody got hurt here. A guy a few miles away had to go to hospital because his roof collapsed on him.

Theyre saying on the BBC that it was felt in holland !

I'm from California and I am staying over here for a couple of weeks. I never thought i'd ever experience a quake in the UK. Have to say that I am used to earthquakes and I put it at 5.0 at least from my experience. I would say 5.3 sounds about right. Man, these quakes seem to be following me.

Re: hjksh – Also, another thing hjksh - the US geological offices that have it classified as a 4.7 use senors in the Earth all over the world. That does not mean that someone sitting in a geology office in the US decided it was a 4.7, that means the data from sensors in Europe have determined it to be a 4.7, but your media, as well as media around the world will continue reporting it as a 5.3. This is how it works. This is normal. You are not familiar with it. I'm sorry, but it is true.

I live in North London and was up when it happened. It was about 1 am here and it lasted for about 5-10 seconds. Being quite a bit away from the epicentre, we only felt a rumble in comparison to what others closer felt. It was probably a 4.7 as measured plus it was comparable to the previous one in 2002. My husband was in bed and he woke up from the shaking.
At first I thought I was getting the shakes! Then things on my shelf started to shake fromt the vibrations. It felt as if we were living right next to train tracks and a fast train passed by.
