Let's do some 'math' for the film Juno.
Canadian director + Canadian lead actors + movie shot in Canada = Canadian movie (right?)
Not so, according to the folks at the Genies, the Canadian equiv of the Oscars!
To be considered Canadian, a film has to be financed with Canadian money.
Juno's financing came from an LA based company.
Juno director, Jason Reitman, spoke out about the snub at a pre-Oscars bash at the Canadian Consulate in LA, "…how are we not eligible for a Genie when David Cronenberg's film (which was partially financed by a Canadian company) about Russians living in London shot in England with a British crew and British cast is eligible? I'm sorry, but somebody is going to have to explain that to me; I don't get it."
We don't get it either!
Update: A publicist for the Genie awards just sent us the following statement.
"Thanks so much for your coverage of the Genie Awards but I would like to clear up the confusion surrounding the movie Juno. The movie wasn’t snubbed by the Genies because it was never submitted to the Genie Awards. I have provided below a quote from our CEO, Sara Morton that will hopefully clarify the situation.
Juno is an excellent film and the Academy salutes its success, which reflects the work of many talented Canadians both in front of and behind the camera. Regrettably, the filmmakers decided not to enter the film into the Genie Awards.
In order to be eligible for the Genies, a film must be Canadian, as defined by CAVCO and the CRTC. These are the accepted industry standards for recognizing a film as Canadian.
Ultimately, it's up to the filmmaker to decide whether to seek Canadian certification. It would not be appropriate for me to speculate about the reasons for a filmmaker's decision, or why they may or may not qualify."

So according to the update it was Juno that snubbed the Genies. Just as well it lost the Best Picture Oscar even if it was a slow year for movies. This was just a mix of Dawson's Creek and Simple Life which equalled unbelieveable teens that are obnoxious and contrived. This was possibly the only movie I've ever not been able to sit through.

no, it should not have been nominated for a genie. the criteria of being funded by canadian money is perfectly reasonable & sensible. otherwise half the movies made in "hollywood" would be eligible because canadian actors, directors, writers, and technicians are employed in huge numbers in loads of american and international productions.

This is not a canadian film. CAVCO AND CRTC both decide on canadian films on a point based system. YES it was film in BC and YES the director and actors and crew were mostly canadian, but that's pretty much it. Your funding has to be Canadian, where you shoot in Canada must be said as that location in the film. There's a whole list of things you have to have for it to be a full Canadian. Also, as she said, it wasn't submitted, so it's their own stupid fault. Get it right.

JUNO is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I have no idea why it's getting so many good reviews. it sucks balls. seriously. i'm so mad I spent my own money to go see it in theaters!!
Who the fuck should care. The movie made a lot of money and most people like it. It will sell well on DVD and get lots of cable play. That is all that matters.

Perez, you dummy, the Genie awards arent for Canadian movies, its the JUNO awards. If you watched the pre-oscar show you would have seen the Juno director saying that he wants to win a Juno for his movie. But really no self-respecting Canuck watches either the Genies or the Junos. Because they suck.
If Juno is considered Canadian, then so should Superbad and maybe Knocked Up(which was a rip off a book by a Canadian author with the same title ). Superbad was shot in Canada; it was written by two Canadians (Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg), it starred Michael Cera (from Juno) and Seth Rogen, had Canadians extras in the background, so why wasn't it considered Canadian? Because it was financed by a major Hollywood studio and takes place in the US, the same as Juno.

the genies are in place by the CRTC to support canadian-funded movies. Juno is a hollywood movie that happens to have cast canadian actors (there are a shit load of them) and was shot up north. if it was done any other way than every single mike myers, kiefer sutherland, jim carrey, etc etc movie would get nominations. please people, its a small canadian awards show aimed to promote the canadian movie industry. get off it. canada is wonderful.
okay im a canadian and i thought Juno was a great movie, and it and its a actors are going to win lots of awards, just not as a canadian film. As for the movie being filmed in canada it does not make it a canadian film alot of american televison shows and movies are filmed here because it is cheap but we dont call them canadian ( and this isn't just a few it is a large percentage ). And just because a actor is canadian dosn't make the film canadian even though that actor or actoress is amazingly talented. They will still be eligible for awards in the film just not for it being canadian. Now about funding you juno fans should be happy the movie wasn't canadian. If juno was a canadian film it would not be what it is! it would be a low budget film, filled with horrible acting, shoty cameraing( much resembaling a porno) and a sad excuse for a script( but not in this case because the script was writen by Diablo Cody)! besides its not like any one is going to tune in to the Genies any ways american or canadian!! Juno was a good move it is canadian thats the end of it. for example canadians make a movie in here and there is some american actors in it then they go home and it wasnt a half bad movie can we then say that is an american movie because one of its locations happened to be here . i not go to say you should fell the same but i dont really thinks so but then again it dosent really matter that much. and if any one reads the comments there are a bunch of canadians that said that it sucked that it wasnt consitered and that no one really cares abount the genies any ways! take a breather and think thing through before you write it down or make your dictions on.
