Today's humanitarian crisis in Iraq — and the potential consequences for our national security — are great. Can the United States afford to gamble that 4 million or more poor and displaced people, in the heart of Middle East, won't explode in violent desperation, sending the whole region into further disorder?

What we cannot afford, in my view, is to squander the progress that has been made. In fact, we should step up our financial and material assistance. UNHCR has appealed for $261 million this year to provide for refugees and internally displaced persons. That is not a small amount of money — but it is less than the U.S. spends each day to fight the war in Iraq. I would like to call on each of the presidential candidates and congressional leaders to announce a comprehensive refugee plan with a specific timeline and budget as part of their Iraq strategy.

As for the question of whether the surge is working, I can only state what I witnessed: U.N. staff and those of non-governmental organizations seem to feel they have the right set of circumstances to attempt to scale up their programs. And when I asked the troops if they wanted to go home as soon as possible, they said that they miss home but feel invested in Iraq. They have lost many friends and want to be a part of the humanitarian progress they now feel is possible.

I appreciate all her efforts into bringing awareness and attention to the millions of refugees, most kids under 12 who are living in squalor, surviving day-by-day. What would become of them as adults? They have no means of education, jobs, or a future. We, as human beings, have an obligation to help one another out. Here in the U.S., we enjoy so many freedoms we take for granted…especially the freedom to be educated. And to think, there are so many high-school drop outs. The problem lies in lack of education. I agree with what Angie is doing, and am glad she's not one of those actors just sitting idly by, partying her life away. More actors need to look to her as an example of using stardom to highlight issues for us ego-centric Americans.

I can understand that as UNHCR rep, Jolie wants to plead for the funds, not that UNHCR gets its funds from individual donors but never mind.
I can understand that in that UNHCR role, she can’t express an opinion on the occupation.
What I can’t understand is why she would allow her article to appear under the headline “A Reason to Stay in Iraq”.
That sounds to everybody like a clear call for continued occupation. And that would be WAY out of line for a UNHCR rep. So either she agreed to that headline, in which case she’d better quit working for the UN, or somebody at the Washington Post owes her a major apology - preferably in print.

For those of you who pretend to care about her putting herself in danger in Iraq, she was in the most protected part of Iraq, surrounded by security, and meeting with diplomats. They do not put themselves in harms way, and the UN will not send Angie as a representative if they did not know 1000% that she would be fine. So stop pretending that you actually care about how she would "put herself and unborn child in danger" in one post, and hope she dies in the next. Sick and pathetic!

Iraq would be on the brink or in a civil war currently if the United States or some type of mediator did not occupy it. The Shi'ites, Sunnis, and Arabs hate each other and do not trust each other.

Goodness knows everyone is going to get gung-ho about it now because Jolie spoke about Iraq and encourages humanitarian efforts. I would love to see humanitarian efforts in Iraq but not at the expense of more human lives, especially Americans that Al-Queda waged a jihad against.
