Filed under: Gay Gay Gay > Tyra Banks > Mike Huckabee

Our favorite* Republican presidential hopeful, Mike Huckabee, was on Tyra's talk show talking about the gays and same sex marriage.

He's so damn funny! We just wanna get Ellen's dildo and smack him upside the head!

Re: Mattyboo – He didn't say argue with evolution. He said that he believes in adaptation…which is the same thing as evolution, but instead of it just happening…God caused it to happen. He didn't say you had to teach that God is the creator, but tell children in public schools that some people believe that a God created the world…you totally misconstrued the things that he said…There are very, very smart people that believe in creation, even SCIENTISTS…are they idiots? And he didn't call you in an idiot for believing in evolution…did he? And you think that people with different religios views than you shouldn't run for office? That seems a little…idiotic.

Perez-you just don't like this guy because he doesn't agree with you. That makes you just as bad as the "close-minded" people that have a problem with homosexuals. You'd be surprised how many people are "liberal" and "ok with gay people", but in reality are not–they just say that so that people like you won't get upset. As much as you may think that he's forcing his ideas on people, you are doing the same thing with your blog. It looks pretty stupid for you to make a comment about how "funny" and "stupid" he is, when if you watch the video, he doesn't say anything stupid. And if your argument is that it's stupid because he obviously trying to say the right thing/be politically correct-duh!-he's a politician! That's what they do-and your beloved HILARY does it 10 times worse than he does, saying all this sweet-sounding BULLSHIT about how much she loves Obama. I really hate when gay people call people who disagree with them funny or stupid, that's immature and condescending, and if you want people to take you serioiusly: 1-act like a grown-up who has an argument besides someone being "stupid", and 2-quit flaunting your sexuality. You don't see me with a hetero bumper sticker, like it's the only defining thing about me. You're gay, we get it-you should get over it.

    Re: ….
The Bible mentions that certain homosexual acts are an abomination, yes. There were social and cultural reasons for that, however, that were very tied to that period of time. Historians and Biblical scholars believe that, particularly in Leviticus and possibly in the other passages mentioning homosexual activity, that it centered around semen and the sacredness of semen. It was an abomination to let it go to waste in any way, and male-male sexual activity would be considered "wasting" it, as would male masturbation. It doesn't say, though, that homosexual orientation - the feelings of romantic love, affection, and attraction to one's own sex - is wrong or even bad. The reasons for specific sexual activities to be considered negative weren't necessarily religious reasons, and they had nothing to do with Christ. As far as Paul's letters, many scholars believe that many, if not most, of them were not actually written by Paul himself at all, and they also believe that many, if not most, of his letters were greatly influenced by Christianity mixed in with other long-standing religious traditions, not 100% Judaism and Christianity.
And the fact is, Jesus doesn't say being gay is wrong. There are a whole heck of a lot of contradictions not only between, but also within, the testaments, but that is one thing that's certain.

You've been told that "evolution is just a theory", a guess, a hunch, and not a fact, not proven. You've been misled. Keep reading, and in less than two minutes from now you'll know that you've been misinformed. We're not going to try and change your mind about evolution. We just want to point out that "it's just a theory" is not a valid argument.

The Theory of Evolution is a theory, but guess what? When scientists use the word theory, it has a different meaning to normal everyday use.1 That's right, it all comes down to the multiple meanings of the word theory. If you said to a scientist that you didn't believe in evolution because it was "just a theory", they'd probably be a bit puzzled.

In everyday use, theory means a guess or a hunch, something that maybe needs proof. In science, a theory is not a guess, not a hunch. It's a well-substantiated, well-supported, well-documented explanation for our observations.2 It ties together all the facts about something, providing an explanation that fits all the observations and can be used to make predictions. In science, theory is the ultimate goal, the explanation. It's as close to proven as anything in science can be.

    312

lets see dumb fuck — he said gays can not creative a good environment to raise children and that being gay is not God's way —- I doubt your Gay — maybe a dumb homosexual — but being gay means realizing when someone has put you down

  13. Apollo says – reply to this

    313

Some people think that in science, you have a theory, and once it's proven, it becomes a law. That's not how it works. In science, we collect facts, or observations, we use laws to describe them, and a theory to explain them. You don't promote a theory to a law by proving it. A theory never becomes a law.

This bears repeating. A theory never becomes a law. In fact, if there was a hierarchy of science, theories would be higher than laws. There is nothing higher, or better, than a theory. Laws describe things, theories explain them. An example will help you to understand this. There's a law of gravity, which is the description of gravity. It basically says that if you let go of something it'll fall. It doesn't say why. Then there's the theory of gravity, which is an attempt to explain why. Actually, Newton's Theory of Gravity did a pretty good job, but Einstein's Theory of Relativity does a better job of explaining it. These explanations are called theories, and will always be theories. They can't be changed into laws, because laws are different things. Laws describe, and theories explain.

  14. Apollo says – reply to this

    314

Just because it's called a theory of gravity, doesn't mean that it's just a guess. It's been tested. All our observations are supported by it, as well as its predictions that we've tested. Also, gravity is real! You can observe it for yourself. Just because it's real doesn't mean that the explanation is a law. The explanation, in scientific terms, is called a theory.

Evolution is the same. There's the fact of evolution. Evolution (genetic change over generations)3 happens, just like gravity does. Don't take my word for it.4 Ask your science teacher, or google it. But that's not the issue we are addressing here. The Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection is our best explanation for the fact of evolution. It has been tested and scrutinised for over 150 years, and is supported by all the relevant observations.

Next time someone tries to tell you that evolution is just a theory, as a way of dismissing it, as if it's just something someone guessed at, remember that they're using the non-scientific meaning of the word. If that person is a teacher, or minister, or some other figure of authority, they should know better. In fact, they probably do, and are trying to mislead you.5

Evolution is not just a theory, it's triumphantly a theory!

To anyone interested in the Christianity vs. Homosexuality debate I heartily recommend 'FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO.' It is the most concise yet multi-denominational essay I have found. Recently released for rental, it is also available from NetFlix. Thankfully it does not include Gov. Huckabee.

'FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO' (2007) In this Sundance documentary, director Daniel Karslake goes to the Bible to examine the ways in which conservative Christian groups have used — and sometimes exploited — holy Scripture to deny basic human rights to gays and lesbians around the world. Highlights include interviews with V. Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican Communion, and Chrissy Gephardt, the lesbian daughter of former U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt.

S/he wasn't saying that s/he even agrees with what s/he believes that the Bible says, just that s/he believes it says it. And I responded with the reasons I believe it does not. That's it. Neither ….. nor I have said anything negative about anybody, and if you'd read the points I reiterated to make it more crystal, you'd see pretty clearly that I don't have a single solitary thing against anyone of any sexual orientation. I don't believe it's (generally) a choice, nor do I believe it's wrong. Reading what you want to read into someone's comment when it isn't actually there is just going to make you angrier.

    Re: rjp3
"believe in Christ … not the trash written by men in the bible" is pretty much what I've been saying this entire time, particularly the first part. Not that I would call it trash, but a lot of the Bible, particularly sections of the Old Testament, *especially* Leviticus, don't apply today in the same way that they did at the time. There are a whole lot of rules written in there that were for health and social and cultural reasons, not necessarily because of religion and certainly not because of Jesus.
It's not that the rest of the Bible isn't important, and it's all really quite fascinating. But the gospels and Jesus' life and example are what I truly believe are what really matters most.

    Re: rjp3

C.S. Lewis has a fantastic quote that I just love:

""I'm on Aslan's side even if there isn't any Aslan to lead it. I'm going to live as like a Narnian as I can even if there isn't any Narnia.""

I think that even were I not Christian, even were I agnostic or atheist or entirely disinterested in all of it, I'd still think Jesus is a great example of how to live our lives. I have a number of Christian friends and acquaintances who basically feel, "focus on Jesus, forget religion," and I don't really blame them for it. Religion can be used as a terrible tool for hatred and power. That's not that say that it always is, or even that it usually is. But it can be. Jesus, on the other hand, is always love and always a wonderful example.

I'm a woman married to a man and I don't plan on having kids. Do I violate the terms of marriage as described by religions? The same sex marriage of which people are speaking is a legal request, not a religious one. Get married by a priest in a church without the legal papers and you are not married. Again too much mingling of church and state.

Re: MeghanC – Oh believe me, if you were an atheist, you wouldn't believe in Jesus either, you'd just stay away from all that stuff completely. I should know, I am one. I'm not denying he existed but I would never go so far as to call him an ideal or my role model. You don't have to be religious or believe in Jesus to be a good human being and know right from wrong. In fact, atheists tend to be the more tolerant people because they don't force their views upon others. I think it's time that the SEPERATION OF STATE AND CHURCH actually be taken seriously, meaning: leave religion out of politics and look at what the presidential candidates have to offer on a POLITICAL level. Because that's their business, POLITICS, not RELIGION. Then they'd be preachers. But even so, Huckabee would still be the wrong man for the job. It's time for someone who has already arrived in the 21st century!!!

He has a good point - not about homosexuality, but about being everyone's president. I have always said that Bush was NOT my president, because I think he stole the election the first time, and rode on a wave of complacence the second time. I could point out several current candidates that disagree with my lifestyle as a single mom, punk rocker, blonde, working woman, fat chick, red-state resident, etc. - whatever, but we need to move past the narrowest of self-labels and get someone in the Oval Office that will do what we, THE PEOPLE, want them to do. Huckabee may not be my candidate, but I've seen much more intelligence, tolerance (feigned or not), and ideas this round than in the past couple of elections. Vote for who you want, but just vote!

    329

I think it's very condescending to imply that only people who accept Jesus Christ as their savior are "in the know," so to speak. There are highly intelligent and moral people who simply believe in other religions, or even none at all. You don't have to "feel sorry" for them. They are fine. It usually depends on who gave birth to you, and what religion they were, doesn't it? Most people don't study all religions and then pick the one that feels right for them. So, don't act so high and mighty. You don't know everything about God, and you don't have an automatic "in" just because you're a Christian. It is this type of attitude that turns people off to Christians.

    Re: Michelle
Exactly! My wonderful friend - a woman who is romantically involved exclusively with another woman in a long-term, happy, healthy relationship - marrying her girlfriend would not harm anyone else's heterosexual marriage. If you don't like gay marriage, don't get one. And fine, not everyone is going to agree about any issue 100% of the time, if people don't like gay marriage, then okay, they don't have to. But that doesn't mean that they should prevent other people from getting one. It's not historically, or even Biblically (read through the Old Testament), accurate to say that marriage is limited exclusively to the "one man and one woman" concept. Huckabee doesn't have to like gay marriage, and neither do any of the people who are opposed to that. People are entitled to their views, and I'll respect that whether I agree with them or not. But it's another story completely to exclude other consenting adult human beings from getting married just because you don't agree with their orientation.

  39. Charlie says – reply to this

    339

What a complete idiot! So marriage is only for people who can reproduce - does that mean that infertile people cannot get married? Does that mean that once a woman has gone through the menopause she is forbidden from marrying? No, it does not!
If he believes the "institution of marriage" is between a man and woman who can reproduce, then why not offer something to same-sex couples which gives them the same legal rights as marriage, but is not called marriage.
This man is your stereotypical right wing American, and it's people like him who make people abroad think so badly about America.
Honestly, this man is a fool - if you vote him as President, he'll probably try and get Shirley Phelps-Roper to be his Vice President.

Yes, he says everyone is given their choice. Yet, the law supports his opinion, and not the opinions of those who feel that gay people should be able to marry. So of course if you are gay and wish to have the right to get married, you will have a problem with his opinion. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, but I think you are missing the point here. It is like saying that white people had their opinion about blacks being allowed in "white restrooms" or some other white only place. And then blacks having their opinion that they should be permitted to go where ever they choose. Yet the laws back then supported the white opinion. That is where the problem comes in. His view is the view which is law. How nice for him!

A homosexual can choose to be an outright homo, openly dating same-sex partners, or choose to be "in the closet," hiding their sexuality and possibly pretending to be straight. A homosexual could choose to be "whorish" or choose to have one, life-long partner. These choices are the same for heteros as well. There are choices involved in how you express your sexuality, that is what Huckabee was getting at.

Huckabee would make a better President than any of the garbage we have left. Ughhh. Can you believe someone like Hillary or Obama could actually be President?

Ask anyone why they like Obama and they'll say they want change. What kind of change he's talking about ….they have no idea. We are surrounded by morons. Anyone who backs Obama can't seriously have ever read our Constitution.

Re: spinky – Intelligent lady. From a conservative Christian mother of three. Ok, somewhat conservative…lol. Oh, and my husband's father is a pastor. But you seem like the kind of person I'd befriend in a heartbeat, cuz I like intelligent, common sense people, and that's what my family and I judge people on. I don't care who any of my friends are "relating" with, as long as they are safe and happy.
    So…Spinky rocks!

Why is he still in the race??? He wants to get rid of the IRS. Nice thought but lets stick with reality. I guess he thinks that the government will just magically make money to pay the military, run our schools, and defend our country.

He may be a nice man. I will not argue that. But his ideas do not work for the federal government.

Equality…i think that is the pretty much the first sentence of the Declaration of Independence.

hey thumbsucker — just because RJP3 believe it is a OK does not make it OK for other people — RJP3's belief about SIN is pointless and the issue is RJP3 does not understand that === go crawl into a hole because unless RJP3's desire is to oppress others with his/her self-serving belief then RJP3's teaching mean NOTHING to other people. BTW the same bible you are quoting says FOOLS DISPISE WISDOM (or letting other people have an opinion.

I am a proud atheist and morally I'm surely a better person than fucking Huckabee, and many other religious people (ever looked at statistics about religiousness in prisons???). I would never go on tv and lie to the public, claiming to respect people when in reality I don't. Lying is a sin? Well then too bad, in that case he is not a "good christian", because I don't believe a word he says. Elect him president, and you'll see how quickly he'll make gays' lives miserable.
Anyway, back to my original point: LEAVE NON-RELIGIOUS PEOPLE ALONE!!!

He is a good man and is entitled to his beliefs. I will not vote for him, but I respect him for being honest and following his own path. Marriage is a traditional arrangement meant to bind parents who are bearing children. It should not be reconfigured; same sex couples should have a civil process that affords them equal access to family benefits. I don't think it is different from straight couples that live as partners outside of marriage. Those people merely make legal arrangements to share assets and benefits, it they choose.

How can he say that we need to conserve the institution of marriage when there are people who only stay married for a couple of days and hours? What makes that type of idiotic nuptial seem more worthy over a love between two individuals that happens to be between two men or two women that lasts years and decades??
AND BTW, FUCKEDUPBEE, WHAT MAKES YOU SO GREAT TO BE THE ONE TO TEACH ABOUT GOD TO YOUR CHILDREN? All you do or did in explaining to them about God's true meaning of love is by passing on your senseless and ridiculous views which include HATE!

Love in God's perception has no preference or limit!!!!!!!

Wow this guy is sick, but whats more sickening is people on here acting like he cant be judged while his record in politics and his rhetoric in the past has been very hateful and divisive and judgmental, and yet scum on here act so pissed that some dare to analyze this demonic freak. The fact remains is that people are born gay and should be treated with respect and all rights afforded everyone, period, that means you dont hide who you are ,youre not treated like a second class citizen and being gay is not about sex,its who youre attracted to and who you love. So for the mininformed hatemongrels in here who say we have gay friends but you dont talk about the gay sex part IM kind of floored by such bigotry and stupidity. Keep this country free and modern and decent, keep conservative republicans far awary from washington d.c and vote democrat.so we dont turn into a christo-fascist version of the taliban.

Re: mrbluehopes – I don't get the impression that he was referring to having a homosexual orientation as being a choice. Rather, it seems he was saying that acting on it would be a choice. As a straight woman, I choose who I do and don't sleep with, so of course the same is true of gays.
    .
On another note (and this isn't directed to you, mrbluehopes) he's more than likely not going to be nominated. As for me, I'm voting third party this year. There is one thing that annoys me, and both Republicans and Democrats are guilty of this, I think. I don't like when people are intolerant of people who disagree with their views. It's one thing to disagree, but it's quite another to mock and hate those you disagree with.

    397

Re: Ashley – No offense, but the (probably untrue) generalization that those who see nothing wrong with what he said are "gross Southern conservatives" makes it seem like you're quite biased against those who disagree with you. I'm not a Republican, but I don't think emotional personal attacks make convincing arguments. Please don't take what I said offensively, by the way. I just disagree with how you presented your views.

The thing you are failing to realize about Huckabee is that he may be more GENUINELY respectful of homosexuals than many other candidates that claim to be just to receive votes. You punish him for being honest and more intelligent on this matter than you could ever be. Go ahead and call me names. At least I'm not willing to sacrifice my integrity, and neither is Huckabee. Good for him. It is sad that there is only one honest person running fro president.
