Speaking Homo

Filed under: Gay Gay Gay > Tyra Banks > Mike Huckabee

Our favorite* Republican presidential hopeful, Mike Huckabee, was on Tyra's talk show talking about the gays and same sex marriage.

He's so damn funny! We just wanna get Ellen's dildo and smack him upside the head!

    GREAT COMMENT CHAD
It is amazing how they are building a duped following that act like this behavior can not be judged. It can and it is and it will.

He and his followers are the bad people of early 21st Century America — pure and simple judgement.

Straight Supremists are as bad as White Supremists

    Re: rjp3
A straight supremacist? How exactly is he reserving "special rights" for straight people over homosexuals? The man clearly explained that he wants to maintain an institution as it has been maintained for centuries. The whole reason why the church sanctifies religion and the government encourages it is because children are the end product. Welcome to 2008. What a homosexual does with his or her partner is not marriage in the religious or political sense and so you can't call it that. Enlighten me as to why homosexuals want to be considered married anyway.

Re: rjp3 – I respectfully disagree that it's a logic trap in the sense that there's a distinction between innate orientation and chosen action. White Supremacists hate blacks when blackness is an innate quality with no corresponding behavior that accompanies it (if that makes any sense). People like Huckabee do not claim to hate the innate homosexuality of any given individual; what they claim to disagree with is homosexual behavior. I think that's an important distinction.
    .
Now, you disagree with Huckabee's religious/moral views. I certainly don't think it makes you a bigot or a supremacist of any sort just because you believe that your views are truer and more valid than his. When you strongly disagree with someone's behavior (like Huckabee's, for example), you're automatically dismissing their views/actions as being less valid and morally sound than your own, which is fine, but in a sense, you're doing what you claim you hate in Huckabee. Not hating Huckabee but disapproving of his views and actions is essentially the same as not hating homosexuals (like Huckabee claims) but disapproving of their actions.

    Re: Jennifer B.
The logic trap is this: What you're saying is, yeah OK, maybe I concede that a homosexual is born that way. Maybe he didn't choose his orientation. But now that he's born and is gay, if he wants to be a moral/Christian being, he must not fall in love or have sex with anyone he's attracted to for his whole life. He's attracted to men. He can't stop that feeling, and he can't choose to be with a woman- well, he can, but it will cause a lot of misery for him, his woman and their children down the road. Is that what you'd prefer? For all gay men to "choose not to act" on their attractions to other men and make some women miserable? Yes, you can choose which men you sleep with- but can you make yourself stop sleeping/falling in love with men for your entire life? Think about it. It makes no sense. It's as if to say "OK, maybe you are born gay, but now live a freak's life without any love or a loving relationship." What kind of a life is that? Oh wait, it's called a priest.

Straight Supremist want Special Rights reserved for them

Marriage provides over 1,000 benefits enshrined in national laws, covering things like hospital visitation rights, inheritance, tax structures, custody arrangements, etc. All families, both gay and straight, deserve to be recognized by the government–it would be worse for everyone to pretend families just don't exist. Most people continue to want an official stamp put on their relationships, and all the automatic rights that go along with

If you want to see how illogical your conclusions are, then try this. Stop dating men (you are a straight woman, right?) and start dating/falling in love with/having sex with WOMEN. Now, never be with a man again. It's OK if you have the FEELINGS of wanting to be with a man, but don't act on them. Make the RIGHT CHOICE (the majority choice) and be with women for the rest of your life. Can you do that? And try not to be miserable, OK? You'll bring us all down with your depression. Just go along happily and stop trying to be who you really are b/c we all don't want to see that. Love women and have sex with them b/c we want you to, and so does God. He wants you to be untrue to your feelings. That's just the kind of dude (dame?) he is! Makes sense to me!!!!

the bottom line is who he represented himself as on this show is NOT who he is. pay any attention and you will agree. he censored himself to try and acquire votes of those watching tyra. he knows he has to sound more diplomatic. don't be stupid when a candidate is on a talk show they are being a politician and gearing their words to specific audience. he is hoping tyra's audience is stupid enough to believe he is more moderate then he is. his beliefs are all based on a narrow religious view. our country is founded on our differences, including our different ethnicities, sexualities and religious beliefs. no policy should ever have anything to do with religion because we don't all believe the same thing. take a history class sometime before supporting someone who wants to even consider changing what our country is founded on, the separation of church and state

"I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God. And that's what we need to do is amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than trying to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view of how we treat each other and how we treat the family."

Re: Apollo – I definitely see what you're saying, but you have to understand that I haven't given my opinion on this issue. I was arguing that disagreeing with someone's views and/or behavior doesn't mean that you hate him or her.
    .
I don't think a gay man, for example, should date a straight woman. From personal experience, I know how difficult and hurtful that can be for both parties. Not to get too personal here, but my first love came out as a gay man after we dated throughout my teen years, and the whole thing was intensely painful for the both of us. Anyhow, my personal views on this issue are irrelevant. If gay people choose to be in homosexual relationships, that's totally their choice. What I was arguing, however, was that Christians who disagree with homosexual behavior from a moral standpoint aren't always doing so because they hate gay people. I do think it's possible to like and respect someone even when you don't like what they say or do. I've got many friends who disagree with me and the things I do, and vice versa.
    .
Wow, this is really long. Sorry about that. Anyhow, thank you for your civil response. Your response (and RP3's, too) was generally kind and respectful, which is exactly what I was arguing for. You didn't agree with what I wrote, necessarily, but you were kind. That's how it should be, I think.

    Re: rjp3
Seriously, could you please stop using the phrase straight supremacist? You're assigning a term to people, including myself, that don't think of themselves as such. All you're succeeding in doing is forming a false dichotomy between straight and homosexual people, further alienating homosexuals. Why don't you instead focus on the issue at hand. You haven't addressed my point about being able to bear children. Who is talking about love? Do you think the government awards love with tax breaks? They couldn't care less. Getting married (in the traditional sense) ensures the species survival and maintains the integrity of the American way of life. Until you can convince the government otherwise, you're not getting any "special" rights.

  24. Apollo says – reply to this

    424

    Re: Jennifer B.
I completely agree that people have a right to their opinions, what they like and don't like, etc. But the problem here is that the laws are on the side of those who disagree that homosexuals are innately entitled to the same rights as heteros. Heteros can choose to get married/or not. To visit their partner in the hospital/or not. To adopt children/or not. Etc- there are many other examples, as another astute commenter wrote. This isn't fair, in my opinion. I am a straight woman, as are you, but I think it's wrong to tell other people who love each other they can't get married if they want to. Hey, if they want to be as miserable as all my straight friends who are married, who am I to stop them? Just kidding here.

    Re: Jennifer B.
Thank you also for your respectful and thoughtful response. I just think it's dangerous to tell someone "Hey, I like you, I just don't like that part of you who wants to be in love with someone you're attracted to" It's just such a deep part of what a person is- love, relationships, sex- when you tell a person you don't like that part of them, I imagine it's felt by the gay person as a total rejection. I think it would feel very hateful to me, to know that a person "accepts me" the way I was born, but doesn't think it's right that I act on my feelings of love for another person. Crazy example, but if you say a cat, "Well, I accept that you were born a cat. But I don't accept that you sleep 20 hours a day." Well, I am a cat. What do you want me to do? That's what I do- sleep. A lot. Take me as I am, and accept me. Or, don't take me at all, and don't pretend to like me if you can't accept my innate behavior.

Re: Apollo – I'm not so sure how hurtful that would be, honestly, but I can only speak for myself. I've done things considered sinful (e.g., premarital sex), and one could argue that I was just acting on my innate heterosexual desires. If a devout Christian said that they didn't agree with my having premarital sex (which is generally considered to be just as wrong as homosexual activity in the Christian tradition), but that they liked and respected me as a person regardless of my actions, I don't think I'd care all too much about their disapproval on a personal level. Any honest Christian would admit that everyone (fellow Christians, atheists, gays, etc.) sins, so it's a necessity to separate the sin from the sinner to avoid hating one's self and others, which is also against the Christian tradition. From what I understand, the ideal is not to have a them vs. us mentality regarding homosexuals. There is no them. It's all us, since we're all sinners, so I do think that most Christians are being sincere when they say that they love the sinner but hate the sin. Anyhow, that's just my understanding of the whole thing.

But Jennifer, you still haven't told me the answer to my question? Would you be able to change your orientation and date/love/have sex with only women, even though you're hetero? I know I couldn't!

10% of the population is gay. That sounds like it's a pretty good chunk of people. It's not some tiny minority, so although it's not "the norm" it's far from "abnormal." All species have gay members, not just people.

I don't think you can compare premarital sex (which is easy to hide) to being gay and "acting on it." Now, I don't think either things are sins, but that's just the kind of heathen I am! In premarital sex, you have a temporary "sin" where with gay sex, everything you do (in the eyes of the church) is wrong wrong wrong. You can't even live your life- there's not comparison there. YOU can go on and get married and have a life. And the gays? Well, they just have to be loveless and become monks I guess?

Re: Apollo – No, I highly doubt I'd ever be able to change my sexual orientation, but then again, I think that most gay people are unable to change theirs as well. I've never been one of those people who think gays can go to a shrink and turn everything around. Maybe that's the case for some people (I don't know), but it doesn't seem to be the norm.
    .
If premarital sex is easy to hide, why isn't homosexual activity also easy to hide? I'm not sure I understand your point with that, but then again, I'm sort of exhausted, so it probably went over my head. ;-) My main point with that, though, was that people can and do disagree with things I've done in my life, all the while maintaining respect for me. I've got friends who are the polar opposite of me politically, religiously, and philosophically (all of which are fairly important to me), so I truly think it's possible to disagree with a homosexual relationship without rejecting or hating the homosexuals involved.

    454

Re: Apollo – Part 2: I've purposely avoided revealing my views on gay marriage because it's such a hot-button issue and is too complex to discuss on a website like this (since the discussion could go on for weeks). The same would be true on other controversial topics, like abortion, the death penalty, etc. I am a Catholic believer, but the thing is, I'm definitely not the best Catholic by any stretch of the imagination, so I don't exactly feel qualified to represent Christianity. But all the same, it is my understanding that Christians believe that all people are called to deny some of their personal desires for a greater good, namely their eternal salvation. It seems Christianity would teach that homosexuals have an enormous cross to bear, and that living without a companion would be extremely difficult/unpleasant, but that it would benefit them in the long-run. The same would be true for straight people who are unmarried or people who are divorced. Christianity teaches that there are different types of love, and that unmarried people needn't be loveless. Of course, gay people can and do disagree with Christianity, and that's their choice. It certainly doesn't seem easy to be gay and devoutly Christian, but then again, it's really hard to be a devout Christian nowadays anyway. Being a horrible Christian, I know how it is, so I'd imagine it must be a lot harder for gays.

Re: Apollo – Part 3: Why Christianity views homosexual activity, premarital sex, and the like as sinful is a whole other discussion, though. We could go on for ages if that came up. The gist of my original argument: it's possible to love the sinner but hate the sin.

i must give it to him.. i've said this throughout the entire campaign he expresses himself very well. first, like other people have said, he doesn't speak from a position of hate.. so i have no problem with his expression even though i completely disagree with him. still, he seems to be of sober thought. fact is, we should have discussion with people like mike huckabee because we can have an adult conversation and come to an adult conclusion as we've had in many other countries like canada etc (where gay marriage is legal). we don't need just rhetoric, we need logical debates, and if that occurred in the US, gay marriage would be legal. another thing i would caution for those who say gays are now being intolerant, don't stereotype. you'll have some gays who are intolerant, uneducate, bigots, educated, self hating, open, logical etc etc.. being gay doesn't make us all of one thought, just like straight people. imagine that!

I see nothing wrong with what this man said. It's his personal opinion and he has the freedom to express it. It's not like he sat there and said, all gays are going to hell and should repent and change their ways. He simply said that while he doesn't agree with the lifestyle or with redefining the institution of marriage. I myself, don't think that marriage should be redefined but if gays want to be recognized as a couple then a civil union might be the answer. I think that gays deserve the same rights as straight couples in terms of benefits, insurance coverage etc. And his statement about teaching Evolution as a theory and not a fact is bang on. The theory is full of wholes!

  66. Apollo says – reply to this

    466

    Re: Cori
When scientists use the word "theory" it doesn't have the same meaning that we commonly think of. In everyday use, a theory is a hunch, or an idea that we try to prove. In science, a theory is a well-documented, well-supported, well-substantiated explanation for observations. It is almost completely the opposite of what you think it means. This is a common misconception by people who don't really understand scientific terms. It is a widely used argument employed by religious folks who wish to teach Creationism. Don't be fooled. Educate yourself and don't repeat things you hear without studying up a bit first. This is why other countries make fun of us- we are a highly uneducated and ignorant country. Sorry to say, but it's true.

I belive the meaning of life is love and i believe in god and i believe in evolution and i believe that god made me gay for a reason, not a test of my faith, but the next step of love and acceptance of all different peoples. You have the right to live your life anyway you choose, but the idea of redefining marriage to suite the needs of the gay population is wrong for this country and future generations of children. Children need to have a mom and dad and it would be selfish to deprive them of that.

I think by some of the language and grammar on these comments, we are dealing with people not even old enough to vote. Angrily attacking people for their views do not make you seem smart or make people want to listen with an open mind. If you don't like Huckabee, vote for someone else, simple as that. The sad thing is, alot of the people have no clue about the issues. They rely on whomever the media or a celebrity is endorsing. Be responsible and learn about where the candidates stand on the most pressing issues today. Check out their voting records and try to listen to their message. After that, cast a ballot and stop whining and fighting like school-age children fighting over candy. Social issues like gay marriage aren't going to dictate who becomes President this time around anyway, so the whole argument is kind of irrelevant.

    478

Dear JENNIFER B, I have read your entire comments. Love the sinner, hate the sin. That is a nice message;however, in today's society, it is hardly practiced. Do you believe homosexuality is a sin? If not, and if you do respect homosexuals and do not think of them as sinners for them being so, can it be possible that you fight for them as well so that they may have peace in living their lives? Of course, not all Republicans or those who choose conservatism are anti-gay but telling homosexuals that it's okay but denying them (by voting and etc) their rights to live as equal citizens is like granting someone independence but giving them boundaries and restrictions. Nevertheless, I agree with Apollo. It is rare to have a pleasant debate and conversation with someone who doesn't rely on curse words and degrading insults to make their point. I wish I could have the same in another topic I am conversing in.

Re: Cashmere Mafia – Thank you for your kind words. Yeah, it is nice and refreshing to have peaceful, respectful debates like this with people like you and Apollo. :-)
    .
As a Catholic believer, I do not think that having a homosexual orientation is sinful, though I do think that homosexual activity, among other things, is sinful. The thing is, I think that many of the things I choose to do are sinful as well, so I certainly don't think I'm any less of a sinner than the next person. I really don't have any reason to lie when I say that I have people in my life who I disagree with on many points (and vice versa), so from personal experience, I know it's possible to love the sinner but hate the sin.
    .
Unfortunately, people don't always love the sinner as well as they should. I guess that's to be expected, though, since we all regularly fall short of the ideal. Nevertheless, I try to wish everyone well in life (what is meant by that can be disagreed upon, I think), and as tempted as I am to give my opinion on the gay marriage issue, I don't think this website is the place to do so, unfortunately.

    Re: Jennifer B.
You have kind of made my point for me. You say that you also are a sinner, because of "the many things I choose to do." Gay people who are born gay do not choose to do the things they do. They ARE the things they do. They are gay, and they love who they are attracted to- they do not choose that, any more than straight people choose their orientation. The sins which you speak of- premarital sex, stealing, whatever- those are real, true choices. You can do them, or not do them- it's up to you. But being (note the word BEING) gay is not a temporary choice that you can say- "oops, I fucked up-I sinned." So you say that his BEING gay isn't a sin, but his ACTING on it is. Well, if you steal or lie (sins) you can easily NOT do that anymore. But if you are gay and have sex- how do you not do that anymore? It's a permanent state of being

  91. Jennifer B. says – reply to this

    491

Re: Apollo – Since sexual orientation isn't a choice, simply being attracted to the same or opposite sex isn't considered sinful. Gays, being human, have free will to choose between certain actions. From a Christian perspective, they have two choices: they can choose to act on their attractions and have sex with members of the same sex, or they can choose to not act on their attractions. The latter wouldn't be considered sinful. As a straight woman, I too have two choices: I can act on my attractions and have sex, or I can choose to not act on my attractions. Again, the latter also wouldn't be considered sinful, but even for me, the former would be. Gays and straights both exercise caution and free will in their daily lives. Few people, gay or straight, sleep with everyone they find attractive, for example, and that's because we essentially choose who sleep with; we exercise our free will when it comes to behavior. You argue that since gays are who they are, they are their behavior. If heterosexuals are who they are, how come they aren't their behavior as well? Gays can't choose who they have sex with, but straight people can? I apologize, but I don't quite follow what you mean by that, as I'm not sure it seems consistent to me (I don't mean any offense by that).

    Re: Jennifer B.
Yes, you can CHOOSE who you sleep with, or not. But you can not CHOOSE who you are ATTRACTED to. How lucky for you, and for me, that we are attracted to the opposite sex. You are fortunate in that who you are both attracted to and may choose (in the eyes of religion) are consistent. And what to do if one is gay? Well, poor them! God says it's OK if you're gay, but not OK to act on it. Hmmmm… How unfortunate. What is one to do? So my original question to you stands. Would you be willing/able to go your whole life without love/sex so that you may be "saved" in the eyes of God? I think you know exactly what I'm asking, and I think we all know it's an unreasonable thing to expect of a person. It's a no-win for gays. I can see why they sometimes turn their backs on certain churches. They'd have to be celibate their whole lives in order to be without sin. Crazy stuff!

  94. Jennifer B. says – reply to this

    494

Re: Apollo – I would agree that it'd be extremely difficult to be chaste my whole life. I have difficulty with that now, and I'm straight, and there's also the possibility that I'll one day get married. I don't know what it'd be like if I were gay, though I suppose I'd struggle like I do now, and perhaps even more so. Christianity isn't an easy religion to follow regardless of one's sexual orientation, and I don't think it's meant to be. Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II, for example, chose to go their whole lives without sex or romantic relationships, so while living that sort of life isn't impossible, it's definitely, totally not easy. From what I've read, it's meant to be challenging and hardcore, but ultimately rewarding in the long-run. One goal is to overcome mundane human desires and to be given eternal salvation; Christianity teaches that that's everyone's destiny. Of course, like I've said, many people can and do reject Christianity, and that's their choice. I don't think anyone should be forced to believe that. Like anything else, it's a choice.

  95. Apollo says – reply to this

    495

These types of issues are why I dislike organized religions- all of them. They are exclusive by nature. The rules are made up by people, and then they exclude groups of other people who don't believe in that group's rules. The bible, torah, koran, etc. were written by people. They are translated by people, often incorrectly. People fight over what they think is God's will. They kill each other! It's crazy! I am not an athiest, but organized religions just don't work for me. I believe that God accepts everyone AND everyone's actions, so long as they don't hurt another person. That's it. Simple. God just wants us to be nice to each other. If two men love each other, have sex, get married, and are not hurting each other, I think God approves.

    496

Re: Apollo – Well, of course, you're entitled to your opinion, though I'd disagree with some of what you wrote. But I guess that's another discussion in and of itself. I will say this, though: even if organized religion did not exist, I think people would find other reasons to be horrible to one another, unfortunately. People tend to fight over what's most important to them. I believe people are inherently good, though. We all just make bad choices sometimes.

Your calling people sinners while you pick and choose what parts of the bible to follow. If you enjoy Lobster or Shrimp Cocktail by the ignoring the biblical ban on eathing them (www.godhatesshrimp.com). And you best never have sex during your "time of the month". Banned too. (But feel free to own slaves — bible is cool with that!).

The biblical bans on homosexuality, masterbation and promotion of marriage were manipulations to build TRIBES in the desert and avoid pleasure for pleasure sake as it did not always lead to procreation — and they needed more people in the tribes to fight in wars.

So be a STRAIGHT SUPREMIST — it is legal. Just like it is legal to be a bible based WHITE SUPREMIST, but know you belief that homosexuality is a sin makes you no better than a bible base WHITE SUPREMIST. Even if you a liberal and say live and let live and think gays should be 'free" to be gay. (You so kind with your blessing.)

You'll do what you want to do, but in all honesty, I think you should grant people who disagree with you the benefit of the doubt. As for the whole straight supremacist thing, I responded to your comments on that yesterday, but you never responded back. Instead of calling people bigots and straight supremacists, you'd probably make more progress in a discussion by actually responding to the opposing arguments in a calm, thorough fashion (like Apollo does).
