Thankfully, the baby is alright! CLICK HERE to read the article accompanying this headline.

Pregnant woman uses train toilet, baby slips out

A newborn baby girl survived an ignoble birth after slipping down the toilet bowl of a moving Indian train onto the tracks when a pregnant woman unexpectedly gave birth while relieving herself on Tuesday.

"My delivery was so sudden," said the Bhuri Kalbi, the mother of the infant, born two months prematurely. "I did not even realize that my child had slipped from the hole in the toilet."

Kalbi, a 33-year-old woman from a village in Rajasthan, fainted on the toilet seat after the birth for a few minutes before waking up and alerting her family.

"They stopped the train and ran on the tracks to find the baby," she said, speaking from her hospital bed in the western city of Ahmedabad.

Railway staff at a nearby station were alerted and soon found the newborn girl lying uninjured on pebbles by the track. She is now in intensive care because of her premature birth, doctors said.

Most toilets on Indian trains are filthy chutes emptying directly onto the tracks.

    204

yer heard about this…as for not feeling it etc tha lady was only 7months so the babe was 2months premmie (therefore small) and the lady went into labour and fainted (thus not awake for the labour). I do wander about the placenta (to wich the umbilical cord is attached) though i presume that would of been pulled from her when the baby slipped out

    what a lucky little baby

    Re: sara alexis

The umbilical cord attaches to a baby in it's belly, the other end is attached to the placenta which is attached to the uterine wall. When a woman gives birth, she is not just delivering the baby, but also all the stuff the baby lived in and the lining. The baby was attached to the umbilical cord, which was still attached to the uterine lining, which since this occurred on a train where the suction from this hole on the toilet was probably strong, it had a vacuum-like effect from the baby's weight once she had emerged and just sucked her and the afterbirth out.
Therefore, the baby was probably still attached to the umbilical cord.

I gotta say, when I gave birth to my daughter I thought I just needed to use the restroom…I didn't even realize I was in labor until a few minutes before I actually had her. Luckily I was not on an Indian train…
ALSO, the unbilical cord is connected to the placenta, NOT the mother. Thus, it probably came out right after the baby did.

I'm sure, she thought the baby girl was dead so she just called people, playing the "good mother".
She must have been really disappointed when she saw the girl was alive.
    She's ALIVE… ALIVEEEEEE!!!!

  43. Sandy (not a fatass) says – reply to this

    243

first of all my water didn't break, the midwife did it. I did quite a few pushes, some on the toilet b/c it was necessary. when my son did come out. I have to admit I didn't really feel it. I was like, OK. wow. did she pull it out for me?

maybe the train was traveling slowly and the baby was "placed" on the track with the umbilical cord for support then "cut" as the train pulled away.

so this story seems plausible. maybe wishful thinking on my part.

  44. Nat says – reply to this

    244

Let me get this straight??? Do they really just let all the shit go onto the railroad tracks???? Yuck. That can't be pretty. Well, thankfully, the baby was ok. Who knew you could accidently give birth while taking a shit… weird.

  45. nicole says – reply to this

    245

you guys are stupid the umbilical cord isnt attached to the mom its attached to the placenta which comes out too.. its not like they snip a cord and then stuff it back in there and wiat til she gets preggers again… but yah.. CRAZY! how did it not get hurt on the tracks though? thats fucked

  46. gab says – reply to this

actually .. the same thing happened to 2 ppl i know.. and this was in canada. they went to the bathroom.. and the baby slipped out into the toilet. unfortunately the baby didn't survive. but this is true, it happens. and i'm guessing that the umbilical cord snaps out?

  52. jen says – reply to this

    252

Re: sarah – that cord is not attached to the mother .. its attaches to the planctea or something. so when the mother gave birth .. the plactea thing came out as well.. and yepp she didnt realize because the baby was premature and the mother fainted.

  53. GIGI says – reply to this

    253

If you deliver the fetus and placenta all at the same time, the cord is still attached to the baby. However, the placenta is attached at the same time to. This is seen sometimes in women who deliver premature. One push and everything comes out.

  57. This is crazy says – reply to this

    257

The umbilical cord is attached to the placenta which stays in usually after birth and you deliver it as you would a baby or it comes right out, but thats where the cord is attached to and they cut it, then a few mins later you deliver the placenta or is just slides out or something…with her she must of just lost it all, I can not believe she just peed and had a baby and didnt know it, thats a bit far fetched

  58. DBeautiful says – reply to this

WOW!!!!!!!!! That's crazy and I hope that baby is ok. I just don't understand how she couldn't feel that the baby was coming out and what happen to the umbilical cord? Did it broke, because I don't think it's suppose to do that? That's weird, but like I say I hope the baby is ok.

NO, there are something called CONTRACTIONS and the WATER BREAKING. Babies don't come out without some sort of SIGN such as those two. And babies don't come out of the same hole as your piss and crap, so I'm sure she woulda been able to tell the difference, unless she's THAT STUPID or she didn't want it in the first place and then changed her mind!

Female infanticide is epidemic in Gujarat state. You can be sure that if she had given birth to a boy, the baby would never have "accidently slipped" down the toilet hole to the tracks. Now her and her family's hope will be to profit financially from this media attention.

    266

I don't believe it all because the umbilical cord would be intact.
However, the toilet/train situation I do believe. What most of us folks over here don't realize is that things are often so poor over there that people will go to the train tracks to do their Morning Glory in the morning. We're so very spoiled over here that we don't realize how other countries (and sometimes OUR VERY OWN) live in such impoverished circumstances.

  67. three says – reply to this

    267

Oops now I see the placenta/umb.cord connection. OK, then I totally believe it. AND the railroad toilet issue.

The child survived, we shouldn't be asking ourselves how-we should acknowledge the fact that the newborn is healthy and unharmed. That is all that matters.
No, the umbilical cord is attached to the placenta, that of which the mother delivers-having passed out, she was clearly unaware.

The best part about those Indian trains is that all sorts of painful debris flies up and hits you in the wazzoo as the train flies down the tracks. Nothing like a giant chunk of gravel, thrown up by a 60mph train, to make you clench.

    277

Most likely the woman dilated to 10 without labor or contractions, causing the baby to pass without the mom suffering through labor. Premature dilation can, untreated, cause miscarriage in earlier stage pregnancy. In the West the cervix can actually be sewn shut (ouch) when mom is dilating prematurely.

Look at the pic of the mom on the bbc news site. She looks completely starved. Their article says "Indian train toilets are notoriously unhygienic.
Users are typically required to stand or squat over a filthy chute that channels the effluent straight onto the tracks." Squatting, unhealthy, weakend mom, underweight baby, premature dilation, a recipe for disaster. Mom's lucky she didn't bleed to death. And for those of you harping about the cord, good God women learn something about your own bodies! The cord is attached to the placenta, not a chain imbedded in the mother.

But the VAST majority of women, even with a small baby, are going to feel it………..and they just somehow know that they have just given birth. Even without much pain you should feel an especially HUGE pressure worse than taking a titanic shit. Even men know when they've taken an especially huge dump and love to check and pat them selfs on the back. But anyone who can squirt out a baby, wipe their ass and walk away saying " I think I may have flushed a baby down the toilet!" Sorry. You're either mentally retarded or you don't want the baby.

Re: Janice – I am an ER Nurse, I see babies born all of the time, with one push (lucky women) placenta, cord, baby and all. If a baby is premature and small, it is quite easy to deliver with only straining. The women's placenta was probably detatching from the uterine wall, and that is why she delivered early. She is lucky she did not bleed to death.
