Drew Barrymore is donating $1 million to charity.
Of her own money!!!
The actress gave the gift on Monday to the World Food Programme (WFP) and the funds have been earmarked to feed thousands of schoolchildren in Kenya.
Barrymore announced her very generous contribution on the Oprah show.
Drew is a WFP ambassador against hunger and her gift kicks off the agency's $3 billion "Fill the Cup" campaign that aims to feed 59 million hungry school children in developing countries for a year.
WFP hopes the United States will be able to donate enough money to feed 10 million of those children.
"I have seen with my own eyes what a difference a simple cup of nutritious porridge can make in a child's life," said the Barrymore, who has traveled to Kenya twice in the past two years for WFP. "It helps them learn, stay healthy and sets them on track for a bright future. I urge everyone — everywhere — to help WFP 'Fill the Cup' for hungry children, and make hunger history."

Show me ONE starving child in America that isn't hungry due to their own fucken parents! I want to see ONE person asking for help for their child and not getting it here in the US. 99.9% of the time when a child in America is hungry it's because their parents are drinking and/or addicted to drugs and the money goes to help mommy and/or daddy get drunk and high. When Cameron Diaz called into the show, I excitedly waited for her to match the donation, and I was so disappointed that she just said, "good job Drew!"
There are two things wrong with this:
1) Feeding children for a year will make very little difference. It isn't a bowl of porridge they need it's the ability to sustainably make thier own food in the future.
Buying food for them is all very well but in the long run the money could be better spent on tools and education in order to sustain a healthy country.
2) Why the fuck is she announcing it on TV? If people like Angelina Jolie and Bill Gates did that every time THEY donated we'd been pretty bored of thier mugs by now.

Drew is extremely generous to give such a wonderful gift! When Cameron Diaz phoned in, she should have matched it!! You could tell by the look on Drew's face that she thought Cameron was going to. Many of these countries in Africa have plenty of food just sitting in warehouses. The problem isn't not having the food, but getting the food to the hungry. The goverment, the militia or whomever has the most guns keep NGOs (non-govermental orgs) from distributing the food to it's own people. This is not new information. Now if Miss Drew could convince the warring factions to let the food be distributed to the hungry then I would gladly kiss her ass and tell her she's wonderful.

Wow. That is really great that she is doing something like that, $1 million is a lot of money and even if it is for a publicity stunt, she is still being charitable and very generous.
However, what concerns me is the popularity of donating/helping out other countries when there is so much poverty here in the United States. There is nothing wrong with helping less fortunate nations, however celebrities have made it seem more "glamorous" than helping those in our own country. In my opinion, both forms of charity should be equally praised and publicized.

What she did might have been an attempt to get the word out to the world that Americans aren't all greedy and corrupt (despite being in a war that is about oil and military contracts).
