It's True

Filed under: Sad Sad > Patrick Swayze

wenn1140717__opt1.jpg

Patrick Swayze has pancreatic cancer, his publicist confirmed on Wednesday.

The average life expectancy of someone diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas is six to nine months, with only 4 percent of patients living more than five years.

And, according to the National Enquirer, who broke the sad news first, Patrick's cancer has already spread to other parts of his body - making his chances of survival even more slim.

Let us all sends our prayers, positive energy and thoughts to him. That he is not in pain. And that his family does not suffer too much either.

So incredibly, heartbreakingly sad.

Aw man. I've really enjoyed his work through the years. Who knows how many times I've seen Dirty Dancing? And his part in Donnie Darko was great. He's been a leading man with a good sense of self-depreciation. I lost my wonderful stepmother to pancreatic disease. This is harsh. He has all my best wishes.

Maybe Patrick is beyond caring at this point, but as a fan of his (and a human being), I am disgusted at whoever leaked this story to the Enquirer. The man deserved to live his remaining weeks with as much dignity as possible (difficult, given the disease). Instead, his death is being used to sell web clicks.

Thanks, Patrick for all the fond memories of your movies. I hope they work like crazy to control the pain, and it ends quickly.

    326

This is very sad. The problem with panceractic cancer is, if found in time, like many cancers, can be cured/ treated successfully like Steve Jobs. However, the overwhelming majority of the cases are not found until they already spread to other organs as was the case with my mother and grandmother. For those of you that have mentioned family members you should get in touch with the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreactic Cancer Research they have made major strides in funding research on this disease and gains have been made. One of the big issues is of course early detection and a simple, effective early detection method is still years away but for those at risk via family history see what Lustgarten ahs to offer.

    328

My dad passed away from pancreatic cancer just 8 month after his diagnosis. This illness is a disgusting, evil thing and it is so demeaning. :-( I just pray things will be different and a miracle will come for the Swayze's. Pancreatic cancer is also one of the least funded cancers there's barely any money going towards research for this disease so maybe the only light at the end of the tunnel is this is that pancreatic cancer will become more widely known to get more of an awareness…

My uncle was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer almost four years ago. He was given 3-6 months to live all the way back then. He lost his brave fight two weeks ago. He never even smoked. There are few nerve endings in the pancreas. By the time there are symptoms, it's already too late. My heart goes out to the Swayze family. It is a terrible disease.

To say the least, I am so sorry and heartbroken to hear that my man, Patrick Swayze has been diagnosed with such an awful illness and that it is one of the fastest yet incureable form of cancer. I pray that he will will be given the medicines needed to help him thru the pain and that his family be there for him and share the good time and love each other even more during the coming days. MY LOVE AND PRAYERS TO ALL OF YOU GUYS! GOD BLESS!

    338

For fuck's sake, that is DANGEROUS INCORRECT information, Perez. Google neuroendocrine tumors and you will see that there are pancreatic cancer survivors for 10 or more years. You have no idea what tissue type, etc, his cancer is… People hear bullshit like that and become suicidal. Patrick may have a long time left on this earth. Maybe he's a candidate for a Whipple procedure. You don't know squat, dude, so please be more careful putting that shit out there in the universe.

    342

Perez- please hype the FUCK out the fact that pancreatic cancer is a very violent swift killer with no screening process or drugs that are viable. the drugs that oncologists use are at lease 20 years old and ineffective. you have a large captive audience on this site. it would put pancreatic cancer in the minds and mouths of people. the more talk about it, the more action that can be taken. sadly, no one pays attention to anything unless a celebrity has it. people have probably already forgotten that pavarotti died from this.

  43. SadSally says – reply to this

    343

Yes, sad. I love Patrick swayze and hope he fights this hard and stays strong. But c'mon, people from all walks of life get diagnosed with cancer every day. Its not like he is the only one out there fighting cancer. The announcement made it sound that way. A little broader perspective (beyond the zone) is needed sometimes Perez!!!

Millions upon Millions of men, women, children of all ages are lined up in hospitals all over the country getting treatment as we speak.

    346

I'm so sad. I've always loved him - we have the same birthday.
My mom had gall bladder cancer which is a disease in the same vein as pancreatic - typically undetected until it's too late and extremely aggressive. It makes me cry knowing that another family will be going through what mine went through. My only hope is that this might be a catalyst for more discussion about this family of cancers and open the doors for more fund-raising and research. I hope Patrick and his family find strength in their faith at this time.

PS: I went through all the comments and saw so many of us have lost people to cancer within the last year or so. If anyone wants to talk, my e-mail is kapooky9@aol.com

OMG, this sucks out loud! Pancreatic cancer is always terminal (with a short life expectancy) because by the time it's diagnosed, the f*@!ing cancer is in the late stages. Add to that that it's mets to other organs… the prog is bloody dismal. I am so unbelievably saddened by this news. I treasure his body of work, and my heart goes out to his lovely wife, Lisa, and his family. Much love.
