Patrick Swayze is remaining optimistic, despite his recent diagnosis with pancreatic cancer.
The actor's publicist released this statement Wednesday afternoon:
"Actor Patrick Swayze has been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. Patrick's physician Dr. George Fisher states, 'Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far. All of the reports stating the timeframe of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic.' Patrick is continuing his normal schedule during this time, which includes working on upcoming projects. The outpouring of support and concern he has already received from the public is deeply appreciated by Patrick and his family."

My best friends' father had Pancreatic Cancer and lived for years with the illness!
It's all about how you mentally deal with it.
He had all the love and support from his family and friends, so it's what made him stay strong and continue his fight with the disease.
Sadly, he passed away in August 2007, but he gave Cancer a great fight!

Surviving pancreatic cancer is RARE!!!! It does happen but the odds are not good. I pray that he does have the strength to fight. I lost my dad to this in August. This man is in the fight for his life. Everyone should respect that and wish him well. A cure and a screening test for this violent and swift killer must be found! I can't find a place online to post my condolences to him - a website or message board? - so I'll do so here. This is so sad, as it is when anyone becomes this ill. I truly, truly hope he recovers and is with us for a very long time.

That he would be responding to treatment might be true but it still only means an average survival of 1-2 years instead of 6 months. Pancreatic cancer is about the worst cancer you could have so whatever they say about Patrick "doing well" and "responding" can not be really true. 100% are dead within 5-6 years. WITH treatment.

My mom died 2 months after her diagnosis w/ this terrible type of cancer. I pray his result will be better than hers was.
Bummer. Not to be the bearer of bad news; don't shoot the messenger and all of those types of cliches…but, pancreatic cancer is a true death knell. I have had seen too much of this creature called cancer in various deceased family and friends.
Take the best care of yourself that you can, Patrick. Quit the chemo and crap and you will live the rest of your days in a much better place.

I lost my father to this dreaded disease.Unfortunately it is very hard to diagnose…once they find it it is usually at stage 4. It depends on where on the pancreas the tumor is…they can do a whipple procedure and prolong life…pavoratti had this done and lived 11/2 years which is longer than most people….dramatic weight loss is a huge sign…you simply shrivle down to a shadow of your former self. PANCAN.ORG and LUSTGARDEN Foundation are good websites. God Bless Patrick..but mostly his wife and children who must watch him suffer….

I cannot believe it. I've been stunned all day long. Cancer is a bitch, and then it kills you. My mom died from breast cancer - from diagnosis to her passing away was only a short 4 years. Pancreatic cancer is the most agressive form and moves much more quickly. I pray they have caught it in its early stages and Patrick will beat the odds. God bless him and his family.

My Uncle just died from pancreatic cancer. I feel very sorry for him and his family. all the money in the world can not save you from that type of cancer.

I lost my father and his father both to pancreatic cancer. From diagnosis neither lived more than 5 months.

thats horrible, pancreatic cancer is one of the worse cancers a person can get. its a death sentence even for the people they catch it on early. most are dead within 2 years.
Patrick and others in his position MUST research all options. It is extremely harmful to jump into chemo and radiation because both techniques disqualify people from participating in experimental studies that are currently having GREAT success. I hope Patrick is getting good, healthy care and wish him the best!!! By the way, my Brother In-law was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer five years ago and given 6 months to live. He pushed and pushed for aggressive treatment and was accepted in a clinical trial that not only shrunk his tumors but allowed them to be removed. He is healthy and happy!!! Chemo is proving to be less and less warranted in these cases and patients need to beware!!!

seems that the whole '5 weeks to live' thing was just the national enquirer's way of sucking people into the story and getting more readers in
never liked his films, but the guy's a legend, got a sense of immortality about him in the way david hasselhoff has, and i wish him well in his recovery.
I wish him all the best, this is one of the worst cancers to have. I wouldnt be so optimistic though. If the extent of his disease was limited he wouldve undergone a potentially curative procedure by now (Whipple, or Traverso-Longmire or left hemipancreatectomy - depending on the location of the lesion). The fact that he is only being treated pharmacologically tells me that his lesion is unresectable (local infiltration of regional veins or distant metastasis) and the treatment in that case is only palliative, unfortunately. Pavarotti had a resection and still managed to live only 1 year postoperatively.

actually alcohol intake is the main risk factor for pancreatic carcinoma. Along with family history. The management is usually palliative tho due to the low 5 year survival rate. Surgery can be performed but it depends on the extent of the disease and any metatases. The surgery (whipples procedure) is very long and complicated and have a lot of associated complications. Hope this helps shed some light ( Im a doctor here in Ireland)

I am so so sad to hear the news about patrick, such a talanted man that has been such an inspiration in our family. Dirty Dancing was the film that made me want to dance from a very young age and i now have a 4 year old son who wants to act and dance just like patrick. No matter what happens i know that the inspiration patrick has given to many will live on for years to come
