More American Idol related news…..and this one's a doozy!
Season 1 contestant Nikki McKibbin was recently placed under psychiatric observation for 72 hours after suffering a severe breakdown in late February.
According to a police report, Nikki called a friend and told her that she was feeling depressed and wanted to kill herself. The friend called the police who arrived to find the fallen Idol with a number of pills in her hand.
Oh, boy. Not a good thing! She's even got a kid!
Nikki refused to cooperate with the police who came to her rescue and reportedly tried to kick out the windows of the cop car.
Why did she unravel?
Things weren't going well for the American Idol alum. She released an album in May '07 to a lukewarm response from the public. She was then hit with the sudden death of her mother in August.
Times can get tough, but suicide is NEVER the answer, kids.
There is always help out there. Don't be afraid to ask for it!

It's called grief!!! My Mom died in October. She was honestly the biggest love of my life outside my own son. Nothing compares to the unconditional love of a mom…and when you lose that love, it is life-altering and devastating. I know, I'm there. You people bashing this poor girl must have never experienced the death of a parent. But unless nature plays a cruel game, you will, so think before you type. Get better, Nikki. You are not alone and your son needs you!

I am suicidal. Just yesterday I tried to kill myself, but my aunt talked me out of it. I appreciate your comments about help being out there, but labeling her "loca" I think is a hurtful stigma that doesn't help the situation. I'm not recovering as fast because people are whispering "crazy" behind my back. Don't call her names. Your site is very popular and it won't be conducive to her recovery. Being crazy means the inability to consciously control one's actions, therefore becoming a danger to oneself. Being suicidal means you no longer want to live thereby also endangering oneself. Life can be unbearable sometimes and social ignominy can trigger suicidal tendencies. Some pursue drugs to cope; others seek death. While I realize name calling is part of your brand of humor, in this situation it is grossly inappropriate and ignorant. Proper respect for her situation - especially for her kids- would be good thoughts and prayers, just as you have done for Patrick Swayzee.
I liked her on the show, that is really sad. The entertainment business will chew a person up and spit them out! We should buy her album or at least a song to help her out. What is a song a buck right?

I just wanted to write this post to say that I have and am suffering from depression and have been suicidal, even up until very recently. I was hospitalized last year b/c I wanted to kill myself. I'm only saying this so that someone else who is reading this knows that they are not alone.

Some people never feel the bottomless pit of hopelessness that can hit other people. Only when U have been there, can u feel that the pain that cannot end without death. Later, U realize that there is hope, but when u are caught up in the pain, U can't see it. My prayers are with this woman, kid and all, who had a moment that no one can understand, nor judge. Depression can be caused by a combination of person's unique chemical makeup being triggered by life events. There are millions of people with depression. (Some of them, like the general population, aren't particularly nice people.)
Depressed people can many times be more kind and compassionate because they understand pain - unlike Perez, who's an ASSHOLE.
I knew Nikki fairly well she was a waitress at the Big Apple restraunt and Bar that I went to about everyday. She was always strung out on something and usually had a excuse of taking pain pills for a toothache. And I got so freaking tired of her singing Me and Bobby Mcgee she would sing it at least 2-3 times a night!
I lost my mom in 2005 and those people who haven't lost a parent yet will never understand how truly heartbreaking it is to lose the person that has been there for you your entire life. Depression hits, you don't want to do anything but lay down and your thoughts are plagued with dark thoughts about how that person is never coming back.
Help is out there but not everyone is willing to accept it at first because they don't think anyone can really help them.

I just finished reading a beautifully written book about depression called "The Noonday Demon." Anyone wanting to learn & understand more should read it.

I live in the same area as Nikki. She is a mess! She is a waitress at a dive biker bar in Arlington TX called Hot Rods and Hogs. I saw her waiting tables and did not recognize her. She looked about 40 and was so spastic that we actually thought she had tourrets syndrome. We all felt sorry for her until our waitress told us that is was Nikki Mckibbin and that she was strung out on crystal meth. It's really sad. She's not gonna make it.

I don't know why I bother to come on this site anymore. But I agree with everyone that commented on depression not defining someone as crazy. Depression is a very serious mental illness, there are various degrees of it and more people suffer from it than you all realize. And anyone that is saying she should have killed herself is an asshole. I battled with suicidal thoughts as a young teenager, tried it once with a razor and fortunately for me, it scared me enough to realize that it wasn't the answer to my problems. I also had an uncle that was manic depressive and he did indeed succeed in suicide. His family is now more screwed up than ever before because of it, especially the oldest and youngest. And it makes me angry that people are quick to say nsty things about drug addicts. Addiction is also an illness and no one deserves to be treated like dirt because they have a problem. Yes, there is help but a person needs to realize they have a problem and need help before any treatment can begin. It seems to be that she was reaching out for help when she called her friend. I wish her well and hope she can get herself straightened out for her and for her son.
