The splashy, showy staging, at odds with Lavigne's early T-shirt wearing, skateboard-riding image, makes for a more production-reliant show than Lavigne and her fans are used to. There are dancers - don't hold their introduction, a flag-waving run onto the stage, against them; they turn out to be excellent - risers, and strobe light effects. But there are nonetheless some shouts-out to Lavigne's skateboard-park beginnings, with skull and crossbones imagery splashed across the stage.
It's all very distracting, but none of it can make up for the worst damn truth about Avril Lavigne: She's not a very good singer.

Most people that say she sux have always felt that way, so you are just the people that arn't fans, and you are allowed, but go talk abou the people you like and let fans enjoy Avril.
I saw her 3 times already in concerts and she was pure talent. She actually does sing live and she does Fabulosly at it. Even the first time I saw her, I made my best friend come with me, who did not like Avril's music, but for me she came. And she even enjoyed it and said Avril deserved more credit then she had given her.
I live in Kingston now, but was in Belleville then, which are both 20 minutes from Avril's hometown. When Avril became famous, no one liked her here because they were all jealous. Everyone suddently knew her and had seen her act a certain way or do a certain thing. funny thing is most stories contradicted themselves. I know first hand not to listen to Avril gossip. She is popular here now. He Kingston show sold out in like 10 minutes. And ya, I got mine for my 4th time. YAY

Perhaps when anticipating an Avril Lavigne concert, one should take into account the lyrical prowess of someone who writes lines such as "she's like, so whatever" and adjust one's expectations accordingly.
Lavigne, 23, the punk/pop sensation from Napanee, Ont., (now living in Los Angeles) kicked off her Best Damn Tour in Victoria on Wednesday night to a mostly female, very young audience.
The splashy, showy staging, at odds with Lavigne's early T-shirt wearing, skateboard-riding image, makes for a more production-reliant show than Lavigne and her fans are used to. There are dancers - don't hold their introduction, a flag-waving run onto the stage, against them; they turn out to be excellent - risers, and strobe light effects. But there are nonetheless some shouts-out to Lavigne's skateboard-park beginnings, with skull and crossbones imagery splashed across the stage.
It's all very distracting, but none of it can make up for the worst damn truth about Avril Lavigne: She's not a very good singer.
In fact, at times Wednesday night, she was downright awful - shouting her way through lyrics that her tired voice couldn't manage or, as she often did, simply giving up and holding the microphone out to the audience while she took a breather. Sure, every rock star worth her salt does that now and again to give the audience a thrill, but Lavigne resorted to the hey-audience-you-know-the-words trick just a little too often.
The queen of the arm pump also seemed out of breath at times, as she marched back and forth across the stage. This is what Lavigne's choreography largely consisted of, although the dancers made up for it.
The show kicked off with a sparkly, choreographed version of Lavigne's hit single Girlfriend, followed by another Best Damn offering, I Can Do Better (songs one and two on the CD). Neither number hit the mark.
Lavigne's third song, a low-key version of Complicated, followed by another earlier hit, My Happy Ending, were a welcome change in tone. They allowed Lavigne to take a breath (quite literally), concentrate on her singing and get behind her guitar, where she seems most comfortable.
In fact, it wasn't until things slowed down that Lavigne really got going. Some of the best moments of the show were when she and two of her band members hiked up onto stools at the front of the stage with their guitars, playing, among other songs, a slowed-down version of her current single, Hot.
Lavigne's plans to take a seat at a pink grand piano for When You're Gone were thwarted by an equipment malfunction. As the fog rolled across the stage, it became clear that something was wrong. Technicians couldn't get the piano hooked up to the sound system. Lavigne took it all in stride, improvising and moving over to the on-stage bleachers and singing into her sparkly microphone from centre-stage. It was after this conquered disaster that Lavigne began to get more comfortable.
She was able to take a turn behind the drum set - on Runaway and then, much to the delight of some of the moms in the crowd, on a rendition of Toni Basil's Mickey - the early eighties song many people of a certain age were reminded of when they first heard Girlfriend and the CD's title song, The Best Damn Thing.
At this point, the dancers became cheerleaders. Remember the Mickey video, delighted crowd? Of course you don't. You weren't born yet. Behind the drums, Lavigne's singing seemed even more troubled.
When Lavigne dedicated I'm With You to "anyone who's been a fan since day one," anyone who could do the math realized that this was impossible for some of the younger people in the crowd. I'm With You came out on her debut album in 2002.
The stage chatter was mostly inane. "You guys are great. I love you!" Or: "You guys mean so much to me. I'm so happy!" But the power of the pint-sized punk princess was evident in her Simon Says-like introduction to He Wasn't. She had the crowd in the palm of her pumping fist.
The Avril-wannabes were out in full force, dressed in ways that made one wonder if their mothers saw them leaving the house, some wearing freshly-purchased Best Damn Thing underwear over their too-tight jeans.
And if there's any doubt about the kind of show we're talking about here, it should be noted that one of the sponsors of the show was a bubble-gum company. (People blowing bubbles of a certain size won a free T-shirt.) The stage for Lavigne's tour features a pink and black tile look up front, with a huge backdrop video screen playing a montage of shots from some of her music videos - videos anyone can see over and over again on TV or online. So why bother dwarfing the real thing with the pre-produced, familiar stuff? Her various costumes riff off a punk motif, featuring a glittery skull-and-crossbones, leopard-print cuffs, a Sgt. Pepper-esque military jacket and a pink hoodie.
Lavigne took to the stage at about 8:40 p.m. and was gone by 10. Not a very long show, but then again, it was way past bedtime for many of the people in the crowd.
There's no question this audience would have forgiven Lavigne anything - off-key, off-kilter, personality-less. It didn't matter. Fans left the show elated, on the strength of the final encore, Sk8r Boi.

Saw her in Victoria BC for the first concert of this tour on Wednesday and I have to say, she was okay…just okay. I don't agree with you about the dancers though. They sucked big time and were hideous. The sang pretty good - I don't know how many concerts you've been to, but you have to expect some difference between live and recorded. At least she is actually singing and not lip-syncing!!!!!!!! The concert wasn't lame, but it didn't suck either. And yes, it could have been better, but honestly this new Avril wasn't like the old Rock and Roll Avril we're used to. And once she gets into it, she'll be better.

Okay, so I just got back from the Avril show here in Kamloops, and I went in going with the attitude it was going to be shitty, but acually I was suprised, it was really good! First of all, Boys Like Girls were amazing, and then when Avril came on, I thought to myself, "Uh oh… time to leave." But actually she sang really well, kept everyone entertained and had an amazing set. The dancers were great with Avril throwing in some nice moves too.
Oh, and it was sold out.
Finally people are realising she has no talent! Hearing her live hurts the ears and sometimes she lip syncs.
Only 9 year olds listen to that crap anyways, maybe she should go join Girls Aloud or something.
Those comments are wrong. She truly has a beautiful voice. Her music and personality could use a makeover but you cannot doubt she is truly talented.

My daughter and I went to her concert in Vancouver on Friday and loved it, just as good when we went 5 years earlier. The place was packed. Sometimes it was hard to hear her as the fans were singing along to every song. There was lots of energy, she sounded good and spent quite a bit of time interacting with the audience. I can tell you don't spend much time around teenage girls, especially Canadian teenage girls! Their all like her, happy and loud with their friends, sulky and quiet with anyone in authority. They're girls!

She does not lip sync. Don't like her style, her song, then say so, but don;t lie and say she can't sing live and that you were at the concert and she lip sync.

i was just as trhe avril lavigne concert last night in Kelowna, B.C and she was amazing. She didnt lip sync and she was very energetic. The crowd loved her, and she did some really good accoustic versions of her songs. She also came out after her show and signed autographs for her fans, and she was very nice and greatful to everyone. Avril Lavigne's concert was amazing, one of the best i've ever seen
