i agree that her statements were hideous and disgusting and she should not be spreading them— but also, she can't be bullied into an apology. that does nobody any good. her constituents just need to know what she stands for, and make sure if they don't agree that they don't elect her again. not everyone in this country has the same opinion on everything, but our government is supposed to give everyone a voice. so, in theory, if her constituents are all homophobes, she's actually doing her job just fine. the point is that it's all out in the open, not that she be bullied into lying or giving a fake apology. she's a homophobe with a twisted view of reality. she has been exposed. that's all that needs to be done.
As a person whos worked in Congress, just an FYI, its great to send your opinions to a Congressperson or Senator, but if you aren't from their state or district, they won't read your letters, they'll just throw them away without looking at them. Mail interns are trained to look at where it comes from before even giving it time. I would suggest sending opinions to your own Congressperson or Senator urging them not to support their fellow colleague because of her actions.
It sounds like she's living in 1950. But if that was true, she would be in the HOME and not the HOUSE! Times have changed, lady. Get a grip!

Re: a person – You forget she's a Representative. She represents the great state of Oklahoma. As a representative she has to check her beliefs at the door, and understand what the people she represents believe in. That's part of the oath. Yes she has an the First Amendment to speak what she likes, but when she speaks out on a public forum using her position and title then that's when there is an issue, and the apology is warranted.
Imagine if your doctor refused to treat you because of your race, gender, or sexual orientation. Yes it's his First Amendment right to believe and say what he wants, but on the job you've taken an oath to treat all and do no harm, just like Represantative Kern took the oath to oversee all her people and not just those she approves of.

I emailed Mrs. Kern yesterday and have not received a response. I agree with the people that say she is exercising her right of freedom of speech; however, she is forgetting the separation of Church and State and I don't think she should be able to pass legislation based around her religious beliefs. Hey Perez, last I checked in this country we had freedom of speech. What she said was taken completely out of context! Anytime someone says something you don't like, you have to go running like a little baby to your momma aka the media. You CAN'T force someone to believe something. Here's the thing. She's more than welcome to hate anyone she wants. She's more than welcome to discuss that with whomever she pleases.
But when you take advantage of your freedom of speech- you have to accept the backlash. Especially if the conversation you're having is in the a political forum.
There will always be people who hate- there will always be something to get them on their soapboxes. It's our responsibility to make sure they know we're listening and we disagree.
