STDs rife among US teenage girls
One in four teenage girls in the United States has a sexually-transmitted disease, a study has indicated.
The study, by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found an even higher prevalence of STDs among black girls.
Researchers analysed data from a nationally representative sample of 838 US girls aged 14 to 19.
A virus that causes cervical cancer - HPV - was the most common, followed by chlamydia, trichomoniasis and herpes.
The CDC says the study is the first in its kind to examine the prevalence of common sexually transmitted diseases among adolescent girls.
It found that nearly half of the African-American girls surveyed had at least one STD, while the rate was 20% among white and Mexican-American teenagers.
Human papillomavirus, or HPV, affected 18% of the girls surveyed, chlamydia 4%, trichomoniasis 2.5%, and herpes simplex virus 2%.
Screening recommended
The CDC's Devin Fenton said it was a serious issue because the diseases could lead to infertility and cervical cancer.
"Screening, vaccination and other prevention strategies for sexually active women are among our highest public health priorities," he said.
The CDC is recommending annual chlamydia screening for all sexually active women under 25, and HPV vaccines for girls aged 11 to 12, followed by booster injections.
John Douglas, the CDC's head of STD prevention, says screenings are underused because teenagers often do not think they are at risk.
Analysts say some doctors are also reluctant to discuss screening with teenage patients because of confidentiality concerns, knowing parents would have to be told of the results.

I'm a medical student, and I have to agree with some of the other posts. Doctors are actually moving away from calling HPV an STD; it's so common that it's more a sign of sexual contact in general. You don't have to have sex, just skin-to-skin contact (ie condoms DON'T always protect you from HPV). The lifetime risk of contacting HPV is somewhere between 50-80%. There are about 80 strains of HPV, causing anything from common warts on your hands, plantar warts on your feet, and the much talked about cervical cancer. Although it's uncommon, MEN can get penile cancer from at least one of the strains that cause cervical and vulvar cancer in women (lovely right?). Men are more at risk of cancer if they are immunocompromised (ie transplant recipients, cancer patients, and people with HIV/AIDS). Sooo ladies, the moral of the story is get your Guardasil shot to prevent the most carcinogenic forms of HPV before you pick them up to protect yourself and your future contacts. Hopefully the vaccine will soon be approved for boys/men (it's in trials now in Europe). Perez, if you ever need a little medical knowledge let me know

I watched the news report and it pissed me off to no end - where the hell do they ('the news') get off, reporting that girls get STD's and not one mention of the boys spreading diseases?!!!! Thing is…the majority of sexually active people have a strain of HPV that causes no symptoms at all and can go away on its own. So nearly everyone who has sex gets an STD of some kind.

ANY knowledgable researcher would tell you that there are many questions that come with this study. For example, what is the ratio of ethnicity, where was the study located, etc. IT IS IRRESPONSIBLE OF YOU OR ANYONE ELSE to report this study, or any other study, without breaking it down. The common folk don't truly understand how studies work, because if it reflective of the population you would know that the population is not fifty percent African American and what about the other ethnicities? Some don't participate for cultural reasons. Get a clue and give me a break!

As other posters have said, what a stupid and blatantly offensive post to make. Young girls are more at RISK for getting STI's because women are in general, due to our anatomy. Who is spreading these STI's just as much? Men!! There is not causal relationship with gender, rather, blame it on inadequate sex education and support. How do you feel about syphilis rates climbing among gay men? STI's are a big problem for a majority of the population, deal with it, don't sibngle out people. It comes off as uneducated, and just plain sexist.
