STDs rife among US teenage girls
One in four teenage girls in the United States has a sexually-transmitted disease, a study has indicated.
The study, by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found an even higher prevalence of STDs among black girls.
Researchers analysed data from a nationally representative sample of 838 US girls aged 14 to 19.
A virus that causes cervical cancer - HPV - was the most common, followed by chlamydia, trichomoniasis and herpes.
The CDC says the study is the first in its kind to examine the prevalence of common sexually transmitted diseases among adolescent girls.
It found that nearly half of the African-American girls surveyed had at least one STD, while the rate was 20% among white and Mexican-American teenagers.
Human papillomavirus, or HPV, affected 18% of the girls surveyed, chlamydia 4%, trichomoniasis 2.5%, and herpes simplex virus 2%.
Screening recommended
The CDC's Devin Fenton said it was a serious issue because the diseases could lead to infertility and cervical cancer.
"Screening, vaccination and other prevention strategies for sexually active women are among our highest public health priorities," he said.
The CDC is recommending annual chlamydia screening for all sexually active women under 25, and HPV vaccines for girls aged 11 to 12, followed by booster injections.
John Douglas, the CDC's head of STD prevention, says screenings are underused because teenagers often do not think they are at risk.
Analysts say some doctors are also reluctant to discuss screening with teenage patients because of confidentiality concerns, knowing parents would have to be told of the results.

There is no a way to test guys for HPV. But there was a survey released stating that nearly 90% of sexually active guys have HPV.

health care facilities are not required to tell parent's of children's sexually transmitted diseases (which according to new articles are being referred to as sexually transmitted infections or STIs). in fact, it is the law that health care workers provide COMPLETE confidentiality to teens who seek screening or treatment for sexually transmitted infections. also, teens from the age of 12 on (sad, i know) have the ability to receive contraceptives and protection from clinics for free and without any consent from parents/guardians. this is true for the state of CA, i don't know about other states. but it is important for the correct information to be out there, and for teens to know that they can privately seel screening/treatment. WHICH THEY SHOULD.
Pretty much everyone will eventually have a somewhat silent version of HPV. The kind that causes cervical cancer. They are not necessarily skanks, because it really is the men spreading it. There is no way to test for this version of HPV in men. I know, because I have it and I have only been with three guys, two of which I was with for well over a year. Sometimes things just don't work out, yanno? There are a lot of skanks, that's for sure, but mostly everyone has HPV, even if they don't know yet. It can take a long time to turn up in women. This type of HPV has no symptoms, whatsoever (other than a more likeliness of cervical cancer) unlike some which cause genital warts. Just thought I'd throw that out there!

There is currently no HPV screening test for guys to reveal whether or not they have HPV. Men are going around giving it to women because they don't know they have it in the first place. To reiterate what others have said, HPV is incredibly common. Most people have it. There is no way of knowing unless you have an abnormality on your pap test. Condoms do not guarantee protection. Promiscuity and STDs are not necessarily correlated. You should not label females with STDs as "skanks".

Its awful and totally backwards to put this message out there like this. Many girls have HPV and its terrible to call them skanks (guys too of course). HPV can easily be transmitted even when a condom is used. you can contract it and not know about it and transfer it. It is difficult to test guys for HPV so often they dont even know they have it and they can pass it on to girls who pass it on and on etc. You may have only slept with one person and used a condom and you still could get HPV. There are many kinds and only a few are very serious. some reports say that 80% of sexual active women contract HPV some time in their life and many dont even realize it and often it goes away over time.
Name calling and guilt tripping does not help educate ppl about STDs, it only increases secrecy and taboo surrounding STDs. Having an STD doesnt make you a skank.

"Skanks" is a relatively harsh term. You have no idea if these young girls have gotten their STDs from having been raped or having had sex willingly–which they probably haven't (been willing), if they are that young. Usually girls this age have sex to gain acceptance and feel "loved"–not achieve sexual pleasure.

Wow…what a coincidence that the Centers for Disease Control would release a study of this nature while at the same time Gardasil ads are popping up everywhere–in magazines, on billboards, on the radio, television…there's big bucks to be made if the CDC and Gardasil can convince the parents of millions of teenage girls that this vaccine is a neccesity. Or…you know…we could teach "sex ed" instead of abstinence programs…or you know…we could talk to our kids about safe sex…yep, that includes our sons who are the carrier of this virus…who give this virus to young women. Why aren't we talking about vaccinating them too I wonder? Certain strains of the HPV virus can lead to rectal cancer…also, some strains are the cause of regular old warts…so these statistics are pretty damn misleading…

guys dont get hpv, or at least have no symptons and no harmful outcomes, not to mention there is no test for boys since it is a harmless for them. men are only carriers…since hpv is the most common, it just works out that 100% more of the people that have it are female and therefore the ratio tips in that way
