STDs rife among US teenage girls
One in four teenage girls in the United States has a sexually-transmitted disease, a study has indicated.
The study, by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found an even higher prevalence of STDs among black girls.
Researchers analysed data from a nationally representative sample of 838 US girls aged 14 to 19.
A virus that causes cervical cancer - HPV - was the most common, followed by chlamydia, trichomoniasis and herpes.
The CDC says the study is the first in its kind to examine the prevalence of common sexually transmitted diseases among adolescent girls.
It found that nearly half of the African-American girls surveyed had at least one STD, while the rate was 20% among white and Mexican-American teenagers.
Human papillomavirus, or HPV, affected 18% of the girls surveyed, chlamydia 4%, trichomoniasis 2.5%, and herpes simplex virus 2%.
Screening recommended
The CDC's Devin Fenton said it was a serious issue because the diseases could lead to infertility and cervical cancer.
"Screening, vaccination and other prevention strategies for sexually active women are among our highest public health priorities," he said.
The CDC is recommending annual chlamydia screening for all sexually active women under 25, and HPV vaccines for girls aged 11 to 12, followed by booster injections.
John Douglas, the CDC's head of STD prevention, says screenings are underused because teenagers often do not think they are at risk.
Analysts say some doctors are also reluctant to discuss screening with teenage patients because of confidentiality concerns, knowing parents would have to be told of the results.

Not only teens but every sexually active person in general better wake up to the fact that even condoms won't protect you from certain STD's like genital herpes and human papilloma virus (HPV…from the "One Less commercials") All of these STD viruses live on the skin of the genitals, inner thighs and lower stomach…so even if you use a condom its enough for only skin on skin contact to happen to become infected and once you get something like HPV it makes the percentages of getting infected with HIV higher. HPV is the #1 STD in the Usa folks!

STD's are a common reality for young women and men today. They are unfortunate however, people need to live and deal. STD's are considered gross and slutty. The thing is THEY ARE COMMON!! A lot of people get them; it doesn't matter how you got it. You just do. I remember 1 time I was kicked out of someone's house because I had Herpes. I felt like killing myself. Did I ask for herpes, did I slut around to get it? The answer is No! I did everything they told me to do in sex ed class and I still got that special present. Does it make me a slut? Does it make me a Lepar? The answer is NO! The facts are that 1 in 5 people have genital herpes, 1 in 3 people have cold sores that can be transferred through oral sex. I firmly believe that if a person who has herpes knows their body and the signs and symptoms for outbreaks they can lead a very healthy sex life. Because I have herpes does not mean I have a horrible disease. I have an annoying skin condition that apears as a bumb for 5 days once a year. The only thing that sux about herpes is the AWFUL STIGMA! The one that people like TYRA BANKS paints. This stigma helps spread the virus because people are forced to become dishonest and scared. Instead of laying down the facts in a study to sell the drug gardasil that onley prevents against a few of the 20 different strains of HPV, they do a study about young people coping and living with STD's.

Just because you don't go "all the way" does not mean that you are safe from STDs. You can get genital herpes from oral sex if your partner has a history of HSV1 on his/her lips–or even if they don't know they have the virus. A sore does not have to be present. You can still catch herpes even in the absence of any visible lip lesions. You can also get HPV from non-sexual exposure. You need an updated sexual education, girlfriend! Precious few of us are actually "safe."

Herpes can show up in areas not covered by a condom, dumbass. Such as the upper thighs, and even the anal area. Yeah, you can catch that with skin-to-skin contact. Sorry dude, it's true. A barrier is just that—a barrier. It covers a particular area. But STDs are not always confined to that particular area. If you are a guy wearing a condom having sex with a woman who has a herpes outbreak on her "taint" you are NOT—I repeat NOT covered by any barrier. 80% of females have HPV, and most strains do absolutely f-all to you. You have a 0.2% chance of getting an HPV type that causes cervical cancer, but they want you to believe it's a much greater risk so you'll spend your $350. DON'T LET THEM GET TO YOU, KNOW THE TRUTH.
