STDs rife among US teenage girls
One in four teenage girls in the United States has a sexually-transmitted disease, a study has indicated.
The study, by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found an even higher prevalence of STDs among black girls.
Researchers analysed data from a nationally representative sample of 838 US girls aged 14 to 19.
A virus that causes cervical cancer - HPV - was the most common, followed by chlamydia, trichomoniasis and herpes.
The CDC says the study is the first in its kind to examine the prevalence of common sexually transmitted diseases among adolescent girls.
It found that nearly half of the African-American girls surveyed had at least one STD, while the rate was 20% among white and Mexican-American teenagers.
Human papillomavirus, or HPV, affected 18% of the girls surveyed, chlamydia 4%, trichomoniasis 2.5%, and herpes simplex virus 2%.
Screening recommended
The CDC's Devin Fenton said it was a serious issue because the diseases could lead to infertility and cervical cancer.
"Screening, vaccination and other prevention strategies for sexually active women are among our highest public health priorities," he said.
The CDC is recommending annual chlamydia screening for all sexually active women under 25, and HPV vaccines for girls aged 11 to 12, followed by booster injections.
John Douglas, the CDC's head of STD prevention, says screenings are underused because teenagers often do not think they are at risk.
Analysts say some doctors are also reluctant to discuss screening with teenage patients because of confidentiality concerns, knowing parents would have to be told of the results.

The correct name is STIs, not STDs. To call young ladies skanks because they have been infected with a sexually transmited infection is just not right or fair. What would you call the guys that are infecting the many young teen females that are not promiscuous? First off teenage girls aren't the only one's with STD's. The problem is that there is no test for males who may or may not have HPV. They are only carriers of the disease. There are also hundreds of strains of HPV and most likely in your lifetime you will get one of those. The percent is actually 85% of people will get it. Hopefully it won't be one of the 3 strains that cause cancer. The fact of the matter is that all teenagers should get vaccinated b/c it's not just spread through sex. It's skin contact which means a lil grinding even through your undies can spread HPV…OR HOW ABOUT SHARING A BATHING SUIT - How many teenagers do that? A lot. Lets protect our kids and get them vaccinated. Let's not allow one mistake to ruin their lives.

It's a horrible statistic, it makes me sick that kids are not fully learning about sex and its consequences (when not being safe) early on. But I have to agree that you should put male statistics too.
Oh and as far as blaming it on guys, yes many guys are slutty, but females are just as likely to give an STD. For example, herpes, if you've got a coldsore and give a BJ, there is a very likely chance he'll get it. This is what happened to one of my guy friends. Just to show how ignorant teenagers are. The article says 1 out of every 3 teenage girls has STD. That does not mean that every 1 out of every 3 boys has STD because in many cases teenage girls have sex with older guys many who may well be over the age of 20.
The sad part about the statistics is that 48 percent of black teenage girls have STD but only 22 percent white and mexican american
