STDs rife among US teenage girls
One in four teenage girls in the United States has a sexually-transmitted disease, a study has indicated.
The study, by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found an even higher prevalence of STDs among black girls.
Researchers analysed data from a nationally representative sample of 838 US girls aged 14 to 19.
A virus that causes cervical cancer - HPV - was the most common, followed by chlamydia, trichomoniasis and herpes.
The CDC says the study is the first in its kind to examine the prevalence of common sexually transmitted diseases among adolescent girls.
It found that nearly half of the African-American girls surveyed had at least one STD, while the rate was 20% among white and Mexican-American teenagers.
Human papillomavirus, or HPV, affected 18% of the girls surveyed, chlamydia 4%, trichomoniasis 2.5%, and herpes simplex virus 2%.
Screening recommended
The CDC's Devin Fenton said it was a serious issue because the diseases could lead to infertility and cervical cancer.
"Screening, vaccination and other prevention strategies for sexually active women are among our highest public health priorities," he said.
The CDC is recommending annual chlamydia screening for all sexually active women under 25, and HPV vaccines for girls aged 11 to 12, followed by booster injections.
John Douglas, the CDC's head of STD prevention, says screenings are underused because teenagers often do not think they are at risk.
Analysts say some doctors are also reluctant to discuss screening with teenage patients because of confidentiality concerns, knowing parents would have to be told of the results.

…kay, well it's the "skanks" that catch it from somebody…maybe you should think about that…plus, a lot of STDs are spread when there's no sign of infection, and a condom doesn't always protect…they're spread by skin-to-skin contact…did you know that when you go get "tested" they don't test you for herpes? They only test when there's an outbreak…so basically, the only way you know you have it, is when you see an outbreak…and they can be spread when there is no outbreak…through "viral shedding"…maybe if people became more educated on these issues, all the stigmas will disappear…and more importantly, the spread of STI (infections, not "diseases") will lessen…

Perez, you're awesome and I really enjoy your blog but I didn't think it was cool stating, "We're filled with skanks!" Guys get STDs, too. When I was in a long term relationship, for several years mind you, my bf at that time slept with a "skank" behind my back and gave me chlamydia. I didn't find out till my annual GYN visit months later. I thank God everyday for it being found early and not affecting me for the long run. There are hundreds of studies about this, and a popular one says that 1 in 2 PEOPLE will get an STD before age 25. If you're looking for shock value, this statistic would work better; but if you're looking to make every teenage girl a presumable slut, then the one you chose to post works. Perez, stop being such a mysoginist.

Y'know, this just pisses me off. I'm sad that so many young women in America in 2008 are not protecting themselves, but why do they get blamed and labelled as "skanks"?
