Why's It Gotta Be So Black and White???

Filed under: Barack Obama > Hillary Clinton

wennbarackhill__opt11.jpg

Barack Obama's spiritual advisor, Jeremiah White, has gone on a very racially charged attack against Hillary Clinton.

Click here to watch Jeremiah's rant.

Why's it gotta be about race????

Why's it gotta be about gender????

Why can't we just vote for who we think is the best and most qualified leader????

All of the comments that are made everyday about race boil down to one vital point…slavery had a lasting negative impact on the societal relations in this country. That's why we can't all get along. This country is run by white people. And Christians. And Men. And able-bodied individuals. And heterosexuals. And all kinds of other people who were born into privilege that they have such a hard time accepting. Did you ask to be born into privilege? No. Is it your responsibility to end discrimination against the people who were not born into privilege by stopping the cycle of hatred. Hell yes it is. Because it makes a difference when somebody with privilege who has nothing to gain takes up for someone that they do not identify with. If a black man calls out racism, everybody says, "It's just that black man trying to play the race card." If a white man points to racism against blacks, other white people listen. If that's not power and privilege above others, I don't know what is.

Things I find funny… The ones that are saying:

"What did the 'preacher' say that was so bad?" (The "preacher" is ignoring the struggles of all women in the United States that have suffered with discrimination and continue to do so today… The "preacher" is ignoring all of the work the Clintons have done to benefit the black community.)

"Oh yeah.. I'm sure Hillary has some skeletons in her closet because she won't release her tax returns etc." (Really? You don't think that the government would be frothing at the mouth if there were some illegal dealings they could charge the Clintons with?)

I think the majority of black people in the United States should be as ashamed of this man's speech in the same manner the majority of white people would be ashamed of a speech made by a KKK member. There is NO justifying his speech because it was intended to divide and insult us. Plain and Simple.

I think the minute Obama decided he was running for a major political office outside the "walls" of Chicago, he decided to "distance" himself from his longtime friend and preacher. How convenient.

SOUNDS LIKE HE IS BLAMING HILARY FOR BEING BORN WHITE. THAT WAS NOT IN HER CONTROL, JUST LIKE IT WAS NOT IN THE CONTROL OF PEOPLE WHO WERE BORN BLACK.
    :)
IT IS NOT WHITE PEOPLE THAT ARE KEEPING BLACK PEOPLE DOWN, IT IS THE BLACK LEADERS THAT ARE KEEPING BLACK PEOPLE DOWN. PLEASE, IF YOU ARE A BLACK PERSON, DENOUNCE THIS KIND OF PITIFUL PREACHING.

    909

Whether you are a black man or a white woman, you still have problems different than a white man. And white men have problems too! Everyone has some difficulty in their life, even rich people. But to act like a white woman can just waltz through life and never have problems or difficulties is just naive. Sexism and racism exist. Someday hopefully it won't, but until then, this guy shouldn't be preaching how easy it is for Hillary until he's walked a mile in her mocassins (so to speak!)

    910

perez, tell me this : why do you buy into the idea that latinos and blacks are at eachother's throats? I've been reading your site for a few years and you're kind of racist towards the black community. i don't care if you support hillary clinton, and obvs. you have the right to post whatever you feel, but you didn't say anything about the clinton camp's racist (veiled or otherwise) attacks on Obama. See : Geraldine Ferraro?!? Hillary didn't denounce those statements, but I think Obama's campaign is doing a much better job of distancing himself from potshots on race or gender. I'm a feminist, and I believe that there's been a lot of dirty tricks pulled on Clinton because she's a woman, but let's get some objectivity here….white privilege is a tremendous issue, and people should be able to talk about their unique experiences with it.

This is an interesting discussion, and I have read ALMOST every post to see how many people use it to spew out their racism, and wouldn't you know it, a majority is people of color still pissed about something that OUR generation DID NOT do. It is proven that black people are voting for color, Oprah is a prime perfect example. What happened to Women are equal?

  21. Wow Cont... says – reply to this

    921

Can you imagine what is going to happen if Obama gets in, you think the "Rev Jesse Jackson" has a mouth on him now? Now, Wright!! I sat next to many black people in school, they were given the same respect, assignments, exams, etc as me and everyone else, however a majority chose the wrong paths, why are we "white" people to pay for that? You are not seeing the fact that you do this to yourselves. You guys are giving yourselves (not all of you mind you) the reputation you have yet anyone who is white has to pay for it. Women have come along way from being to bred to work in the kitchen and raise the children, because we chose to count as something more, and now we're not going to be able to prove that because everyone who is black thinks that Obama is the best choice clearly because of his skin color, Well they are right about the fact he will help only them, considering he hasn't mentioned his white roots at all. Is he that ashamed? Think about it 4 years of constant racism in the white house, and this is because non of you guys can let go of something we had no control over. This is 2008 people, grow the fuck up. Everyone chooses their own paths. If he does get in, I hope he proves everyone wrong and runs the country equally, but I fail to see the reality in that.

It is really sad this has turned into that type of issue, I listen to a local talk radio station and the whole Obama/Hilary debate circled around race. The main issue should be who is the better candidate to clean up Bush's mess and get our nation on track, but with all the ignorant minds that will be voting who knows what will happen.

My other feeling is we are ONE NATION who has been betrayed by our president and we need to find the next best person who will help lead us in the right direction. Why does is matter who is black, white, hispanic, chinese, man, women? We all need to come together and get past this racial issue! And it is always a white puting down the black, well I can say from many personal experiences race isnt just white against black, it goes all different directions. This is coming from a young white lady who is the least bit racist, is see people for people not their color, but believe me, living in Miami I delt with many racisms towards m.

Is America on crack how is it that Obama and his racist pastor for the last 20 years even a candidate for President, I feel like I'm living in a nightmare. The problem is that the Dumbocrat party is 35 percent black, 25 percent hispanic and the rest white, dived by liberal whites that hate America and middle class whites, now the reason Obama's even still in this election is because of the liberal media that portrays him has something he isn't and treats him as some black savior of America ( I don't know why blacks don't go and save Africa since it's such a hell hole) back to my point, you have the liberals and the blacks who are voting for Obama and some hispanic , but why he can't close the deal is because middle class whites and most hispanics know he is a con man selling a dream. Obama's all about unity and transcending race, but then you watch a sermon from his pastor and mentor of the last 20 years and you realize Obama's full of shit and America's liberals are going destroy this country one way or another if the rest of America doesn't wake up. But then again this is the Dumbocrat primary and in the general election Obama's toast when the actual thinking American's vote.

    933

Thanks for posting Perez - this is not getting a lot of run time on CNN or CNBC - they are showing the really horrible clips where he said "God Da** America" which is the basis for how Michele Obama feels about America. This came out last year and it was glossed over; Obama thought that people were okay with it but they really weren't listening. An American President cannot have view like this. Wright clearly doesn't have any empathy for what women have gone through and continue to go through. He doesn't have any empathy for poor or middle class white Americans who struggle and are called "Archie Bunkers" by the obama campaign. He doesn't have any empathy for Latinos, Asian Americans, Native Americans - Did you know that the Hispanic community is getting paid WAY less than any minority community - even women? I'm sure Wright wouldn't even address any other minority community let alone care about it. Obama's ideas have been shaped/formed by this bigot. This bigot is part of his campaign team - he's an adivsor for God's sake! He helped incite the rage against President Bill Clinton in SC; he's helping to play the race card against Hillary and all the other bad white people. He's making sure it works. Can you image a Presidency with this guy and his advisor, Wright? We want someone who cares about ALL people!

Why is it that a black man can play a race card and get the response in the media as oh well he played the race card
but the white women played the race card in a less defamatory way and she was crucified by the media. what is fair and balanced about that our is it just another case of affirmative action that favors only one race in the media and
america.the preacher looks white on the tv he must have a BI-RACIAL past and so does obama he doesn't look like a black man either not the black men I see daily gotta have some white legacy their but in denial of their past. so technichally it is not a black white issue

This is one of the most offensive things I have seen this year, so far.
OBAMA was an adult when he picked this church and this pastor — he can't claim that his parents raised him here. The fact that he chose to remain a member is this church for so long with such a HATE-MONGERING PASTOR is BEYOND ME!

Christian Pastors are supposed to peach forgiveness, compassion, love, and peace, not this ridiculous garbage. Barack OBAMA has LOST MY VOTE.
    Sorry, Barack.

I agree Perez, we should vote for who is the strongest leader. I really don't think this preacher was in the wrong… I don't agree with all of his word-choices, but he speaks a lot of truth. And even what he did say offends anyone, remember that he is not Barack and doesn't necessarily speak Barack's opinion… in Barack's debates and interviews, he has been trying to shy away from race issues and focus on the important issues of the campaign… its unfortunate that people don't know the truth about Barack: how open-minded, loving, and caring he is. And I don't think there is anything wrong with his church or him being proud of where they come from and what they have overcome… strength comes with adversity and the preacher makes an excellent point- Barack has gone through tremendous adversity and I, for one, would like to have a President that knows hardships and adversity and resiliency… unfortunately, it is apparently clear that Hilary does not even know what the word means… she has led a privileged life and can't even begin to understand true hardship. I say we vote for a president who is real, honest, and strong.

  42. shawn says – reply to this

    942

First - Jeremiah Wright is NOT Barack's spiritual advisor.
Second - This clip is taken out of context. The context is an African American pastor relating to the experiences of his largely (but not exclusively) African American congregation. His point is that people who are outside of the mainstream should be encouraged that God views them as equal to all others. The use of Barack and Hillary only illustrates his point. That goes for Latinos, Asians and Native Americans too.
Third - Perez you are clearly biased and you are losing fans daily. Stick to entertainment - leave the reporting on politics to those who are more fair minded.

After his wife's horrible anti-American comments and seeing his mentor/pastor/spiritual advisor/basis for speeches and books rant and rave in a hateful and racist manner, I really hope the veil has been lifted and the blinders taken off. Obama speaks of hope and change, but do you really believe he means hope and change for ALL Americans?? Or is it actually hope and change for BLACK Americans? Knowing what we know of the two people closest to him, who've had the longest relationship with him, do you still believe his words are meant to include anyone but black people? Why would anyone who's not black be included, non-blacks are the enemy don't forget.

Re: shawn – you're either ignorant of hoping the rest of us are. that horrible excuse for a pastor has been spewing his hateful, racist views from that pulpit for 36 years. after 9/11 he gave a "sermon" telling his congregants how the terrorist attack was God's punishment on white people for their opression of blacks. he's given numerous sermons on why blacks should sing "God damn America" instead of God bless America. He's racist, hateful, and anti-American and this is the leader of the church Obama claims "speaks to him" on a spiritual level. and Obama himself has claimed this man as friend, mentor, pastor, spiritual advisor, and the inspiration for many speeches and his second book. I was really waiting for someone to try to say this clip was taken out of context. Denying that anyone except a black man has ever been discriminated against, claiming jesus was a poor black man, and saying he loves white people because jesus taught him to love his enemies (just to name a few of the completely offensive things he said in that 3 minute clip) will never have a context that makes then not racist and hateful.

Re: Shannon – what adversity is that? yes, his bio father left, but he was raised in a 2 person household, by college educated parents, he attended prep school, not public school, and has degrees from two ivy league colleges. someone paid for all of that, so the poverty thing is out the window, i grew up middle class and had to turn down an ivy league education in favor of IU because there was no way to pay for it and i'm going to be paying for the education i did get for many years to come. lower and middle class families can't afford to send their children to prep schools and ivy league universities. he never lived in a ghetto, so he doesn't have that experience either. the only adversity he can legitimately claim is having black skin, and that in and of itself is not adversity. being poor, having no family, living in ghettos, not having the means for education, being physically or mentally challanged, THOSE are adverse circumstances. his might have been nontraditional, but they weren't adverse.

I'm very sorry for you, because as evidenced by your comments, you're just as bad (and sad) as those "…ignorant arrognant fat ass americans" you hate so much. You must really have an awful, unhappy life to be so angry at an entire country of people you have never met and don't know anything about. Pehaps you should see a therapist.

I know I'm late with this, but will feel better after I write it. So Obama has been going to this same church for the past 20 years. The reverend there is a CERTIFIABLE mad man who needs medication RIGHT NOW. I mean: Unbelievable! So put that aside. Does Obama and wife take their little children to that church to listen to the garbage coming out of rev's mouth? Suppose Obama now, after the ill will his MENTOR has brought forth, announces that he denounces the crazy, angry guy and/or says he does not agree with what pastorman has been saying…I mean: This Wright guy didn't just come up with this garbage! He must have been preaching this horror all the years B. Hussein Obama has been attending that church! Can this not be pointed out aggressively so that we as a nation stop fainting and wanting B. Hussein Obama to be our president? I am really scared at the possibility…or is America, indeed, taking notice and weighing the benefits versus the risks and I haven't read or heard yet about it? This is really important!! This is unprecedented! How does B. Hussein say to us: "I've been listening to my pastor and mentor for the past 20 years, but now I suddenly realize he has been wrong in his comments." Oh boy.

Re: becky – well, Obama hasn't even attempted to denounce this man and in fact has had him with him for guidence and counsel throughout the campaign. but the media outlets, other than perez, haven't the balls to even air this garbage. the news media, in case anyone hasn't realized this, is completely pro-obama…and it's either because they're afraid of being labeled racist or they've actually drunk the kool-aid, hard to tell. either way, they only portray obama in the most positive terms and try really hard to cover up any negative associations and those that manage to break through to the public, they downplay and spin faster and better than obama's own campaign people. and if that doesn't work, they try the old slight of hand, trying to force our attention to something else, usually something anti-hillary. and if all else fails, they claim that uncovering these basic truths about obama is a "smear campaign" and "fear tactics" by the clinton campaign. because, as wright said, whites ARE the enemy (oh, and by the way, "white" apparently includes hispanics/latinos, asians, native americans, europeans, and anyone else not black because you know none of us have a heritage or culture or ancestry to be proud of).

We had every disadvantage, yet we managed to rise above it. We've actually experienced true adveristy in our lives. give me a freaking break. black people in America today have every advantage.

You hit the nail on the head. There is nothing worse than being "po' white folk." There is no help if you're lower middle class white. You do not get the benefits of being a minority, and you have to work twice as hard, three times as hard and still come out behind of the privileged white folk and behind of the freebie-getting minorities…
I know cuz my boyfriend is white middle class. His family would not/could not pay for his education. He went to NYU and got some scholarship money, but he also got loans and now struggles to pay it back.
At his work, people less or equally deserving get double his salary because they are minorities…. What else can it be? He's a superstar at work, extremely intelligent, BUT WHITE.

yes, you did try and correct people until i pointed that out. What i find uneducated is that you are trying to argue with people over something you seem to know little about. Hilary has done many things whether you want to admit it or not. That is your choice. I would ask you what Obama has done but i already have my opinion…which would be he has done NOTHING but try and preach for change without taking any action. If you want to know all the things Hilary has done over the years use your common sense and look it up on the internet, read a book about her, or listen to the news. Or will that bore you seeing how you will not have anyone to bash. The whole point in me getting into this arguement with you is because you were trying to correct those you disagreed with, call them names, and act as if you knew everything. And your whole "your pulling a Hilary" is plain stupid. I could say your pulling an Obama by talking about things you seem to know nothing about. Maybe instead of posting comments every five minutes you should read a book. so lord you go ahead and speak…though you seem to speak too much.

Re: clueuin – where exactly did you get your definition of racism? the DICTIONARY defines racism as: "1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. 2. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races." It says nothing about socio-economic status, because anyone can hate, no matter who they are and what they may or may not have. However, as Barack Obama's personal net worth has been estimated at about $1.3 million, I'd say even by your definition, he and his wife have all the qualifications for being racist. And jeremiah Wright, having been the pastor of a church with a congregation of around 10,000 people would also have the financial means you seem to think are necessary to be racist. However, I'm still confused as to where exactly you got your definition for racism…

    997

n a fiery sermon taped and available on DVD, Barack Obama’s longtime pastor and spiritual adviser can be seen and heard saying three times: “God damn America.”

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., in his taped sermons, also questioned America’s role in the spread of the AIDS virus and suggested that the United States bore some responsibility for the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Confronting the content of some of Wright’s sermons, parts of which have been aired this week on FOX News, the Obama campaign is continuing to distance itself from the pastor’s rhetoric. But it is stopping short of a full repudiation.

Wright’s supporters say his Afro-centric sermons accurately portray black America, and they contend his sermons are widely studied by theologians. But critics are now calling attention to some of his words from the pulpit.

The pastor delivered his final sermon last month and retired as leader of Trinity United Church in Chicago. Obama has attended the church for 20 years and calls Wright his spiritual adviser.

In a fiery sermon in April 2003, Wright said: “The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes three-strike laws and wants them to sing God Bless America.

    “No! No No!

“God damn America … for killing innocent people.

“God damn America for threatening citizens as less than humans.

“God damn America as long as she tries to act like she is God and supreme.”

    998

In DVD copies of his sermons available for purchase, Wright can also be seen questioning America’s role in the spreading of the HIV virus that leads to AIDS. In another speech, made in the days after 9/11, he suggested that American foreign policy invited the terror attacks.

“We bombed Hiroshima. We bombed Nagasaki. And we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon and we never batted an eye,” Wright said.

“We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because of stuff we have done overseas is now brought back into our own backyard. America is chickens coming home to roost.”

  99. well well well cont.... says – reply to this

    999

The pastor also said: “The government lied about inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color. The government lied.”

Late Thursday, the Obama campaign said it has distanced itself from certain comments made by the pastor. But it did not fully repudiate Wright himself — as some critics have called for.

“Senator Obama has said before that he profoundly disagrees with some of the statements and positions of Reverend Wright, who has preached his last sermon as pastor at the church,” Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said. “Senator Obama deplores divisive statements whether they come from his supporters, the supporters of his opponent, talk radio, or anywhere else.”

Last year, Obama rescinded an invitation to Wright to deliver the invocation at his announcement that he was running for president. He also issued a statement saying personal attacks have no place in politics after Wright delivered an attack on Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton.

  100. well well well cont...... says – reply to this

    1000

But Obama’s longtime relationship with Wright is continuing to spark controversy.

“This is not just someone that Barack Obama has a casual relationship with,” said Tom Bevan, executive editor of RealClearPolitics.com. He noted that Wright married Barack and Michelle Obama, and Wright’s words were the inspiration for the title of Obama’s book, “The Audacity of Hope.”

“Barack Obama has not out and out distanced himself from all of these comments … ,” said Patricia Murphy, editor of CitizenJanePolitics.com. “It’s unclear if he rejects all of these statements. I would assume that he does, but I think he is going to be pushed where he needs to come out and fully explain his relationship with his pastor.”

Some of Wright’s statements have raised eyebrows at a time the Internal Revenue Service is scrutinizing tax-exempt religious organizations for alleged violations of rules barring them from participating in political campaigns.

Prior to his retirement last month, Wright delivered commentary from the pulpit in which he praised Obama, as well as remarks focusing on the racial divide between Obama and Clinton.
