Inside the Sad, Bizarre World That Was the Lauren Conrad Show

Attending last night’s Lauren Conrad Collection show at L.A.'s Fashion Week felt a lot like being dropped into the middle of an episode of The Hills — potentially juicy, questionably styled, ultimately a bit plotless, and yet strangely amusing. The celebrity turnout was limited to exactly the people you’d expect from that show and its sister soap, Laguna Beach. Well, and Lisa Rinna, who would attend the opening of a mouth. Presumably Putty Lips was there as a buyer for her L.A. store, Belle Grey, because after the show we heard her waxing annoying about how quickly her store sold out of Conrad’s first line; she called the latest collection “fresh, young, innovative…and fresh.” She had one of those things correct.

But first, the gossip: We spotted L.C.’s roommate Audrina Patridge wearing a long teal dress and pots of foundation — later, when she almost ran us down in her shiny, white two-door Mercedes Benz, we couldn’t help but notice her car had a Jeannie Bueller air about it that was in sync with Audrina’s weirdly eighties-style eyeliner. Considering she was essentially there to drum up press for MTV, we found it a bit surprising that she actually had to drive herself to the venue. Call your PR person, Audrina. Surely you’ve got one.

Inside, Audrina chatted up new regular Hills cast member Lo Bosworth and ol' standby Whitney Port, who looked very tall and pretty in person. In a refreshing moment of modesty, Whitney rather endearingly chose not to walk through the special red-carpet photo-op area and seemed sort of surprised when the photographers wouldn’t let her escape so easily. The girls were seated cheek by jowl with Lauren’s ex Brody Jenner, who spent the entire show tapping his feet to the music and giving finger guns to someone seated across the runway — possibly Lauren’s other ex and maybe-current boyfriend, Stephen Colletti. And because this was very clearly an MTV joint, which requires maximum drama even at a fashion show, we also spotted L.C.’s former arch-rival and ex-girlfriend of both Brody AND Stephen (you’re following this, right?), Laguna Beach’s Kristin Cavallari. She greeted both dudes enthusiastically, wandering into the venue twenty minutes after everyone else (and twenty minutes after they were seated and the media mob had left the runway) and frantically trying to yank up her low-rise jeans to prevent any unfortunate flashing incidents. We overheard her telling a reporter that she is SO single right now, and has NO — emphasis hers — plans to return to reality television, which may effectively quash those pesky rumors that she’s appearing on The Hills. Sadly, considering the circumstances, there were no screaming confrontations, crying jags, bitch slaps, or passionate kisses.

Also absent from the venue was anyone recognizable from Lauren’s former place of employment (er, “employment”), Teen Vogue, any celebrities willing to admit they totally love The Hills, or any decent fashion. We don’t say that with (much) glee. We went into the show completely prepared to like it, to be embarrassed by liking it, and to spend the rest of the week being defensive about liking it. This did not happen. Lauren claimed the line was inspired by her recent trip to Paris, and given how obviously and ham-handedly this influence was translated into the clothes, we’re frankly surprised she didn’t style the girls with baguettes and giant wheels of Brie. Let’s just say…there were berets involved, and, overall, the collection was sadly kind of tragique. We expected a line of derivative but serviceably-adorable cocktail dresses much like what Lauren herself wears around town — you know, the type of stuff she probably bought a season ago from BCBG and loved. Instead, we got paper-thin leggings with lazy and plain triangle shirts, cheap-looking fabric more befitting a Target line than anything you’d pay boutique prices for, and a terrible color palette that would give Michael Kors an aneurysm.

We understand the desire to strike while the iron of her celebrity is hot, but, overall, the effort felt very young, in the sense that Lauren probably needs a few more years of design school before she’s ready to take on anything this ambitious. Photos do the line more favors than an up-close look — hardly anything was properly fitted, many of the dresses bunched in the back, and one model’s boobs were totally squeezing out of the top of her dress. Our greatest moment of joy was seeing Chantal, the runner-up from last cycle of America’s Next Top Model, strutting down the runway — but even that was tinged with sadness, because, seriously, the girl still cannot walk and may even have regressed since she was last under the tutelage of Miss J.

L.C.’s friends tried their best, but mostly they wore very careful non-expressions on their faces. Whitney, in particular, seemed to be holding onto her poker face like grim death, probably because she realized how savaged her friend would be if any actual fashion press had attended. When an obviously relieved Conrad finally came out for her bow, only Cavallari stood for her initially, but the others got up once they realized what was happening and the room was full of extremely polite smiles. So despite all that dramatic potential, in the end, we found ourselves aching for Spencer and Heidi to storm the fortress and cause some real shenanigans. After all, as much as we don’t look to the MTV crowd for edgy fashion inspiration, we really don’t turn to it for lessons in manners.

I'm not really fond of her fashion, but I still love her!
What did the writer expect going to the show?
Why wouldn't Lauren invite all of the people from her show?
    Duh.

I SAW PICTURES OF THE CLOTHES FROM LC's FASHION SHOW. I ONLY LIKE THAT BLACK AND WHITE DRESS, WHICH IS EITHER THE SAME OR SIMILAR TO WHAT CONRAD IS WEARING IN THE PICTURE P-COWARDLY, P-SHITTY, P-NASTY POSTED. SO BASICALLY, I HAVE TO SAY THAT HEIDI IS MORE "TALENTED" THAN LAUREN BASED ON LAUREN'S FASHION LINE AND HEIDI's SINGING. HEIDI CAN SING, OF COURSE NOT GREAT, BUT SHE CAN SING. CAN LAUREN CREATE CLOTHES? NO BECAUSE SHE SIMPLE COPIES OTHERS AND THEN PUTS A 100 DOLLAR TAG ON IT.
ANYWAY, I CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH ”THE HILLS” BECAUSE I CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH HEIDI MONTAG.

why are you commenting so in depth on ther fashion line? you either like it or you don't. however, why is that relevant? you have the worst fashion sense of anyone i have ever seen. what do you know about fabrics & fits & what 20 something girls want to wear. i saw your outfit for NY fashion week & you looked awful. you so tried too hard & you looke very jc pennys. i love fashion & don't think twice about buying louboutins a channel bag or a fabulous outfit from see by chloe. i am fortunate enough to be able to splurge when i want. however, i also love my leggings with a tunic & flats for everyday wear. i dress up so much for work that i would look to something like lauren's line to wear on casual friday or lounging around the house. she isn't designing high fashion. it everyday wear & is priced similar to ella moss, splendid, velvet & michael stars, i.e. brands you probably don't know but our on the pricey side for ready to wear. if she was more high fashion a dress would be $400+ and some of the chloe shirts run $600+. it seems like you are dissing her because her line wasn't like some of the big time designers you saw in NY. however, those lines are way to expensive to make & for the majority of the public to buy. you know what they say - jack of all trades, master of none. that is what you are going to turn into if you don't stick to blogging about celebrity gossip. i could care less about your taste in music or your horrible fashion sense.

    137

First off, this writer is fucking hilarious and brilliant! I can imagine her show, I live in LA and LA Fashion Week is a joke. Sure, there are some amazing designers here, but for the most part it is volume price goods galore. LC seems like a good girl with decent intentions but yearning for the limelight in which no one could care less about her, or the crew. Anyways, I am totally not surprised by this occurrence and I wish I could have been there to take part in witnessing failure. Perhaps Lauren should try the buying route? She obviously can dress cute, why not use her taste and this thing called the brain, instead of attempting to be creative.

I think that it is sad that everyone in Hollywood is so determined to be something that they are not. I have watched "The Hills" and, think that there is some potential (as I do in everyone)in Lauren Conrad. What is wrong with all of this is that these people are without a doubt spoiled and inconsiderate of everything else happening in the world. "They" should really take some time out and work foe themselves….before spending others(parents) hard earned(I hope) money on clothing lines that are uninspired…. things that have been recreated time and time again… Oh well

"The real question is.. "Would Lauren even wear her line??" - uh, lauren is wearing her line CONSTANTLY. she's wearing it in the above picture. you rarely see her in something that ISN'T from her line anymore, and this isn't some kind of new development. she's been sporting stuff from her line since last summer. so is it cheap, or is it expensive looking? because 99% of the time, the "expensive, preppy looking" stuff she's wearing IS from her line.

Good for her for doing something she likes and enjoys, how many of us can say that?…

  71. Caylie (pt 1) says – reply to this

    171

Yay! She finally got a new CHANEL handbag. It's about time, considering all the $$$ she has, and has been making. I even own two and I obviously don't have close to what she does. She ALWAYS carried around that damn black and white one from Jason. The black quilted one is cute. I almost got that but I have the identical one in white. It's easy to keep it clean, too, because it's leather!

OK on an ARTICLE-RELATED NOTE (lol), I'm sad to hear that her fashion show was a disaster. I truly do like her designs, and I think people are way too hard on her. Are we forgetting that she's only what, 21? 22? She's JUST starting out! And personally I buy some of her clothes on shoplaurenconrad.com…I have the Audrina dress in Ivory, the Dolly dress from the new collection in the Dolly print, I think it's called the Lexi tank (?) in blue, and then I wear the one outfit they have paired on the site….the white Jackie tube top with the black high-waisted Nic skirt and a black belt to tie it all together. And everytime I wear ANY of her clothes, esp. the Audrina dress and the Jackie/Nic combo, I ALWAYS get compliments. I know everyone says her clothes are way overpriced, but if you actually ordered it you might think differently. The quality of the clothing is HIGH-END DEPARTMENT STORE quality. It's not just some cotton dress that you could buy at Hollister. The fabric is amazing. Even better than some more expensive designer clothing items I have.

  72. Caylie (pt 2) says – reply to this

    172

Everyone just needs to leave her alone. She's a sweet girl, she's going after her dream, and her clothes are very cute. Just because the show was chaos doesn't mean she won't eventually get it all together. Give her time! She's not used to the fast-paced world of fashion yet, and especially not when it comes to her OWN show. That's a LOT of work, for ANYONE.

Why don't you get a life of your own, instead of always picking on celebs with more status than you will ever achieve. BTW….who does your hair? It's heinous! Go to the article from the NYT if you don't believe me about you stealing articles….. http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2008/03/inside_the_sad_bizarre_world_t.html?imw=Y

I'm excited for Heidi's line. I like Lauren's too, but I've only been able to afford one dress so far, and that's probably all I will get. I can bet Lauren has a LOT more say and a LOT more creative input into her designs (whether you like them or not - I don't see any reason not to? - you have to at least give her credit for that…she does seem very involved and interested in the whole process of creating a fashion line, from start to finish). Heidi…I honestly doubt she did anything more than lend her name to the designs for Anchor Blue. Maybe they showed her a few pages of clothes and she picked out the ones she liked or that she'd be most likely to wear, but that's probably as far as it went. I saw in the new US Weekly a preview of it, and I love the purple dress she's wearing. And it's only $37! I really liked the satin shorts ($30) and the $45 low-rise jeans she had on, too. She was wise to make it affordable because there's a good chance she'll do better than Lauren, now. Even though I would prefer all of Lauren's clothes and designs, they're simply not affordable enough for me to buy all the ones I like…April needs to hurry up and get here! (when Heidi's line is released). BTW, in case anyone is wondering…the clothes are featured on a page in the US Weekly with Ashlee Simpson on the front. :)

poor girl… looks like she got some clothes from forever 21… shit on them… then sent them down the run way. she needed to make a few of them a little longer because she managed to make her models seem to have huge thighs.

Atleast she tries to doing something postive for herself.she's a winner.Heidi didn't design her clothes she just put her name on it.they look the same as all the other clothes from Anchor Blue.Lauren is young and a star. And people love her.She did great
