Racism in Women's Tennis?

Larry Scott, the head of the Women's Tennis Association, issued a strong statement in response to assertions made by Richard Williams (poppa of Serena and Venus) to the international press regarding racism on the women's tour.
(A man is in charge of the women's tour????)
Scott stated, “The Tour has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to racism, and I have previously let Mr. Williams know that he should let me know if he ever had evidence of racist comments or acts in women’s professional tennis.”
While his daughters were playing earlier this month in Bangladore, India, Poppa Williams told the country's Deccan Herald, “Well, I’m black and I’m prejudiced, very prejudiced. People are prejudiced in tennis. I don’t think Venus or Serena was ever accepted by tennis. They never will be.”
He said the media treated his daughters unfairly, that it was “the worst media job that they have done on any human being in the world,” and that if he were Serena and Venus, he would have quit playing.
“But if you get some little white no-good trasher in America like Tracy Austin or Chris Evert, who cannot hit the ball, they (the media) will claim this is great,” he said.
The women's tennis head said, “Champions like Chris Evert and Tracy Austin have done so much to help build women’s tennis to where it is today, and it is regrettable that anyone would criticize them in this manner.”
A note to the two of them. Pick up the phone. Get together..talk it out. Trading statements via the press isn't helping anything.

I'm starting to think that most black people in this country suffer from Paranoid Personality Disorder or some form of schizophrenia. Here's the thing…look at their record. They will definitely be inducted into the tennis hall of fame. Whether or not you think they're "pretty", they are truly talented athletes. The biggest racists I know are black people. I once worked with a gal and she said "people like you and people like me." I didn't see it as like you and me it was supposed to be us. Venus and Serena have NEVER followed the rules in Tennis. They didn't play juniors, they play when they feel like it, they show up and disappear if and when they please, etc.

Venus was supposed to play against someone big in the semis. The match sold out. Venus knew she was too injured to play, but wanted to try. She went out on the court and couldn't keep playing. The Crowd in Indian Wells went nuts and booooed her off the court- as they were mad at her for not pulling out sooner-before the crowd bought tickets. WTA is run by wonderful people. But women's tennis is not and has never been respected by the men's tour.

I saw both Austin and Evert play back in the day and they were both absolutely AWESOME athletes. Chris Evert absolutely changed the way women's tennis was played, and she did so with class, style and not one bit of ego-driven attitude. Venus and Serena are also awesome players, and great athletes - they have both had astounding careers, made gazillions of bucks in prize money, tour dollars and endorsements, so whatever their big daddy is ranting about, I think he should take a chill pill and celebrate having two daughters who have done so well in their lives. There is racism in women"s tennis and its name is Richard Williams. He has been pulling the race card and complaining about his daughters "mistreatment" for years now. The Williams sisters have probably been treated better than most tennis players and the game gets very little in return from them. They are famous for not wanting to play each other and pulling out of matches and tournaments at the last minute. Faking injuries one week and coming out and winning a tournament the following week with no sign of injury. Yet they have continued to get support from tennis fans. Serena is my favorite player to watch when she's in shape and actually gives a shit to put in an honest effort. They are no longer dominant in the game and I think they are having issues with losing on a regular basis as opposed to winning. They are never gracious in defeat either blaming colds and injuries on their losses. Rather than give credit to the other players better overall play. They have learned to give excuses from there ignorant father. Its too bad they dont distance themselves from their dad as their mother Oracene has. You dont see her acting this way. Larry Scott is no longer going to allow the girls to just pick and choose when they want to play. Instead all players will play required events or be fined and suspended. As it should be. I suspect there is racism and sexism in professional tennis.
I admire and respect the Williams sisters for athletic talents, their pursuits of
education and careers outside of tennis. They are excellent role models for young Afro-Americans girls.
I suspect they had to player harder to get where they are, and to get those endorsements that pay better than the games themselves. The fact that
they are hetereosexual women may also have made them different in women's sports. If you are not a black person you have no right to comment on what their experiences may have been in rising to the top of their profession.
It is far too easy for white people to make supposed informed remarks on racism and people of color. What is their reference? Their experiences?

this man is an absolute idiot. of course his daughters are famous and get a great deal of accolades. what i can't believe is he said such a racist comment and there is much press on this. if the situation were reversed and a white person made those types of comments about a black person, all hell would break loose. we would see rev. al sharpton and jesse jackson taking up the opportunity to get some face time in the press. they are such media whores and aren't condemning their people for being racist as well. their prejudice sickens me. in my opinion, they are not helping their people at this point. people are wise to their hypocrisy, and they have done nothing but made fools of themselves lately.

Maybe there's just not alot of black folks that play tennis…if we follow your line of thinking then I guess the NBA is racist and prejudiced against whites.
