Racism in Women's Tennis?

Larry Scott, the head of the Women's Tennis Association, issued a strong statement in response to assertions made by Richard Williams (poppa of Serena and Venus) to the international press regarding racism on the women's tour.
(A man is in charge of the women's tour????)
Scott stated, “The Tour has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to racism, and I have previously let Mr. Williams know that he should let me know if he ever had evidence of racist comments or acts in women’s professional tennis.”
While his daughters were playing earlier this month in Bangladore, India, Poppa Williams told the country's Deccan Herald, “Well, I’m black and I’m prejudiced, very prejudiced. People are prejudiced in tennis. I don’t think Venus or Serena was ever accepted by tennis. They never will be.”
He said the media treated his daughters unfairly, that it was “the worst media job that they have done on any human being in the world,” and that if he were Serena and Venus, he would have quit playing.
“But if you get some little white no-good trasher in America like Tracy Austin or Chris Evert, who cannot hit the ball, they (the media) will claim this is great,” he said.
The women's tennis head said, “Champions like Chris Evert and Tracy Austin have done so much to help build women’s tennis to where it is today, and it is regrettable that anyone would criticize them in this manner.”
A note to the two of them. Pick up the phone. Get together..talk it out. Trading statements via the press isn't helping anything.

He is absolutely correct. No one who has followed the careers of these ladies could honestly say that they have been treated fairly. The racism that they have endured in the media and through commentators is legendary.

When I think of American tennis Serena and Venus Williams are my very first thought. The older gals were pretty cool in their day of tennis but no way a comparison to the Williams phenominon. Serena and Venus are amazing. Tennis thanks every day that America produced such a pair.
Venus and Serena are a credit to their race, whatever it is. I think it is admirable that two ugly mandrills like these can be taught to pick up a racquet and hit a tennis ball. AND, by that hideous baboon they call 'father'! Just amazing. On the other hand, even fleas can be taught to perform.

If anyone is racist, it is obviously their father. I am an avid tennis fan and the actual tennis press have been nothing but fair and reverent to these girls. They are often presented as being the best of the best. Whenever the commentators make accurate comments about how Serena or Venus screwed up in a match, which unfortunately they do occasionally and especially as of late, racism is called out as a reason for the bad press. All tennis players get negative stories written about them if they lose. Welcome to sports, sir. He should be kicked out of tennis matches…his behavior is ridiculous and detremental to the sport.

Richard Williams is just trying to get some media attention. Venus and Serena are great champions, but they definately are not the greatest. They are probably the most athletically gifted to ever play the game so far. Venus has six Grand Slams Championship. Serena has eight. Tracy Austin has two. Chris Evert has 18 Grand Slams and helped open a lot of doors for women in the sport of tennis by joining Billie Jean King and other professionals to create the WTA tour. This includes equal prize money for women in the sport, a union, health benefits and a pretty nice pension. The Williams sisters and their families have certainly benefitted from this and should count their blessings for they have many.

Re: Tennis fan – It was nice to watch them play. They took the sport to new heights, but they definitely owe their success to the women he disparaged. They would have any of the other business ventures in their life without tennis and the women who came before them. It is a shame they didn't participate more, but Williams forced that stance on them. Refusing to let them socialize with the other players and claiming they were only going to try and steal tip or mess with their head. He instilled all of that mess into their training and tournaments and now he complains for what he helped to create.
I remember when audiences could be cool towards them, but that ended when they showed the key to their success wasn't a fluke. Their father succeeded in raising tennis stars outside the normal tennis factory route. That gave the dream to millions of other kids would never thought tennis would accept them.

Serena and Venus should be thankful that they have the opportunity to play on the WTA tour. They have definately reaped the benefits. Richard Williams certainly has too. Many times I have seen Venus and Serena as ungracious losers when they are beat in a match. They have said many times, "I played the worst match in my life," or "the other person played way above their level." You will hear more of these excuses as they are getting old as far as tennis standards go. They do have other pursuits besides tennis. Acting? Please. They couldn't even make their reality show work. Perhaps they can design some more ugly clothes that nobody wears. It just goes to show you, that you can't buy class.

To the poster who stated that the Williams sisters had to work harder to get where they were in tennis - No, a match point is a match point, and the effort needed to get it is no harder for someone with color in their skin than one with less. Contests of athleticism are a level playing field at elite levels, give or take specific genetic advantages or training. A win is a win is a win, and with so many wins, you advance. The media did give the Williams sisters a hard time. The media didn't know how to talk to them or interview them at first. Plus they came around when Hingis was in her glory and she's an idiot, that may have started things off on the wrong foot. The media trashed them and made them look like they had attitudes. I was a fan from the beginning and I guess I believed it. Then when I saw Serena on "Punk'd" (when she had no idea she was being filmed) I couldn't believe how polite and soft-spoken she was…no attitude there. I can't believe anyone would deny racism in tennis, at least in the U.S. Is there a whiter sport than tennis? Cricket, maybe?
