Racism in Women's Tennis?

Larry Scott, the head of the Women's Tennis Association, issued a strong statement in response to assertions made by Richard Williams (poppa of Serena and Venus) to the international press regarding racism on the women's tour.
(A man is in charge of the women's tour????)
Scott stated, “The Tour has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to racism, and I have previously let Mr. Williams know that he should let me know if he ever had evidence of racist comments or acts in women’s professional tennis.”
While his daughters were playing earlier this month in Bangladore, India, Poppa Williams told the country's Deccan Herald, “Well, I’m black and I’m prejudiced, very prejudiced. People are prejudiced in tennis. I don’t think Venus or Serena was ever accepted by tennis. They never will be.”
He said the media treated his daughters unfairly, that it was “the worst media job that they have done on any human being in the world,” and that if he were Serena and Venus, he would have quit playing.
“But if you get some little white no-good trasher in America like Tracy Austin or Chris Evert, who cannot hit the ball, they (the media) will claim this is great,” he said.
The women's tennis head said, “Champions like Chris Evert and Tracy Austin have done so much to help build women’s tennis to where it is today, and it is regrettable that anyone would criticize them in this manner.”
A note to the two of them. Pick up the phone. Get together..talk it out. Trading statements via the press isn't helping anything.

this is such a shame. America and tennis in America lauded the Williams sisters, but in the end, tennis was not in their hearts like we in America wanted it to be. There were too many let downs and too many tournaments they let pass that they didn't compete in. It is their fault, and their choice (which is fine that it is their choice), but DO NOT act like tennis kicked you out because you were black. I call bullshit on the always overzealous Poppa Williams. Maybe the Williams sisters should make Oracene (sp?) their spokeswoman.

Richard Williams is the racist. Every time Serena or Venus loses a match, it is somehow caused by racism, rather than the girls having a bad day or being matched with a stronger opponent. No one should be discriminated against on the basis of their race, just as no one should be handed anything on a silver platter for the same reasons. If you want to be treated equally then quit being a sore loser and expect people to cut you slack for being a minority. Being allowed to adhere to lower expectations does not make you equal, it makes you inferior. And as for the media only representing the white players, I'm pretty sure that's complete bullshit. Everyone has heard of Serena and Venus, whether they watch tennis or not.

Blacks that I know, have more hate in them than they even know. I love V and S, and I wouldn't kick either of them out of bed for eating crackers (no pun intended). Richard's comments about Tracy and Chrissie are irrational and declasse, but I wouldn't assume that the girls share his attitude. He's obviously a very angry person. V and S were blessed with awesome talent, and they have had many more opportunities in life than their father had. They are not perfect, but they have never said anything publicly to make me think that they're racist.

the real discrimination is that WOMEN in tennis have never been taken seriously…nor given the #1 tv spot or endorsements comparable to men. daddy williams should resolve his own issues and not use these amazing young athletes as his vehicle to his voice. #1 is #1, talent is talent, and the only discrimination was on a much bigger level which isn't about race, its about gender. To some degree their father is right, but making racist comments towards others is not the right way to bring up a point diplomatically. Venus and Serena get a multitude of press and media attention, but it's not necessarily related to their tennis skills. It's because of everything else but tennis! At the actual tournaments (especially the one that he's referencing), they don't get the same love as other tennis stars. They are often booed in favor of players with far less tennis prowress than they have. They have proven time and again that they are much better than most tennis stars, but are often treated unfairly at tournaments. I suppose they may need to get another manager or agent being that Maria Sharapova is the highest paid female athlete! And what is her relevance again??? She's one a few tournaments but is really not a comparison to venus and Serena. Anna Kournakova made much bucks on just being a pretty face in tennis because she's never won anything in her life. The other tennis players are "prettier" I suppose! Serena needs to tone her body down because she's starting to look like a body builder.

How dare Richard Williams trash talk Tracy Austin and Chris Evert like that! I am a huge tennis fan and if it weren't for players like Evert and Austin, women's tennis wouldn't be where it is today. I think the Williams sisters a very accepted, 2 of the most popular players in the eyes of fans. He should just shut up. Its talk like this that puts the world against him.

The world's number one tennis player is Justine Henin. She is Belgian, athletic and very tenacious. There are six other women ranked ahead of Venus and Serena who have beaten them consistently over the past couple of years, including two Serbian players Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic at number two and three in the world rankings. They are professional, work hard and are gracious in defeat. They don't belittle their opponents when they lose like the Williams' sisters seem to do, and they don't throw in the race card as an excuse. They just win.
