When 2 Become 1

The Justice Department has just approved the long in-the-works merger of Sirius and XM Satellite Radio.

Yay for corporate conglomerates!

What impact will this have on the consumer now????

Re: Kid – Kid, you are a joke. There is no reasonable alternative to gasoline. There is more than reasonable alternatives to satellite radio. The merger of two struggling satellite radio companies will not drag the economy down. If prices go up, then drop the subscription and listen to the free commercials on FM or AM. If this was a bad thing it would not have made it this far into the approval process.

For those of us who are DJ's in the terrestrial radio industry THAT'S what concerns me…. of course, until XM/Sirius figures out that they need to do LOCAL things I'm not *too* concerned about it… especially since now I bet they start putting commercials in b/c they don't have that aspect to hold over the others' head.

Interesting. Maybe the name could be called X-S-M short for JISM.

Sirius is so great! If you don't have it you should definately get it. I'm a huge 80's music fan and they have 2 really great stations. Its so much better than listening to all those commercials and stupid drive time chit chat on AM/FM.

    AWESOME!!!!

I have two Sirius receivers that have lifetime memberships on them (about $500 each several years ago). I have already made my money back on the purchases and once the FCC approves this then I get the best of both worlds. I have been in NHL purgatory since the games became exclusive to XM this year (had been with Sirius entirely or partially prior to this year).

I live and vacation in areas that don't have the best AM or FM programming that can be received and the receivers see heavy use the entire year.

Re: Monopoly?? – Actually it's going to be cheaper. And you will have the option to pick and choose what stations you want instead of 50 spanish and korean stations. It's going to be nice.

Perez, that's not good news. When the media is owned by a small group of people, you can bet that their politics will be injected into it. You only have to look at Rupert Murdoch's empire for an example. Fox news is fair and balanced for a neo-conservative, maybe, but not for all of America. It's unfortunate when someone's point of view plays out as objective fact. A lot of Americans don't have the filters to decipher the truth, which is why a lot of politicians and talk show hosts whip up drama by using racism, anti-women and anti-gay hysteria.

It will have ZERO impact on the consumer. Sure there is bound to be price hikes to Sirius and XM subscribers because you will get more stations now but if you don't like it - listen to the radio stations that come out of your car for FREE.
I am getting sirius next month because Howard Stern is a media god!
