How Much Would You Pay For A Movie???

paris-hilton.jpg

Would you pay $35 to see a movie in a fancy schmancy theater?

Well, some biz investors think that some of you will!

A group that includes the Retirement Systems of Alabama pension fund are sinking $200 million to build 50 luxury movie theaters across the United States over the next five years.

The first two theaters will open up outside of Chicago and Seattle.

Each complex will sport theaters featuring 40 reclining armchair seats with footrests, digital projection and the capability to screen 2-D and 3-D movies, as well as a lounge and bar serving cocktails and appetizers, a concierge service and valet parking.

Is this all really worth $35, though?!

Theaters make their money on concessions so the high priced stuff they'll be peddling - fancy food like sushi- is what industry experts are assuming will make those investors bank. So you'd have to pay inflated food prices ON TOP of the $35 ticket!

Rip off!!

I would pay $50 bucks a ticket if I didn't have to sit with the scum that goes to the movies. If I didn't have to listen to people on their nextels the whole time I am trying to watch a movie, I would gladly pay. High prices keep the riff raff out.

that's already happening in Mexico, they are called Cinepolis VIP, they have just about anything to eat, including sushi, 3 course meal and foreign beer( german and dutch) and the entrance is about 10 dlls, also, they have full reclinable leather seats and service,,something else, in Brno (Czech Republic) they also have that.

What a rip! Anyone willing to throw down $35 a head should just go out and buy a damn projector! Shiiiit.

    Re: Sara

Sara it's in Rosemont and it's been open for a while. Always busy and they also have sitter service for parents. It's not $35 either. IIRC $22 with sitter service - which is made up of registered nurses, licensed teachers, and educational major students. It's a great idea and a great service, IMO.

35 dollars to see a movie? Haha! That's why so many idiots are filing for bankruptcy. The only time I go to the movies is in the summer time when something good is actually playing…can't wait for the Dark Knight!

    115

well things are expensive anyways..i live in saskatoon and i pay 11.00 or something for one ticket..plus the crap you buy, it adds up anyways. whats wrong with selling more than popcorn and shit, most of it kinda sucks. having the option, anyway is at issue. i wish some stupid trust would do that here. i would go there a bit, well i think for like a dutch date, would suit it alot. a decent dinner and a movie prob for ok price then having no feet on your chair? lol perez is being extra mean today.

  16. jessica says – reply to this

I would pay extra to go to a movie theater that does not serve food. I seriously can not stand it.

Most of the Movies Hollywood puts out are not even worth the $3 rental! I think it is retarded!!! How much extra cash does the 1 percent of the population have? Our schools are falling apart.. people in the struggle.. struggle too much while the pampered are rubbing it in the faces of the MIDDLE Class.. that doesn't even exist anymore. I think it's obnoxious, and even if one can afford to throw money away.. throw it the way of the hungry.. poor. stop paying these brats something they are not worth. How STUPID do they think we are????

  21. Austinite says – reply to this

    122

The suburbs of Chicago already has a movie theater similiar to there concept. Its called Hollywood Blvd. There is a full service bar, full food menu, your own server that takes care of you throughout the movie.

Price to see a movie is $8.00

we have this in Milwaukee already. It's $11-15 per ticket, and includes valet parking and popcorn. Big loveseat sized seats. A bar and restaurant, and you can bring your food and drinks into the theater. It's actually really cool.

    126

P-Nasty, we already have that in Dubai, for roughly the same price. It's always sold out! You get the food served to you by a waiter — they have everything but sushi - but knowing this place, we'll probably have sushi as well in no time!

I live in Seattle, and there is NO WAY I would pay that much to go to a movie. I dislike paying the regular $10 to go to a movie. Netflix is better anyway, and you don't have to worry about people talking through the movie then!

  30. kt says – reply to this

    130

    ummm

we already have that in tampa. you have to be 21 to go (regardless of the movie) and you get access to a full bar and fancy recliners for seats.

but it doesn't cost $35…i think it's like $15. bc you have to pay for stuff once your in there.

  31. Lelly says – reply to this

    131

Thats kuhrazy! It's already $9.50 admission and $4 for a bag of M&M's! If they were SMART, they'd make a cheaper version. We have an older theatre where I live that plays old movies but has a bar and snacks like pizza in the back and little tables by your chair to eat on….and it sure as hell isn't $35!

  32. Gina says – reply to this

I too am so weary of the rich and ignorant looking for ways to make their lives "better," when there are people in the same fucking country who don't even have a ROOF over their heads, let alone an opportunity to sit with a bunch of greedy fucks and watch a $35 piece of crap.

I have been saying some one should do this for such a long time now. But i would only pay $20 at the most.

  40. Flowerbomb says – reply to this

    140

They already have lots of movie taverns. The leather chairs are pretty comfortable, they have a full bar and decent food, although no sushi and the tickets are like $5.00. That's good enough.

  41. Skitz says – reply to this

    141

We've had this in Australia for years and it's amazing. But I don't think it will fly in the US - average people are just too cheap to want to spend money to enjoy a nice night out with amazing food and comfortable seating. My husband and I go every 2 months.

  42. Michelle says – reply to this

    142

Great. So the place will be crawling with people who smell like seaweed and raw fish, and puking up behind the seats from slamming down too many mixed drinks…or hollering and talking too loud because they're drunk. Gimme me a break. And how much will the food cost? A BUNCH. I paid $8.59 for a small popcorn and a small Dasani bottled water last weekend, on top of the ticket. I can only imagine what they'll charge for sushi and mixed drinks. A tip for Hollywood…if studios make an industry wide commitment to churn out decent entertainment each and every time a movie is released, America will go to the movies. Turn out duds or half assed flicks and all the sushi in the world won't pack them in.

  43. Lol says – reply to this

Dublin Ireland my local cinema charges $25 for a standard seat. I'd happily pay $10 for space and smaller crowds alone.

they have these kind of theaters in Australia called "gold star". it is pricey but it truly was the most amazing experience, particularly if you are a movie fan. you order your food, drinks, candy, etc. before the movie and you let them know when you want each thing delivered. most people save the experience for special occasions.

    145

they started these in mexico and sold the franchise to costa rica and other central american countries. it is worth 10 usd.
they are quite fancy and the food is pretty expensive.. maybe the $35 will include food? have no idea.
anyway.. nothing new to my world.. just think its quite expensive

  46. toy says – reply to this

fuggetaboutit, the movies these days arent worth the $10 that we pay now. Most "regular" people think that $10 is outrageous as it is.

  47. Tracy says – reply to this

RIDICULOUS! I won't even pay the $10 to go to the regualr movies- ordering a pizza and watching Netflix on my couch is so much better!

    148

In Costa Rica, we have "VIP" theaters with just this - reserved seating (you pick where you'd like to sit), leather recliners, a special lounge, and full-service concierge service. They'll bring everything from caramel corn to made-to-order sushi. The tickets cost $8 and the food between $2 and $8.

You can get tickets to the New York Philharmonic for less than $35. I hate how marketers constantly find new ways to make everything damn thing into a "luxury experience" to squeeze more money out of the people that have it and make things less & less accessible for people who don't.

Maybe if they start making better movies I'd consider going for $20, but I have a hard time even parting with the $12 they're charging in NYC these days for most of the junk that's getting made. I don't care if I'm sitting in a fancy chair–crap is crap.

In Pensacola, FL they had the big cushy seats, diner type food, had beer, let you smoke and of course a big screen movie (might be a couple months old) for——————— an effing dollar.

    Now that's a deal.

  52. Patty Blagojevich says – reply to this

    154

here in boca, our muvico theatre has a 'premier' section. you see the movie in the same theater as those with regular priced tickets, except you're sitting up high in a loft-area with loveseats and free popcorn and drinks. oh, and there's also a full-service bar and restaurant right outside the loft doors. TOTALLY worth the thirty bucks, especially if you're seeing the right movie! :)

  57. Emilie says – reply to this

    157

The Chicago-area MUVICO has been open awhile now, is Rosemont near O'Hare Airport. Personally, drinking while watching a movie is a bad idea. One drink will make me tired and too many will make me not pay attention to the movie!

  58. dysonbry says – reply to this

    158

we have them here in OZ, they are called "gold class cinemas" and are fab, you use them when you want to see something reeeallly good and it's $50 here, thats just for the ticket, they bring food and drinks while you watch.
All the surroundings are better than the normal theatre.

  59. dee says – reply to this

    159

If it'll weed out all the low lifes who come to the movies with their babies in strollers and let the older kids run up and down the ailes… and talk as if they were in the street calling out to each other, then sure, I'd gladly pay. Rude low life folk make the movie going experience awful for a lot of people…we hardly ever go anymore because of that.

  60. dave says – reply to this

    160

sorry to say, but I would TOTALLY pay $35 to see a movie… I currently don't go to theaters because it is such bad experience with rowdy people, little kids running around…

  61. cal says – reply to this

    161

Hollywood has to "Hollywoodify" everything. Now the simple pleasures different types of people being brought together through film is going to be lost in luxury movie theaters. On a related note, I wonder if they're going to start charging more money for good films now and 2 dollars for Paris' nightmare.

Talk about being late to jump on the bandwagon! We have theatres like that already here in Toronto, and they're great. $16 for VIP theatres that have leather recliners, pre-selected seating, waiters that come to you at your seat, unique menus that serve things like mushroom caps, sushi, nacho platters, chicken, etc. Annnndddd it's liquor-licensed, so you can have margaritas, beer, wine etc. as well. As if that's not good enough, it even has an age minimum! 19+ only (legal age), so you don't have any annoying kids or punks in there disturbing your movie.

  72. czarina says – reply to this

    172

Sadly they are wasting thier money.

If you live anywhere near the border of the US and mexico, you can cross south and check out Cinepolis movie houses. Go to the VIP one. It will cost you a whopping 7$ for the movie. You can then sit at the full liquor bar, have Sushi, get candy and sodas, grab a coffee and or a crepes' and then stroll into the movie with your food and drink to sit in an over stuffed recliner that leans way back. The only thing missing is the foot rest.

  73. soup says – reply to this

    173

HAH! And they think they're so innovative?

Movie theaters in Thailand have offered this for years.

Imagine a whole theater with 50 or so lazy boy chairs in it, cocktails and snacks brought to you DURING the movie whenever you specify. Feel like tempura a half hour into a movie? Done! Like a whiskey sours with your opening sequence? Voila. And the best part, they offer it for about the same cost as a regular movie theater ticket here - of course every sheep who walks through American theater doors is immediately sheared with the CRAZY high prices for stale popcorn and flat soft drinks.

And I think their projections are right. Americans will pay $35 for that because they've been conditioned to expect so much less. Hey, can't blame those businessmen from milking the cow a little harder.

  74. Homero says – reply to this

    178

They already have it in Milwaukee, its called iPic Theatres. Bowling alley, movie ticket is $15 for popcorn, valet parking, and a movie with reclining seats and dining in food and drinks.

  79. Tee says – reply to this

    179

I live in the Chicago burbs and go to a premium movie theatre regularly, it costs us $17 a ticket and it's often packed on Friday/Saturday nights. We sit in leather sets and they serve food and drinks (including alcohol) all throughout the film. Or you can show up early and have a meal or a drink. The ticket comes with free popcorn, also refills on drinks like soda if you buy one are free. I love it, and it's nice being in a 21 and over crowd, and most of the staff mix a good drink. I also like that our seats are reserved so we can show up right before the movie instead of getting there early for good seats and then sitting there with nothing to do.

I personally wouldn't pay $35 but I live like 2 minutes from the theatre. But a lot of people come out here from the city and suburbs that are closer to the city, and maybe they would pay the extra $18 to avoid dealing with the drive. That's a pretty steep jump though….

We have them at home in Australia. It works and you pay it without hesitation, you don't hear the plebs munching on their popcorn, there are no lines, you can have a little privacy and can grab a cheese plate and bottle of red wine. With downloads on the web though, why would you want to leave home when everything that is playing in the theater is just a click away anyway..?

OLD - already been in australia foryears - gold class cinemas!
You order your food and drink to be served at the begining, middle or end of the movie and they serve alcohol and have recliners etc.
They are fantastic and worth the extra money!

We have Gold Class in Australia and it's amazing. We pay $36 and inflated food prices. Yes you don't go to it all the time, but it's nice for a special occasion. I took my fiancee to it for Valentine's day as he'd never been, and now he wants to go back all the time!

  87. blaz says – reply to this

    187

Definitely already had these for years in Australia. Costs about $35 and not something you would do for every movie, but great for a fun night out. Have wondered why the USA doesn't already have them. They are always sold out, really hard to get tickets for, so I have no doubt they will do well here in the States. This is my favourite way to see movies, I just wish I could afford to do it more often!

  88. jess says – reply to this

    188

Sundance Theater in San Francisco already has that with the exception of the footrest and their tickets are about $10.50! For $35 I want some atmospheric changes. When there is a storm on screen the wind should blow inside the theater. When there is a car wreck your seats should shake!! Damn $35 for a foot rest, I don't think so.

  89. Christalena says – reply to this

    189

I think that's a great idea. The price is a bit steep, but there truly is a market for it. Maybe include a nice restaurant in the theater as well. Here in Wine Country folks would be jumping all over it. Hmmm. More the older crowd looking for a nice evening out minus the screaming babies and thugs kicking the chair in back of you while your trying to enjoy a movie with a date.

Do investors seriously think this is an original idea??? Muvico in Florida has been doing this for years.

There is one by me, has been for a few years now and it's the ONLY way I go see a movie. The ticket price is only $19 though, not $35. It's a completely separate theater, you have to call and make reservations (your party is always seated together!). No one under 21 allowed (which rocks) and you show up an hour early for dinner in the restaurant. The food is awesome and reasonably priced and they have a full bar.

Once the theater is ready, you take your gigantic leather assigned seats, bring your food with you if you didn't finish and you have a wait staff that waits on you the entire movie. All the free popcorn you can eat :)

The last time I went it was about $100 with drinks (an tip) - it ROCKED!!!

If the $35 ticket price will keep out all the riff-raff, loud talkers, trouble makers, and the "lower" class, I'll gladly pay the extra $$$.
