How Much Would You Pay For A Movie???

paris-hilton.jpg

Would you pay $35 to see a movie in a fancy schmancy theater?

Well, some biz investors think that some of you will!

A group that includes the Retirement Systems of Alabama pension fund are sinking $200 million to build 50 luxury movie theaters across the United States over the next five years.

The first two theaters will open up outside of Chicago and Seattle.

Each complex will sport theaters featuring 40 reclining armchair seats with footrests, digital projection and the capability to screen 2-D and 3-D movies, as well as a lounge and bar serving cocktails and appetizers, a concierge service and valet parking.

Is this all really worth $35, though?!

Theaters make their money on concessions so the high priced stuff they'll be peddling - fancy food like sushi- is what industry experts are assuming will make those investors bank. So you'd have to pay inflated food prices ON TOP of the $35 ticket!

Rip off!!

Uh, hell no I wouldn't pay $35 for a movie ticket + the cost of overpriced food. We're in a recession peeps–even if Bush and Paulson deny it. Save your money. You're going to need it.

I live in Puerto Rico and there's a movie theater (Fine Arts) like that in San Juan and you only have to pay $7. Appetizers, sushi, champagne and all!!!

They already have something similar in Australia. It seems to be going okay here, I know people who go. I think it's more for the movie you've waited half a year to come out; the die hard fans. When Harry Potter came out, the fancy theaters were PACKED!

    210

I have been to one of these theatres and they are really cool. Drink a beer and watch a movie. Don't be so cheap perez!

We have "gold class" here is Australia and it is very popular. Only 18 yr+ is allowed in there. A great way to see a movie without little kids crying and escaping from their parents to do a run around. It does cost about $27.

  14. obvious says – reply to this

    214

Another disgusting example of the widening gap between the rich and poor.

  15. Clesan700 says – reply to this

    215

Yeah they have this in Australia called Gold Class. You get unlimited popcorn and a complimentary alcoholic drink.
It's fairly popular but I did it once to see James Bond but don't think it's worth it. Unless it's for a movie you've been dying to see!!

    Ode to Perez
slamming them for the high admission price
But if they paid him to say it,
    he'd say it was NICE.
    Here in Seattle, we're excited
we'll wait to see what they do…
And when they pay off Perez
    he'll support it too.

  17. Lucy says – reply to this

    217

This is already happening in new zealand for the same cost and it's really popular. it's a really nice way to watch the film, and it's something you splurge on every once and a while

  18. VANNICK from CANADA says – reply to this

    218

THIS has been in AUSTRALIA for YEARS AND YEARS… this is nothing new and does very well in Sydney, AU!!

BUT with the recession going on down there will those POOR peeps be able to afford it??

  19. Sw33tStar21 says – reply to this

    219

We have that in New Zealand. It's $30 but you get a soft drink and popcorn included, plus the option of buying alcohol, wine, and food that is actually decently priced. It DOES sell and those people are brilliant for jumping on the trend that will happen in the US!

  24. Lynsey says – reply to this

    224

The bright side to this is that there will probably not be kids in the theatre! I would pay that to avoid movies with children.

  25. Sw33tStar21 says – reply to this

    225

Im American- you Americans need to stop whining about paying $10 for a movie, seriously! It costs $15 here in New Zealand to see a movie and I would KILL to pay $10 instead. Even though Im American and lived in California most of my life, I have to tell you that Americans don't know how good they have it with prices and conveniences. You're all terrible, spoiled brats and don't even realize it.

Hey Perez, back here in Dallas we have this little place called Studio Movie Grill (studiomoviegrill.com). You're not in a recliner, but you do have decently cushioned chairs on wheels (leather computer chairs) and a little table in front of you. You have a waiter and can order food and drinks (beer, wine, liquor, or pop…not to mentin there's a full bar in the lobby) of any sort; summoning them by just turning on your table light. The food and drinks are priced according to normal standards and your movie ticket is the same price it would be anywhere else in town (5-8 bucks). They have several locations around DFW. So… good luck to these wallet leeching m-er f-ers getting us to pay $35 a ticket down here in Big Tex just so we can order sushi and sit in a recliner. That's what's what Blue Fish togo and your lazy boy at the casa is for!!! At least at home you can enjoy a doobie too. lol. Love you lots!!!

  32. Bery says – reply to this

    232

    Not good!

Here in Juarez Mexico we have those luxury movie theaters. We call them VIP. Chairs are nice and you also have a waiter that takes your order and before the movie begins you are enjoyings delicious crepes, coffee, sushi, subs, beer, wine, cocktails, popcorn, etc.. It also has a place where you can wait until your movie begins and when you buy the tickets you can choose your seats. It's pretty nice. All of that for like $8.00 dlls. and if you go on wednesdays it's even cheaper. Even people from El Paso, Tx. come here.

    236

We have had theatres like these in New Zealand for quite a few years now - but they are cheaper, $NZ30, so I guess about $US20? They have full recliner / lazy-boy armchairs, private lounge, bar / dinner menu etc, and they serve you in the theatre during the movie if you want. What we don't have is the concierge and valet parking - so maybe that makes up for the difference? You used to get free soft drinks and popcorn too which make it easier to justify but they've stopped that now! We go there quite a bit and enjoy it - though we usually only go if there's a movie we LOVE. H

  37. jenn says – reply to this

    237

I think it's a great idea. I've been wishing for an upscale theatre for years. Not so much for the luxury but to keep all the loud teens and kids out. I've passed up movies numerous times because I didn't want to be with the demographic I knew I'd have to deal with while trying to peacefully watch the show.

  38. Johnny Lane says – reply to this

    238

Total insanity! These people have more money than sense. Soon new releases will be available over the internet quickly after release and people will watch them on their home theater systems. Only a handful of movies make back their production budgets in theater release.

We in Australia already have it, its called gold class cinemas… and its actually quite popular for the block busters.. or a special night out with your someone.. but our normal movie tickets are $17 so its really not that much difference and you get a comfy recliner!

    253

This exists in Australia - its called Gold Class. It works, its great to give to someone as a gift. Its Expensive but great fun once in while. You only go for movies you are dying to see. Its an experience. The only annoying thing is people ordering drinks - like every 30 minutes - and the door opening every so often! Its been going on for 5 years.

  54. Dey says – reply to this

    254

In mexico we already have movie theaters like that, they are Cinepolis VIP, leather recliners, tiny movable tables, waiters, sushi, gourmet sandwiches, bar, etc, and it's only 98 pesos, like 9dlrs.
regular movies are about 5dlrs in regular Cinepolis.
i WOULD NOT pay 35dlrs to watch a movie… but i would pay around 15dlrs for a Cinepolis VIP, i LOOOOOVE those theaters… i miss those theaters :( living in mexico does hace its perks, but now in the USA i miss those little things…

  55. kimpossibly says – reply to this

    255

Honestly, I think that is a ridiculous concept BUT- -here in Houston…where everyone thrives on outdoing each other and spending money to impress…that $35 movie ticket might be a winner.
We already have the Movie Tavern here where you can watch your movie and be served dinner and alcoholic drinks but it is more laid back (and way cheaper).
Movie Tavern is cool for the simple fact that there aren't 39 juvenile delinquents loudly sneaking in to every movie you see…not having to deal with THAT is the only thing that might make ME want to pay $35 to see a movie…but ONLY with the guarantee of no annoying 13 year old riff-raff- -or stupid people who talk about the movie during the movie. ;)

the landmark theater in westside pavilion has living room-esque theaters with mini leather sofas that seat 1,2, or 3 people. frozen yogurt, pizza, etc…$ $9.50.

    that's just stupid.

We have one theatre in Auckland, NZ that is called a Gold Class cinema and it does pretty well. Much smaller - may 30 seats in the whole cinema. The extra comfort is well worth the extra cost!!

  60. ohhwewish says – reply to this

    260

Rip OFF. We watch a movie to enjoy ourselfs, not to get drunk or fat. That's what will happen if they do that cuz we're goin 2 over eat in our luguary chairs while drinking.

  61. jen says – reply to this

    261

…had them in Australia for years.. Is usually about $30, but there are sometimes deals. Beats the hell out of having to chare a cinema with revolting kids. A night can cost $100 but is worth it if the movie is good - especially if it's a long one! Cheese platter and bottle of wine beats the hell out of a tub of popcorn anyway. Theu must be making money or they wouldn't still be going…

  62. yank in australia says – reply to this

    262

we have gold class here in australia. i don't think it's that good, or worth the money. 37 bucks to sit on a recliner. food & drinks extra, about another 30. sadly, aussies will grasp at anything to somehow make themselves feel superior. americans aren't cheap, we just like to get what we pay for.

of course, it will work in the states in places like nyc, miami, l.a., etc. of course.

They are called 'Gold Class' in Australia and the $35 per ticket is definately worth it…. in each cinema there is only 24 seats, all recliners and you can get hot snacks or lollies, beverages (beer, wine, milkshakes, softdrinks, coffee etc) all brought out to you during the movie. Before you walk in you tell the bar you want this snack or beverage bought in every 30mins or halfway through the movie, whatever you like. It's a great present, or occaisional night out away from the kids and crowds.

As crazy as it sounds, I'd definitely pay to see movies there. I go to the show so rarely (maybe once a year) b/c of all the idiots that sit around talking, chomping nachos and popcorn and answering their cells, maybe the $35.00 price tag will keep them out of there and I can enjoy a movie for once! :-)

    280

I cant believe you even have to ask the question.

Of course these work, and have sucessfully worked in many other countries for almost a decade.

I remember my car club booking a gold class cinema out when fast & the furious first came out in cinema's. With only 18 seats per cinema, its very affordable too book the entire cinema for a function / birthday etc.

I now live in a very small country town (1 main road, a handfull of shops, and not much else), and we have had Gold Class for about 2 years - and everyone thought we were slow!!

  81. b4 says – reply to this

    281

There are already cinemas like this throughout the country. I am the GM of one such location and our guests LOVE IT! The elevated price is not just for the film, but the entire experience…clean auditoriums, comfortable seating, quality presentation, mature/attentive/respectful staff, better snack selection, few (if any) teens or children. We also do personal announcements/greetings before the film starts to welcome guests and ask everyone to respectfully turn off phones and pagers so everyone can enjoy the film as it was intended (this frequently gets a round of applause). It really is the quality of the experience and the staffing required to bring that to those who want to experience it that you are paying for.
This is NOT for everyone and the industry knows that. It is the mature adult audiences that have been pushed out of the multiplexes due to rude or indifferent staff, even more obnoxious adolescent and "adult" movie goers, poor quality food fare, and uncomfortable seating. And they are the target audience of these high end cinemas and they are more than willing to pay the price for a quality experience.

    282

I dont know Jugh, I think it may work. We have it in Sydney- bar, lounge, waiters bringing "gourmet" food to your reclining seat at a time you specify and whilst its almost so over the top its laughable, its definatly alot of fun.

Hey Geniuses! Who wants sushi made by some pimply 14 year old in a Sgt. Pepper uniform? Fuck you and your bad idea!!! Take a look at the "Bridge" movie theater in marina del rey calif. It was supposed to be this exact same bullshit idea 8 years ago– then NOBODY WENT THERE BECAUSE IT WAS TOO EXPENSIVE– and now it is like a dollar theater gymboree full of screaming abandoned ghetto kids- with so much fucking jizz on the floor you can barely make it to your fucking seat without some kind of ice-skating maneuver to avoid breaking your back. BAD FUCKING IDEA!!! By the time you build your shitty theater, most of the people who would pay $35 EACH to see a fucking movie will have HD projectors in their fucking house and would rather just pay $20 to PPV the film at HOME. ARE YOU LISTENING STUDIOS?? 3D MOVIES AREN'T GOING TO SAVE YOUR ASSES. THEY ARE ALL LAME, GIMMICKY BULLSHIT– THEY THE FUCKING SIX-FLAGS OF MOVIES. YOU ONLY NEED TO GO ONCE A YEAR (if that). WAKE UP!!!

Besides a sucky movie, do I get a personal happy ending? I went and saw "Meet the Brown's" last Saturday. I paid $5.50 for the 4:35 p.m. showing in North Hollywood. I spent $9.00 for food from my favorite Italian sandwhich and salad spot and $4.25 at the movie concession stand for an over priced soda (after my Italian meal, I was rather parched). So I spent about $20.00. I normally do not go to the movies, I wanted to support Tyler Perry. But I digress. What exactly do I get for $35.00? Besides sitting near some yuppie couple with no sense of humor. Only in America!

Are you brain dead? It is a $35 ticket - not $3500 ticket. I go to Gold Class in Australia not becuase I feel "entitled" but because I like to sit in comfort and sip wine whilst I watch my movie. And I am your average middle class person.
