How Much Would You Pay For A Movie???

paris-hilton.jpg

Would you pay $35 to see a movie in a fancy schmancy theater?

Well, some biz investors think that some of you will!

A group that includes the Retirement Systems of Alabama pension fund are sinking $200 million to build 50 luxury movie theaters across the United States over the next five years.

The first two theaters will open up outside of Chicago and Seattle.

Each complex will sport theaters featuring 40 reclining armchair seats with footrests, digital projection and the capability to screen 2-D and 3-D movies, as well as a lounge and bar serving cocktails and appetizers, a concierge service and valet parking.

Is this all really worth $35, though?!

Theaters make their money on concessions so the high priced stuff they'll be peddling - fancy food like sushi- is what industry experts are assuming will make those investors bank. So you'd have to pay inflated food prices ON TOP of the $35 ticket!

Rip off!!

Aren't tix expensive enough already?? I am all for great food and paying for it but, damn, not a $35 ticket THEN food. Who can afford the movies anymore? Quit paying the actors 6 billion for a film and maybe we can afford it!

We already have this in Oz. It might be pricey but for a treat it is so worth it!!!!

    303

Actually, they've been doing this in other countries for YEARS! I've been living in NZ and my friends and I go to the BIG releases (Borne, Harry Potter, Transformers) at the "Gold Lounge". $35 to get a BIG comfy reclining chair, all you can drink soda and popcorn, and you can order food right to your chair (I personally order dinner during opening credits and desert an hour in…sure its an extra $20 but its worth it)

Its really nice. I thought it was going to be a rip-off but its not that bad.

Of course it's gonna work!! Here in Mexico we have those kind of cinemas and they are always full, they are just great!!

we already have this in Australia. Its called Gold Class cinemas. Tickets (just for seat) are $22 before 5pm Monday - Friday. $27 per seat Monday - Wednesday after 5pm and before 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays. On thursday, friday, saturday nights and all day public holidays, tickets are $33 per seat. Food costs anywhere between $10 and $40 with a extensive alcoholic range of drinks. The seats are reclinable, and food is brought into you in the theatre (although you do have the option of eating in the foyer too)

Its a very sucessful form of theatre. It sells out every thursday, friday and saturday night, i should know, because i work there. Im sure it will do well (if not better) in the US.

They already do this in Australia and have done for years. Its called "Gold Class" and they have a concierge service with wine, beer, food etc. Seats are HUGE, recline and have a table to put the food on. There are only about 50 seats to each cinema - perfect for date night!!

    Hi,
We have that here in australia!! Its called GOLD CLASS!! People do pay it:) It is good, but only for 3 hr movies etc lol

Please! here in Puerto Rico we have the same things five times cheaper
for a leather recliner chairs with tray tables, sushi, wine, wraps, desserts, and regular movie theater delights: $ 7.00 and parking like $5-7 still less than $20

  9. jenNikua says – reply to this

    309

there has to be like more than 30 things you can put that money into better use!

They've had these for years in Australia, and they work wonderfully. You can have a drink while you watch a movie, order in some nice food, and not have to listen to some low-rent Mamma whinge to someone on the mobile phone that her son don't respect her no more.

    It's absolute BLISS.

I hired one this year to show TopGun to all my friends (it is such a gay porn flick - wonderful!)

    312

Also, it's already happening in Australia.. they have "gold plus" theatres in the regular cinema. Reclining seats, lounge, bar… you name it.

  13. late says – reply to this

    313

already in mexico since a very very long time ago. sushi, cocktails, crepes, gourmet coffee, taken to your seat. 8 bucks (ticket alone obviously), regular movies theaters are 5 bucks. and yeah, it DOES work.

    314

HELL NO. I live in Seattle and it is hella expensive enough already…

    315

This has been going on in Australia for a couple of years. It's a great experience!! AND it's the same price… AND people still go

  16. dan says – reply to this

    316

Yeah, its Village cinemas doing it… We have had them in Australia for nearly 8 years! and its not something you would do for every movie - but for EVENT films its awesome… Massive recliners, all digital and best thing is the price makes it exclusively for people who will PAY to see their movie in luxury, movie buffs, business people, rich people, so no little kids screaming, no teenagers on their mobile phones and you can order your food to come in at certain time. (at least here you can).. So get your drinks 10 minutes into the movie, pop corn and coke at the 20 minute mark and dessert at the 30 min mark etc)…all served by waiters. Its Awesome - your gonna love it.

  17. Hello Kitty says – reply to this

    317

    "Rip off"

    BS !

I would so pay $35 to be comfy while I watch my film and the price will keep the trash away. Add on a "NO CHILDREN ALLOWED" and I would slap an extra $5

  18. Aussie says – reply to this

    318

VERY popular in Australia, only for above 18!! ALCOHOL!!!!!

They already have this in Australia and it rocks! Great for a date or a great movie. Especially since they bring you beers during the movie!!

  22. Adamo says – reply to this

    322

Same in Australia.. we also have luxe cinemas. Generally a separate section of the audience on a level above the main cinema. Profitable for the operators and lots of people book out sessions well in advance. Food options are great as well as the seat beverage service.

  23. RH says – reply to this

    323

Dude, they have been doing that shit in Australia for years.

  24. Kate says – reply to this

    324

We have luxury movies in NZ, works really well for a treat but costs an arm and a leg to go about $100 NZ. For a couple of drinks desert, pop corn and nice seats….

    325

Movie theaters will eventually become dinosaurs anyway. And who has that money anyway? Hello?!? Rocky economy! Save your pennies, kids. Download your flicks on Amazon and save a bundle.

    Sheesh!!! If Australia has it….

    I love it!

  27. Caz says – reply to this

    327

Perez we have that here in Australia already. It's called Gold Class, it's about the same price. You have luxury recliners and fancy smancy food with a fully licensed bar. You order your food before u go in and they deliver it to you in the movie at the nominated time you selected for them to do this. It also has a fully licensed bar, so they bring you your booze while your in the cinema so you can piss up in the movie while your watching it. The tickets cost $35 and yes, it's popular and always busy. The cinema's only hold a small number of people.

  28. sezwazza says – reply to this

they have that is australia and it rocks been her for years. we even have a bean bag cinema

    329

i personally dont think it will work. I live in Monterrey Mexico where we have had those theaters for like 5 years now, and it does work becuase it only costs 10 dollars plus the sushi and frappe capuccinos, etc. but 35 is way too much, not worth it!

  30. Emma says – reply to this

    330

This has been happening here in Australia for the last 10 years, its called GOLD CLASS. I worked in the cinema industry for 6 years and the Gold class theatres were always booked out, sometimes weeks in advance for big movie releases!. Great experience and enjoyable way to watch a movie, with food and alcohol and best of all NO kids! :) There are Moran recliners seated in sets of two with a small table for your food and drinks in between and only say 40 seats in each cinema. Also great way to entertain clients. Perez, next time your are in Oz, I will take you. My shout! :)

  31. madariini says – reply to this

    331

I dont think its so expensive. In Finland going to see movie cost about 14 dollars, popcorns and drink cost together 10 dollars, so its not so much more if food and drinks are inclueded to the 35 dollars.

  32. me says – reply to this

    332

idiots. PERHAPS THEY NEED MORE MARKET RESEARCH, THEATRES LIKE THAT ALREADY EXIST. I CAN THINK OF AT LEAST 3 IN MANHATTAN AND WESTCHESTER COUNTY - AND THEY HAVE NORMAL "TICKET PRICES" WAY TO BLOW A PENSION FUND.

  33. Michael says – reply to this

    333

I live in Japan and we have these theater already. "premier screens". Tickets are $30 and you get e free alcohol drink ticket. they serve champagne, food, cocktails and the regular fare…NOT worth it, I think!

  34. Duane says – reply to this

    334

if you think about it, you pay just about that much to take yourself and someone else to the movies. SO WHY NOT INCLUDE A BAR IN THE EQUATION?!!!!!

  35. Jessica-Rarebit says – reply to this

    335

Holy crap! Yep, it's a rip-off, but I hope it makes money because that's part of my retirement fund! It'll be twenty years before I can collect, but a set-back at this point could hurt. Why would anyone want sushi at the movies???

  36. alli says – reply to this

    336

They have a bunch of these theaters in Mexico where they serve alcoholic beverages and have more variety of foods. Some areas even have a table for four and it did work out pretty well, the only difference is that it is not that expensive, probably like $5 usd more than the usual ticket and what you buy is optional and you pay extra for it. I think if the $35 is all inclusive it may work

  37. Brooke says – reply to this

    337

They have theaters like this in Wichita, Ks balcony seating, reclining chairs the size of love seats, adults only, a lounge area with a bar, waiters, menus and liquor.. It was only 15 but it was worth it. U can expect to pay more in a bigger city isn't that the way it goes..If it works in Kansas Im sure it will work anywhere

  38. Carl says – reply to this

    338

I would pay that much as long as the movie wasn't "The Hottie and The Naughty".

  39. MP says – reply to this

    339

We have this in Puerto Rico, minus the concierge and the alcohol, and including the sushi and gourmet sandwiches.

    $8.50. Thank you very much.

  40. tori says – reply to this

    340

Uh, yeah, I want to eat mass produced sushi at a movie house! 2ndly it kills me to spend $12 now & will only go to the matinee because it's 1/2 price. At least I don't feel too bad spending 6 bucks to see some shitty "film" because the great ones are far & few between!!

  41. tori says – reply to this

    341

On 2nd thought, if they could guarantee NO talking & no ringing cell phones & no kids, I might go.

  42. Jen says – reply to this

    342

We already have those in the Chicago area and it only costs $10 now so why they would think they could get $35 is beyond me.

  43. Meghan says – reply to this

    343

Uh… there's a theater outside Chicago called "Hollywood Boulevard" that's really nice, full of special amenities (leather chairs, full bar and menu, etc.) and cheap. It's like $10 and they run special deals all the time.

I will not spend $35 to see a movie I can buy in three months for $20.

  44. Meghan says – reply to this

    344

Re: Sara – HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD! :) $10 all the time, $5 matinees (sometimes) and $3 with college i.d. on Wednesdays!

    345

I used to live in Monterrey, Mexico and they had this type of thing in the regular theaters. It was about $12 and a regular seat was about $8. It was actually worth it because their movie theaters were really crowded so if you bought one of those tickets you automatically had a great seat, with a waiter and your choice of dinner and drinks (not included in the ticket price, obviously). Maybe they should try doing it like that first before they go making totally separate theaters!!!???

  46. Addy says – reply to this

    346

We've had this in London for years. It costs $100 a ticket and the theater has everything from reclining leather seats to a fully served bar and waiters. Surprisingly it's almost always fully booked. I would say charging $35 for the service is a bargain if you're the type that would pay that much money for it.

I pay 20 pounds for a movie at ODEON, you get those leather chairs and free snacks and drinks, and you go into cinema through VIP entrance, its kinda cool :)

Dont knock it til you've tried it !! We've had "Gold Class" here in Australia since forever and, IMO, it is fantastic. Yes, a bit pricey, but you just dont go every week. Save it for the big blockbusters, the movies that are 3hrs long, so that you have a comfy seat, good food, someone to bring you drink every hour and the comfort in knowing that there are only 20 other people to disturb you, not 200 like in a normal theater. No kids crying, no teenagers chatting or texting on their phones. Bliss.
