The season premiers of The Hills was the highest rated telecast for cable all year long so far!
It was also the highest rated episode ever of The Hills.
It even beat out broadcast television channels with the highest ratings for the night!
The premiere averaged over 4.7 million viewers.
WTF?!?!
Are all these people seriously watching the show?
Or did everyone just leave the house with MTV playing on their TV.
After the premiere, the performance by Mariah Carey resulted in an over 180% increase from the regular ratings in that normal time slot.
Even MTV online received record highs, with an increase of 29% of people going online to stream the episode. MTV.com delivered a staggering 2.2 million streams.
Do people actually watch the show because they think it's real or why?

I started watchin The Hills because I watched Laguna Beach until it ended.I was curious to see what it would be like.I always rooted for Kristen in the L.C.,Stephen,and Kristen love triangle.I have grown to like Lauren,although she could be less "girlscoutish".
Spencer reminds me of that kid from Jerry Maguire.He has a big mushroom head and chicklet teeth.He and Heidi are jus milkin the fifteen.Give it time and people won't even know the ever existed.
i watched. i think people watch b/c it's a more glamorous version of their own lives. also, it may be scripted, but it's somewhat based it reality, and with all the media coverage of the stars of the show, it's like getting an inside glimpse into what's "Really" going on.
but of course. the drama… and lc, with jwahl and brody.. that's all.
I watch it and like it like I would any TV drama, whether it's real or not. If the story line is tampered with, who cares!! It's just a story, but the one thing that makes it just a little more real is that these people really do live in these places and visit these places and really do have honest emotional connections with the cast members. They're not rehearsing line by line or sitting in a created set on the WB, so that part makes it different. So stop sweating if it's real or not, just enjoy it for its entertainment purposes!!
i watch it because it's better than watching all those damn reality competition shows… it's the way todays generation does drama

Recently ive been hearing it's fake.. guess what i don't wanna know!!!! that ruins it for me….i think heidi and spencer part is totally fake for real..they even admitted on an interview that they live with spencer's parents and they just use that house to tape!!! all else im still believen is real…all the way from the laguna days mtv has also admitted if somethin happened and they were not there for it they simply just tape it..anyways cant wait for the 2nd episode…sincerely die hard hills fan **

I don't like Spencer, but I felt bad for him when Heidi was being nasty to him in front of her parents. Who does she think she is anyway? Seriously, I think people watch it for the lifestyle. Come on, everyone of us wants to be rich, young, pretty and living in ritzy Hollywood. Without a care in the world, just time to waste with frivolous "problems". Trendy "job" and seemingly endless sums of money. And sure, there is an element of realness there, like it could be true, so it just might happen to anyone.
