The ratings are in and…..
The season premiers of The Hills was the highest rated telecast for cable all year long so far!
It was also the highest rated episode ever of The Hills.
It even beat out broadcast television channels with the highest ratings for the night!
The premiere averaged over 4.7 million viewers.
WTF?!?!
Are all these people seriously watching the show?
Or did everyone just leave the house with MTV playing on their TV.
After the premiere, the performance by Mariah Carey resulted in an over 180% increase from the regular ratings in that normal time slot.
Even MTV online received record highs, with an increase of 29% of people going online to stream the episode. MTV.com delivered a staggering 2.2 million streams.
Do people actually watch the show because they think it's real or why?

Why did U watch The Hills?
What's not to love about The Hills? Yeah, it's definitely scripted and they should stop trying to sell it as a reality show, but outside of that it has all the makings for perfect entertainment. I love that it's fun and mindless… it's like a slightly-more-real soap opera for this 20-something age group.
I watch the Hills because its people my age and my friends and I all get together to watch and make fun of the situations and how people react because its what happens in your early twenties. Its obviously staged (especially all the Heidi scenes), but oh well. Its better than watching The Real World. The Hills is the Real World of the new millenium.
i am totally addicted to this show .. it's fake but who cares! it's a good story to follow.

I fawkin LOVE the Hills, just like I loved Laguna Beach - the shit is addictive. I'm so sorry that the stories of "Gasp! It's not REALLY reality!" surfaced and has caused you to mock this show hard ever since, but it really is fun to watch. Sitcoms and dramas aren't real, so why so pissed that re-do scenes on this show? Just because it is labeled "reality" tv? Well who labeled it that? Do you hear MTV advertising "please watch our REALITY show "The Hills"? No, you don't.
We could mock you for liking all these horrible, gay bands that you are always gushing about that no one ever listens to, but we don't (well sometimes)
Just face the fact PEOPLE LIKE WATCHING and quit being a cliche Perez.
WE WATCH THE HILLS BECAUSE WE ALL WANT TO WATCH HEIDI FAIL IT LIFE. ITS ENTERTAINING TO SEE HER SAD AND PATHETIC ATTEMPTS TO FOOL AMERICA INTO THINKING SHE IS HAPPY AND SPENCER TREATS HER WELL. ALMOST AS SAD AND PATHETIC AS HER MUSICAL CAREER IF YOU COULD EVEN CALL HER WAILING THAT.
I watch The Hills because it is funnier than any sitcom on TV. Heidi and Spencer make me laugh so hard cuz they are SOOOOOOO LAME!!! But I do like the Fashion in the show and I like the Drama cuz it makes me happy thats not my life!!
its a relatable show. everything these women go through you can relate on. its just refreshing to know that things we go through they go through as well.
The only reason why ppl watch this show is cuz it's fake. I don't watch it anymore cuz it's pratically a soap opera. There are way better things on TV then this garbage.

What a great question..why do people watch this show? I think it is because it is like taking a sedative because the characters are so vapid and devoid of anything meaningful.
Viewers are probably drawn into and intrigued by the sheer shallowness on all levels that drives this show.
It is existentialism at its finest moment. Subsistance …on the lowest common denominator.
we watch because the drama is fun! its obviously not real, but its good tv!
I was reading online that Lauren makes around $25K PER EPISODE of this show and the other girls around $10-$15K, holy crap, no wonder they keep doing it and trying to create more drama/publicity so they can stay on…….

it's a trainwreck. i know it's fake. they are bad "actors" but for some reason it's so ridiculous i just have to watch. i also kind of like to watch LC navigate all the bitchyness (i know she can be a bitch sometimes too…) but man has she had some sucky friends, and she always makes it through.
I wached it cuz my mom was like u can wach tv while she was wachin the Bachelor they was nothin else on so I was like ok I'm wachin this. I hate Heidi n Spencer though

Why do we watch any other TV drama? I, for one, know that most of the show isn't real .. but it's still entertaining and most of the episodes have good plotlines.
Even if its fake I'm gonna watch it b/c we love drama… were people and we will always love drama…
I watch because of teen vogue and the fashion. That was a dream episode for me. Working for teen vogue, going to Paris, wearing beautiful clothes (not being the biggest idiot EVER like Lauren)… that aspect of the show is great. Everything else… especially Heidi and Spencer makes me want to barf therefore I mute the tv to block the flow of rehearsed crap coming from their mouths.
B/c it is like watching a car accident…you just can't look away.
Cause it is ridonkulous and makes me feel less ridiculous…..
its fun to watch stupid girls navigating glamorous settings. fake is often fabulous, respectfully. besides its like a miny mind vacation with pretty girls as the characters. no real thinking needed just labels and drama

I'm obsessed with The Hills! Even after reading all your postings about how it's so fake and staged…i'm hooked! Love the "drama" and love LO!! We need to see more of Lo. Lo and Whitney…they are my faves. I even got pinkberry with fruity pebbles just cuz Lo got that during an episode last season.

I watch it because I secretly love the drama (even if it is fake). I also like to look at what they have on. Lauren Conrad is a huge fashion inspiration to me, so I see what she's wearing and try to make that hapen in my closet for the best price (that still looks good!).

who cares if it's fake? We watch fictional shows all the time and don't complain that it is fake. Its interesting and addicting. Thats why I watch. Plus I do think that SOME of it is real, however small amount, and I like trying to figure out which parts that is.
I enjoy laughing at other people's stupidity! .. Although, the show isn't real I love the drama .. girls love drama especially since I don't have any going on in my life its juicy!!
