Man jailed for microwaving baby
A jury in Texas has sentenced a man to 25 years in prison for severely burning his two-month-old daughter in a microwave oven last year.
The jury rejected Joshua Mauldin's defence that he was insane when he placed his daughter Ana in the oven.
Prosecutors said Mauldin had a history of violence, lying about being mentally ill and was angry about his marriage.
Ana, now aged one, suffered second and third-degree burns to her face and left side and required two skin grafts.
Part of her left ear had to be amputated.
Her foster mother, Heather Croxton, told the court of the painful daily treatments Ana has had to undergo since being left in the microwave for up to 20 seconds.
"There is no excuse for your actions and I hate that one day you will be set free and allowed to move on with your life while Ana continues to pay for your actions," she said.
Mauldin's lawyer, Sam Cammack, said his client would not get the treatment he needs for mental illness in prison.
He's pretty obviously mentally ill, meaning that he didn't know what he was doing when he did it. It's extremely sad, but this whole 'eye for an eye' attitude that everyone has isn't going to help anything… answering violence with violence is just reaffirming that violence is acceptable to other people who might then commit crimes in the future. I say send him to a mental facility and keep him there, so that he is no longer a danger to the public or himself.

Re: inyourdefense – Your idea to send him to a mental facility is not a good one. He should not be placed in a facility with a vulnerable population like this who require care. HE is a criminal. Please understand that mentally ill people should not be lumped together. He is a criminal. Why should other people who are there to be treated for mental illness and the families who support them have to tolerate an individual like this.

This happened in my town. Both parents are sickening. I couldn't even stand to read about it, it is so disgusting. To top it all off– When the police were interviewing the dad, the mom asked if she could speak to him privately. They honored her request. She proceeded to give him oral sex after she knew what he did to her baby. Thank God neither of them will ever see the baby again. In the newspaper today, it was reported that the foster mother admonished the dad in court yesterday because when Ana (the baby) is 13, she will have to be dealing with his parole hearings and trying to keep him in jail instead of dealing with teenage issues. She went on to explain that Ana will for sure have normal teenage issues, but mostly will probably be worried about her scars and how to use her hair to cover the area where her amputated ear used to be. These parents are real sickos. May they both rot in hell.

i live here in houston where this happened. on the news this morning, right after they told his sentence, there was another story of a man here shaking his baby to death during a bath, because….the kid got into dog shit on the floor. #1 - WHY WAS THERE DOG SHIT ON THE FLOOR????? I cant even listen to the news inthe morning because it upsets my daughter! FUCKED UP!

It is difficult to differ between actually mentally ill and one sick son of a bitch (or faking someone out- those sickos can be really smart). If you make the mistake of sending the sick son of a bitch to a mental institution, you take the chance of him getting out or escaping and doing it again or worse!! What if it was your child?
You know it's people like him that really makes me mad. There are a lot of people out there that are unable to have kids. If you don't want the child or don't want to take care of it, give it to someone who does. There is no excuse for what he did!

I live in Galveston County where all this took place. His wife was ordered to be at court and failed to. There is now a warrent out for her arrest. They think she is in virgina. Galveston county's D-A are hard asses and so is the judge. They want life in prison. If you want updates on this I can let you know. This is so sad. What is up with the county? Clara Harrison, The lady who killed her 5 kids, finding a baby on the country road. Is it the water or what. Needless to say I am staying away from it.
