I need to write this.
I've been traveling alone in Japan for the better part of three weeks now, and It's been so remarkable an experience for me that I can't book a ticket home yet. I haven't spoken very much out loud these days, but I've been thinking to myself in what feels like surround sound. I can see so many things clearly, and feel so connected to myself and the world around me that I need to share the perspective with you.
I'm already aware that when I sing, say or write anything, 50 percent of the response will be in support of it and the other 50 will want to discount it. This blog, though, is directed to 100 percent of people reading it. If my blog truly does have any cultural effect, then it should be used for more than just pictures of sneakers and funny youtube videos. (If you don't think my blog has any effect, than you can't by definition be reading this right now and therefore don't have to respond to it in any way. Isn't that tidy?)
What I'm about to write isn't about fame or success or celebrity or the media. That's my business.
This is about us all.
This is about a level of self consciousness so high in my generation, that it's actually toxic.
This is about the girl in her bedroom who poses in front of the camera she's awkwardly holding in her outstretched hand. She'll take a hundred photos until coming up with one she's happy with, which inevitably looks nothing like her, and after she's done poring over images of herself, will post one on her myspace page and then write something like " I don't give a f*ck what you think about me. "
This is about the person trying out for American Idol, who while going off about how confident they are that they were born ready to sing in front of the world, are trembling so badly they can hardly breathe.
This is about me, the guy who walks through a throng of photographers into a restaurant like he's Paul Newman, but who leaves a "reject" pile of clothes in his closet so high that his cleaning lady can't figure out how one man can step into so many pairs of pants in a week.
This is about a young guy who maintains a celebrity blog that subsists on tearing other people down but who has wrestled with a lifelong battle for acceptance as a gay man.
This is about us all. Every one of us. Who all seem to know deep down that it's incredibly hard to be alive and interact with the world around us but will try and cover it up at any cost. For as badass and unaffected as we try to come off, we're all just one sentence away from being brought to the edge of tears, if only it was worded right. And I don't want to act immune to that anymore. I took the biggest detour from myself over the past year, since I decided that I wasn't going to care about what people thought about me. I got to the point where I had so much padding on that, sure, I couldn't feel the negativity, but that's because I couldn't feel much of anything. And I think I'm done with that.
I'm not the first person to admit we're all self conscious, Kanye was. But what I want to do is to shed a little light on why we're all in the same boat, no matter the shape of the life we lead: because every one of us were told since birth that we were special. We were spoken to by name through a television. We were promised we could be anything that we wanted to be, if only we believed it and then, faster than we saw coming, we were set loose into the world to shake hands with the millions of other people who were told the exact same thing.
And really? Really? It turns out we're just not all that special, when you break it down. Beautifully unspectacular, actually. And that truth is going to catch up with us whether we want to run from it or not. The paparazzo following me to the gym ain't gonna be Herb Ritts and the guy he's following ain't gonna be Bob Dylan. It's just a matter of how old you are once you embrace that fact. And for me, 30 sounds about right.
What now, then? I can only really say for myself: Enjoy who I am, the talents and the liabilities. Stop acting careless. In fact, care more. Be vulnerable but stay away from where it hurts. Read. See more shows. Of any kind. Rock shows, art shows, boat shows. Create more art. Wear hoodies to dinner. Carry a notebook and hand it to people when they passionately recommend something and ask them to write it down for me.
Root for others.
Give more and expect the same in return, but over time.
Act nervous when I'm nervous, puzzled when I don't know what the hell to do, and smile when it all goes my way. And never in any other order than that.
And when it's all over, whether at the end of this fabulous career or of this life, which I hope takes place at the same time, I should look back and say that I had it good and I made the most of it while I was able. And so should you.

Perez is a hypocrite, and writes on his blog things like be a good mother & put the kids first, then he bashes 12 year olds and grandmothers for doing nothing wrong just being with their family. We are all hypocrites too because we get on his site and make him more famous. I think we just all like the fact he says whats on his mind and doesnt care what people thinks (or pretends to, as JM said) I think it's time that we all realize who were are making money for and start putting it towards someone who does good and not spread hate like Perez.
Perez, I adore you, but he's right. Actually, though long, I found this entire piece honest and insightful. It's nice for a celebrity to reveal his vulnerable side like that.

I don't know what makes me think that out of 600+ comments mine will be read… maybe that self-absorbed bit where I think I'm special and original, just like everyone else.
Anyhow, I agree with what he said. I read the whole thing, and I say kudos to him for how he represents himself. Too many young celebs today can be described exactly how he says and wouldn't be able to think up such ideas, much less portray them so eloquently.
Also, I definitely think that bold section could be about you. But, I don't think it was a put down or criticism. Actucally, I think that would be exactly the opposite of the message that he is trying to get across. He even spoke about how he is against this judgemental/self-conscious mentality and yet outed himself for being so used to acting in such a fashion. I don't think that he is criticising for it so much as acknowledging it in himself and all around him.

Usually I don't care much about John Mayor, and I love you, Perez! However, I give major props to him for writing this. This time I don't agree with you. Although it's cool to see recent pictures and know what everyone is up to, it just seems like the competitive edge and negativity is becoming more and more visible. I love to check your website and check out the show. But, I would enjoy it a lot more without the negativity! It's fun to hear about the everyday dramz of certain pop-tarts, but to an extent. I couln't give 2 shits about LiHohan or PotatoHead Willis, and your opinions are also clear, but look how much press they get. Negative press is still press, and they still have (albeit somewhat lackluster) careers as a result.
Very long story short.. I love you, but you are only proving his point!

If you had a brain at all you would realize the lack of self absorbency you claim there is in this blog. You would see the vulnerability of a real human being, accepting and admitting his flaws. I bet other countries have a better sense of self, and don't have that need to have to be accepted by everyone else, or live to others' expectations. Smoking? Probably some good green that makes him shut up and not concentrate on anything besides himself and his thoughts. We all should probably follow his lead and take some time out. I'll admit Perez, being able to take the focus off of my self-consciousness and judge others is liberating, but it isn't very progressive. John simply is gaining some wisdom. This is one of the best things I have read in a long time. As much as it may hurt Perez to read this, it doesnt seem at all inaccurate. He spoke the truth about you Perez, and you can't handle it. Which is EXACTLY what he's saying. He's not bashing you, he's telling the truth. The best you can come up with is blackmailing him? I thought you were a more decent person. I get ribbing on celebrities, because they throw themselves out there for our love and hate, and it's been your job for quite some time to bring that to the masses, but seriously? I enjoyed his blog. He usually remarks humorously on popular culture, but it doesn't really make him a self-obsessed person, because this is ONE reflective blog bringing some perspective to its readers.

he's right. sorry guys but he is. And Perez, if you say that you have never had issues finding acceptance as a gay man, you're either lying to the world or to yourself. That doesn't mean that being gay is in any way, shape, or form wrong, but it does mean that there are a lot of loud and foul mouthed individuals out there who honestly believe that it is. If you've never had a wrench or a pang of self doubt or remorse while listening to the hatefull things people say, than you are more than human. And from a psycological standpoint, people who feel bad, or have been hurt by others, are usually the first ones to react by putting other people down. It's a form of self protection. Re: k – I'm sorry, my dear, but you may be an idiot. Being famous doesn't make you happy. It doesn't make you immune to critisism, and in fact for a certain type of individual (ahem, britney spears) the constant scrutany can be incredably damaging. People are people and we ALL struggle with the "am I pretty enough, smart enough, likeable enough" thing from time to time, but the cool thing is to cover it up and pretend we don't care. I've been a pretty loyal visitor to your site, Perez, but this is shedding light on what kind of person you are; to put down someone for exposing their own humanity so eloquently and poignantly and, what's more blackmail them with some cheap shot we ALL can guess isn't true… pathetic. Taking you out of my favorites for good.

Perez– think it's funny that everything John says its cutesy and funny, until he says something true that hits home with you. Then he's suddenly "self-indulgent."
It is obvious that Mario Lavanderia (aka: Perez Hilton), looks "gayer" than "gay", however, has he ever "admitted" (in print, or interviews, or on this site), that he IS gay? (aside from his stupid name, pictures and "self proclaimed" " QUEEN of all media", I've never read anything to the effect (or in this case FACT), that he admits (or denies) to being gay. I honestly don't know. DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW (to his admitting or denying of this)?

That wasn't rambling, Perez, it was beautiful, honest and caring. John Mayer's emotional intellence, intellectual rationale and recognition of his vulnerability is an inspiring example to our generation. Kudos, John!
What I feel is important about this revealing blog is the honesty and awarenesss of what I for one experience and can you imagine say nicole kidman or beyonce ( both huge stars) admitting their natural self-doubts, fears, vulnerabilities ?. They seem too duped by their own made up special image of themselves to be even aware of the courage of revealing a rawness and a true fragility.
That was beautifully written. I don't read it as self-indulgent at all! It speaks to everyone on a personal level. I completely understand his point. Don't worry what others think about you because in THE END what does their opinion really mean. Always be true to yourself. As for his reference to you PH, I believe he's just proving his point that we ALL are self-conscious.
