I've been to Turkey twice, however never to Istanbul (which is not the real Turkey anyway, as everyone says), and all you get is about 100 sleazy Turkish men wanting to get a piece of you on every corner and they make fun of you or even yell at you if you don't buy something or don't dance with them in clubs(i.e. sleep with them in their tiny brains). I lived in Turkey for awhile, it was about 15 years ago, but remember it like it was yesterday. There is anti-american sentiment there..so you I had to be careful…I'm sure that is even worse now since the invasion of Iraq.
People were pretty nice for the most part..I wished that I knew more Turkish when I went there..but only knew a little - but many of them spoke English so it was good.
The pastry shops were amazing and had the best pastries ever!
I also loved Dolma - rice and currants wrapped in grape leaves and soaked in olive oil. Breakfast was olives…fresh bread from the street vendors that came in front of the apartment every morning, and goat cheese, which was soaked in water over-night to take out the saltiness. It was great and healthy.
They also used to take pumpkins and slice them up and boil them in sugar and then you eat them cold. It was really tasty too! Each city has their own traditional yogurt that they make - truly yummy!
They had all the old american cars there that they had fixed up and they looked like new! That was fantastic to see.
The Grand Bazaar was so amazing - a virtual labyrinth of shops large and some as small as a closet. You could find anything you wanted there and haggling the price was expected and fun to do.
The mosques were beautiful - the Blue Mosque - Hagia Sofia…all just incredible architecture and beautiful ceramic tiles throughout - all hand painted. The Topkapi palace was beautiful - it is a museum now with so much history. Eating fish and seafood in restaurants ouside on the Bosforus was enchanting and wonderful food. Ouzo with a little water in it…I got so drunk there…LOL! Watching the HUGE Russian freighters going thru the Bosforus strait.. So many nice people and great times.
Just a word of advice for all. It is better to try to love the people from other countries…find the good, not the bad. There is more than enough bad in the world and we are bombarded with it each day. Make peace with people…Let the politicians fight each other - don't give in to the hatred - we can make the world a better place if each of us tries a little harder to do so instead of fighting and war.
