At Least This Is Some Progress

wenn1769919.jpg

On Friday, President Communist Dictator Raul Castro said that he would begin allowing ordinary Cubans to use cellphones.

This is the first official announcement of the lifting of a major restriction in Cuba.

Cellphone use in Cuba is a luxury usually reserved for only those who are communist or work for the government. Up until now, Cubans have only been able to get cellphones by having foreigners sign the contracts in their names. And those that even had cellphones, were in the very small minority.

Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba S.A., (ETECSA), Cuba's telecommunications monopoly announced they would allow the general public to use the cellphone by agreeing to sign prepaid contracts using Cuban Pesos.

The Cuban government currently controls over 90% of the economy in which the average monthly salary is about 408 Cuban Pesos, a little bit less than $20.

Yes, $20 a month!!!

But, of course, a program in convertible Pesos will probably ensure that most Cubans will not be able to afford the cellphone service.

Baby steps at least. Though it's doubtful Cuba will get out of it's poverty anytime soon. Instead of giving your people cellphones, why don't you try feeding them instead????

you are so uninformed. Get a backbone and instead of being so hateful turn it around and do some good. I am a doctor here in th usa and practice privately and perform surgery in the local hospital. I provide free treatment toover one half of my patients. In addition to helping this country, just this year I have been to Panama to the San Blas Islands to help and Malawi, Africa. Get out in the world and educate yourself.

you are probably a great person but your are really ignorant. Don't speak for a country that you have never visited. Toilet paper is a priveledge there outside the resorts which are owned and run by other countries such as Spain. These resorts kick back money to Cuba. People are starving and risking their lives daily to escape their country.

Re: Karen Zebra – right, and I'm sure poor people are poor because they are lazy. Capitalism works because it depends upon the sweat and labor of the working class to sustain the rich. Capitalism works because it creates a class divide. The "American dream" is attainable for those who already have their foot in the door. Honestly, it doesn't matter what you or I think, and it definitely doesn't matter what the United States thinks. You preach Republican ideals (small government, do it yourself) but you are forgetting a MAJOR Republican ideology, that myself, as a liberal also agree with. NON-INTERVENTION and ISOLATIONALIST policies. It is not our place to say that Cuba should be a Democratic country, which is really just a great idea in theory. You should be more concerned about China than Cuba. eeesh.

Me duele ver a mi familia, a mi publo sufrir injustamente. There's no "indigentes" there's no homeless people, and their kids are healthy and fed. If there's one thing America and the world should learn from Cuba is to at least cover the main needs a country may have, medicine, education and food… Every Cuban has that… and I say this as a Cuban who left ilegally. So watch your words… and above all inform yourself before miss-judging and missinforming.

The one who didn't provide healthcare and lived in the lap of luxury while his people starved. I guess you're descended from one of those Cubans that had it good during those times, while almost everyone else suffered.

    338

    Kimberly, shut up.

I live in Miami too, and like all immigrants Cubans have to be given time to adjust. Funny how the new third-generation is already having difficulty speaking Spanish natively, whereas you're angry that the "Cubans" (probably you don't know the difference between one, and the many other Hispanics in Miami) are ungrateful to this country — when they have fallen in every war the USA has participated in, since 1961. For 1 million emigres, they far outnumber all the other Hispanics in college graduates, and successful entrepreneurs than ALL the other Hispanics in the US.

Miami would be a third-rate city if it weren't for them, and I'm not very partial to that Cuban griteria either, and hardly an apologist.

I just hate when racism raises its ugly, unknowing head under the veil of complaint.

There are actually many Cubans dying in prison right now because they fought against the government. The reason you don't hear about it is because the government has complete control over the information that enters as well as leaves the country. They would grabs guns if there WERE guns to grab. If you didn't know Cubans can't import anything, less yet guns. Get your head out of the clouds this isn't some Hollywood movie. It's clear to me that you've never had anything to fight for. Re: Kimberly Smith

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? Let us take a moment and truly analyze what you're saying. There are bad Cubans sure, there are bad people from every country. However, there are complaining Mexicans hiding in churches, NOT learning English, marching around American cities claiming that Americans stole the US from them. The streets of Los Angeles are infested with their gangs as they kill, rape and abuse the innocent. You could talk about all the different South Americans, millions of immigrant groups and you will always find bad people, not learning English, cheating the system. There are bad Americans too. Murderers, sociopaths, thieves, rapists you name it. There are also many lazy Americans that sit all day and stuff their fat faces. There are Americans that burn their flag, attack buildings in Oklahoma, kidnap, speak ill about their country. So what is your point? You've met "bad" Cubans I'm sorry. I am Cuban, I speak English fluently so do my parents, my siblings, many of our Cuban friends. I wasn't born in America. I don't ask for welfare because I don't need it. I have a college education which I earned by working hard in school. So again WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? I'm glad you love your country so do I. I'm not lazy, I'm not apathetic, and I am most definitely NOT a slob. You don't know me and there is no way in hell that you know every Cuban out there. Next time think before you type.

Actually, the majority of us LOVE this country more than we love our own and owe this country a lot for allowing us to stay here and bust our asses to better ourselves.

What we don't like, however, are prejudice, ignorant, fools like you who have no clue what you are talking about and hate on us because we pretty much BUILT Miami.

I'm sure you're not old enough to know this but in the 60's when Cubans started migrating to Miami… it was nothing but SWAMP and now thanks to us… Miami is famous for it's delicious Cuban food and gorgeous Cuban-American women (amongst other things).

Yep, that must be it… you're an ugly white chick got her first taste of some Latin lovin' and was probably dropped like a bad habit!

A bit of a hater, are you? Well, hate on! You don't have to deal with us… if we bother you that much, you can either ignore us OR build yourself a ship and sail your ass back to England because in case you didn't know this… YOU'RE AS MUCH OF AN IMMIGRANT AS WE ARE!

In order to have anything here you must work for it and I can understand if you're referring to THEM… but I will have you know that my parents came in 1980 and since then have done everything from picking tomatoes to cleaning toilets to eventually having their own business.

They worked their @$$es off to give their 3 kids everything they wanted and more and I'm pretty sure I can say the same about the majority of Cubans who have been here for years. Re: SP – if you are standing in america and want to get to cuba what direction do you have to travel? i am pretty sure it is south, therefore south america. i really have no combat experience you are right, but the reason is that the founders of this country did a lot of fighting for me. cubans are just running to miami and hangin bangin and slangin. the few that have tried to fight things are to be commended but i am not talking about them.

I left Cuba myself some 4 years ago, and I can tell you — LIES. To all of you who visit Cuba and have only good things to report… Remember that as tourists, you get a biased view of Cuba — even if you travel "independently," government restrictions are in place such that you see some censorship, but are overwhelmed by the "education" and "health care."

The Cuban people are hungry, overworked, not properly educated, and often resort to in-home health care because the health care for native Cubans is grossly sub-par. Thank you all for your interest in this issue, but please see that as tourists, you will never see the Cuba that Cubans experience.

Gracias, Perezito, por reportar sobre las condiciones verdaderas en Cuba. Y para las proximas navidades — pasa por Miami otravez y recoge turron! :)

Re: bathog – The reason Canadians should not be spending money in Cuba is because it does not go to the Cubans it goes to the Castros. Basically it is the equivalent of Canadians giving money to Sudam and his sons . I think Canadians are proud of the fact that they can go to Cuba. They see this as an example of their neutrality. It makes me sick. I think the 70's and Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and his wife Maggie contributed to this philosophy. What the f are Canadians thinking?

My God, you absolute unrepentant witch — ALL IMMIGRANTS have difficulty adopting the new language of their country. Do you think Jewish immigrants, Italian immigrants, or even German immigrants spoke English instantly?

Remember Rick Sanchez of Channel 7 (of Belkys Nerey fame). HIS KIDS don't speak a lick of English, and have to have their grandma's Spanish translated to them. A famous example so you can get this through your thick racist noggin.

Oh, by the way, if you want to meet real Cubans, don't stick around Little Havana. Those are rafters who arrived yesterday, comparatively. The real Cubans are long since gone from Little Havana. Head to Coral Gables, dimtard.

P.S.: Whatever: I hope one day the full impact of your ridiculous statement will make you blanch in horror. Trading "free" health care (which comes from taxes, or in the case of Cuba, courtesy first of Soviet now Venezuelan subsidies) for freedom. If I had one wish for you, it's for you to live there but one day without the creature comforts and right to blab all over the internet that America gives you. Ingrate.

HAVE YOU EVEN BEEN TO CUBA PEREZ?

Your parents may be Cuban, but you, sir, are American. Unless you've actually been there, and not just to some all inclusive in Veradero, then I suggest you keep your judgements about Cuba and its people to yourself, Perez.

Usually i would not have anything to say about posts but this kits close to home. Cuba is only sold as a bad place because they are communist and that is not alwas bad. Not because people disagree with our way of life means that they are bad. Why not look at the good things? Cuba's education rate is almost 100% and they are offered free healthcare. It is also unfair to calculate their earnings in american dollars because the cost of living is different. It is also wrong to assume that people go hungry in Cuba because that is not true!

    TO kimberlyisstillstupid:
MANY MANY of the cubans in Miami have been here for 40+ years (and STILL don't/want to speak ENGLISH). Maybe you should haul yourself south of N. Miami and experience your culture for what it really is. I have FIRST HAND knowledge of the DISTAIN that cubans hold for AMERICANS!!! I have FIRST HAND knowledge of the cheating of our system. When my ancestors came to this country the FIRST thing that they did was LEARN the LANGUAGE…it certainly DID NOT take them 40 years.

The US is south of Canada and Greenland and *gasp* they're all part of North America too. Clearly you slept through geography and the let-me-think-before-I-type-and-pick-up-a-map class!!
