He's No Reese!

Filed under: Ryan Phillippe > Film Flickers

Ryan Phillipe's new movie, Stop-Loss, bombed at the box office in America this weekend.

Disastrously!

The film is on track to take in just a little over $4 million Friday through Sunday.

That must hurt!

The movie 21, on the other hand, did big business. That film, starring Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey, is expected to take in a surprising $22+ million.

GOOD! Glad the movie bombed. It is another hate-America blame-America leftist piece of garbage thats sole purpose is to stir up hatred for Bush and the military. The fact that it bombed proves that that this kind of demagoguery does not work with the American public. Stop-loss can be a necessary part of a war and the majority of those that it happens to execute their obiligation with pride, honor and patriotism. Ryan I still think you're hot!!!

I for one will not pay money to see any military-themed movie put out by Hollywood these days. I already know the message they will try to deliver, and I'm tired of it. No thanks. I can watch the Communist News Network any day of the week and get the same take.

It's not that the film is bad, it's just that this is a time when Americans cannot deal with the war anymore. We have turned away from the news, from documentaries, from films of the war. It is all just too painful for the average American to face right now. I don't believe this has anything to do with Ryan Philipe or the quality of the film; it has to do with the subject matter. The people going to these movies are the family of people over in Iraq and it's just too close to home.

  11. A US Marine says – reply to this

    111

Its stupid. You sign up for 8+ years when you join the service. Its on the contract you sign. SO, In essence, the movie is about a retard who didnt read his contract.

  12. US Marine says – reply to this

    112

#54… your answer was my favorite. I probably couldnt have said it better.

Stop loss doesnt and didnt affect everyone. It was something most of us knew about, too. Its on your contract when you join that they can call you back. Duh.

None of the films (even the one with Meryl Streep) that have to do with the Iraq war have done well. It is too soon and too raw to do these movies yet. Think about, if you have a son or daughter over there………..you only want to hear about the progress. You can't bear to hear the rest. No one will go to these movies Hollywood! All the vietnam movies came out well after the actual war…………they did far better. God bless our men and women in Iraq! Grant them progress and finality so they can come home.

    Re: Katie @11

Yes Katie, Reese's last two films bombed too, but if you're Perez and shilling for Reese you forget about that part. A bit like you forget to mention Paris Hilton can sound like a homophobe.

  17. Yep yep yep says – reply to this

    117

Glad to see peeps have their head mostly screwed on right. Nothing to do with Ryan Phillipe, it's a WAR movie and people are tired of war and tired of thinking. They want to go watch clay dogs and animated mammoths.

Life's depressing enough as it is. You could bring Heath Ledger back and stick him in this film and it wouldn't save it box office wise.

These are just box office returns. Many good films (Shawshank for one) were bombs at the box office but went on to become cult classics.

  18. Courtney says – reply to this

    118

Jim Sturgess was in there too! He did amazing. 21 was definitly worth seeing. :]

That Stop-Loss looks good, but i'll wait until it come out on DVD.

YES, AMERICA ISN'T PERFECT, BUT COMPARED TO THE REST OF THE WORLD, KISS THE GROUND, THANK THE HEAVENS AND ENJOY YOUR FREEDOM THESE BRAVE SOLDIERS PROTECT YOU FROM. HOLLYWOOD, HERE'S A NOTE…STOP MAKING MOVIES THAT YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT EXCEPT YOUR SPIN, AMERICA IS STARTING TO HATE MOVIE COMPANIES AND THEIR DUMB THIRD GRADE LEVEL HICK STARS THAT STAR IN THEM!! YOU HEAR THAT OLIVER STONE???? YOUR NEW MOVIE IS GOING TO TANK!!!!

  21. Franklin says – reply to this

    121

When will Hollywood get it: NOBODY wants to watch movies about Iraq — or movies about U.S. soldiers right now. It doesn't matter if the movie is politically left or right leaning. It's just too depressing of a subject now (because it's still happening on the TV news). People go to the movie theaters to escape reality.

  22. STOP LOSS ROCKS says – reply to this

    122

The movie was frickin' awesome, so I have no clue why it bombed in the box office…

  23. Felix says – reply to this

    123

Perez is an idiot who doesn't know anything how movies are marketed and shown nationwide. Indenpendent films don't get big wide releases like big studio movies do. This movie was only shown in a few hundred theaters compared to a typical Hollywood blockbuster being shown in 4000 theaters. Do the math!!! It's not going to make 20 million like the movie "21" which was probably shown in 3000 theaters. 4 million is respectable for a small movie like "Stop-Loss"

    128

Re: mia – Moron, this film isn't meant to use the war as entertainment. It's meant to bring attention to a very important issue effecting our men and women in uniform. Stop-Loss is more than a movie, it's a statement, and one that every person who gives a shit about the military should watch.

    134

I'm sure this film is good - the reviews I've seen are not bad, though not glowing, and apparently Phillipe delivers an excellent performance - but while filmmakers want to make Iraq war films, the American public simply does not want to see them, as evidenced by the poor box offices of all such films over the past several years. And thus we run headlong into the classic art vs. profit dichotomy. Is it good art if there is no audience?

  35. usmc number 1 says – reply to this

    135

it bombed because of the topic!….nobody wants an anti-war flick…..we are fighting because we should, and should not leave until we finish the job…which we will!!!!!……we are doing the right thing america….stop being such pacifist pussies!….btw obama is a douchebag!

  36. Matt from California says – reply to this

    136

If the movie was not so anti-iraq war, Stop Loss would of made more money. You have to make America feel good. People do not want to see movies of troops killing civilians or soldiers giving up their job of being soldiers.

  37. britegray says – reply to this

    137

Look, it might have done better if it weren't for that DAMN bad Texas accent he was rocking in the commercial. I'M from TEXAS and it pisses me off when actors over exaggerate it and I just can't listen to it and take them seriously in the role of a Texan.
NOTE TO ACTORS: If you can't do the Texas accent right then just forget it and talk however you talk. Otherwise you just sound stupid.
"I honored my contract and I expect the Army to do the same." Quote from the commerical that with his accent sounds ridiculous.

    139

I don't think people are in a mood to see movies about the current war. Seeing/hearing about it every single day in the news is more than enough. In five years, we have lost over 4,000 men — I wouldn't go pay movie prices to be reminded of how sad this all is. Why DON'T we just give peace a chance? War will go on as long as there are people on earth, but this one should be over - at least for Americans. My nephew has been over there 3 times, and goes back again next month, so I have a right to express my opinion.

    143

i went and saw the movie and it was very good! as a military wife, it was very emotional and very real to what happens. Its sad ppl didnt go see it. its a great movie. but i guess some ppl dont want to know whats really going on in the world, most ppl are too ignorant to even care. they think freedom is free.. well sorry kiddies, its not, and young soldiers pay the price for it with their lives while everyone back home is out partying and having a grand ol' time and getting arrested and DUI's, they are getting shot at and watching friends get killed. If you dont know anyone or care for anyone who's in the military, you just dont know or understand. you have no idea of the world we're actually in, or what we go through! WATCH THE MOVIE. it will make you cry like a bitch, but it'll hopefully make you understand at least get a little taste, of military life!

SUPPORT THE TROOPS! BRING THEM HOME!!!

  44. STARLA says – reply to this

    144

Hmm, like how everyone automatically assumes ppl dont want to watch the movie bc they dont want to deal with the war anymore, blah blah blah, how its not the right time for a war movie.. THIS MOVIE WAS THE PERFECT MOVIE AND THE PERFECT TIME! Its about bringing our soldiers home! its about the war that is going on at the moment, that most ppl dont even care about or aknowledge!!! Some ppl joined the military to help and make a difference, not spend years of their life overseas fighting a war that cant and wont ever be won. and only for the soul reason that fucking iraqis and afghans have no balls to rat out whos a good guy and whos a bad guy. i say bomb the fuck out of their countries and let it be over with!!!

Some American's just dont want to deal with the war anymore??? HA

Those "American's" never dealt with the war, these "American's" your talking about probably dont know or care about anyone who is serving overseas, bc if they did, then they would care!!! FUCKING ASSHOLES!!

GUESS WHAT PPL, THERE IS A WAR GOING ON, STOP TRYING TO FORGET IT OR IGNORE IT!!! THATS EVEN WORSE. YOU CAN BE AGAINST IT, THATS FINE, BUT DONT EVER BE ANTI-MILITARY BC THOSE SOLDIERS ARE FIGHTING FOR YOU! THEY ARE SACRAFICING EVERYTHING FOR YOU!!! THEY DONT EVEN KNOW YOU AND THEY ARE WILLING TO DIE FOR YOU! THINK ABOUT THAT!!

SUPPORT THE TROOPS. SUPPORT THE TROOPS. FUCK ALL YOU HATERS! IF YOU DONT STAND BEHIND OUR TROOPS, FEEL FREE TO STAND INFRONT OF THEM!!!!

I saw this movie last night and it was really good. It's just seems that no one wants to see movies about Iraq. The actors were great, all of them. Film makers try to make good stuff, and all you people want is tits and car chases.

GO SEE THIS MOVIE AND GET A CLUE AS TO WHAT YOUR FUCKED UP GOVERNMENT IS REALLY UP TO.

    FUCK YOU GEORGE BUSH!!!!!!!!

  48. rabidparadise says – reply to this

It might have bombed because so many military people are boy-cotting it. It's BS to anyone who really is enlisted. And to 99% of those actually stop-lossed, it's a kick in the teeth.

    149

the real hotness and hero in this movie is amputee actor/athlete Cameron Clapp! he's in the scene with Abbie Cornish, playing pool with his "hook". there is no CG used to create his character - he really is missing both his legs and his right arm! after a night of partying, he was run over by a freight train and his legs and arm were severed. he was only 15. he was told he would never walk again but now he travels the usa and the world to help amputees and medical professionals see what is possible. his greatest honor is being able to visit wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center, and Balboa Navy Hospital. now that is HOT! to learn more about cameron check out his website: www.cameronclapp.com

    150

BTW, this is yet another reason that Perez's 15 minutes is about over. Yea, Ryan is no Reese. He's a serious actor who takes quality parts, even if he doesn't make the huge checks that his bitch X wife makes. He'll be around long after she gets fat and Hollywood sends her packing. She's a butter face anyway.

Also saw 21. Yep, it's good, but a puff peice for sure. Jim Sturgess is super hot, in that young Tom Cruise way, before he got creepy. Kate Bosworth is fugly.

Perez, your are one dumbass no taste moran. Don't even try to comment on movies cause the only ones you like include dudes sucking cock.

  51. Elizabeth says – reply to this

    151

Well God forbid that he choose something based on the quality of its work and content and not on whether it will make 50 bajillion dollars at the box office. I think Ryan is just as talented as Reese. Anyway, it shouldn't be some sort of competition between them. They are two completely different people with their own successful careers overall. I'm usually with you on stuff Perez, but this post really blows!

Just like all anti-war/anti-America films, it flopped. I predicted that as soon as I saw the trailer, and I was right. It had nothing to do with the quality of the film, I bet it was good, but has more to do with the message.

When will Hollywood learn that the public goes to the movies for the story - not the stars! There are very few stars that can make someone go to movie regardless of the plot & storyline and those stars are usually comedic actors like Adam Sandler etc… Most of the time there are 3 or 4 stars that could play in a roll and we would't care!!! Look at movies like 300!!!

Further more, hating the war is not "hating America"–it's hating the corrupt, fucking idiots who got us into this nonsense war in the first place. these shit bags need to be shut down–not only for their homophobia–but mostly for their stupid decisions that will cost soldiers DEATH, DISFIGUREMENT, PTSD, DISMEMBERMENT, AND RADIATION POISONING–and why? Because the political leaders in our country used the war as a sham to receive no-bid contracts. YOU ARE THE ONE WHO HATES AMERICANS AND HAS NO REGARD FOR HOW THEY HAVE SUFFERED…VISIT A VA SOMETIME AND LET THEM TELL YOU FACE TO FACE…IF ANYONE LOVES AMERICA AND THE SOLDIERS THEY WILL BE THE FIRST TO MARCH IN THE STREETS AND DEMAND THE MILITARY COME HOME TO THEIR LOVING FAMILIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By now it is clear that the U.S. invasion of Iraq was a terrible mistake. Nearly, 4,000 U.S. troops have been killed, and more than 58,000 have been wounded, injured, or fallen seriously ill. A further 7,300 troops have been wounded or injured or fallen seriously ill in Afghanistan. One hundred thousand U.S. soldiers have returned from the war suffering serious mental health disorders, a significant fraction of which will be chronic afflictions. Miserable though Saddam Hussein's regime was, life is actually worse for the Iraqi people now. The country's roads, schools, hospitals, homes and museums have been destroyed and its citizens have less access to electricity and water than before the war. Sectarian violence is rife. Iraq's chaos has made the country a magnet for terrorists of all stripes. The notion that invading Iraq would bring democracy and catalyze change in the Middle East now seems like a fantasy. When the full price of the war has been paid, trillions of dollars will have been added to our national debt. Invading Iraq has also driven up oil prices. In these and other ways, the war has weakened our economy. –The Trillion Dollar War, By Joseph E. Stiglitz (winner of Nobel Prize in Economics) and Linda J. I have been looking forward to seeing this movie because Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in it. I was not sure how pretty boy Ryan would carry a movie playing a "tough guy". I must say that I was very pleasantly suprised. He did a great job, as did Joseph, and even more suprisingly, Channing did awesome. It is a subject that more people need to be made aware of and I think it was very tastefully done. Depressing but definately worth seeing.

umm hello, JIM STURGESS, the star of Across the Universe, is also the star of 21 and he is sexy as hell and a great actor! it rocked… but i still want to go see stop loss, i mean with as many hot actors in it as it does it is totally worth it just to watch those hot boys!!!

I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
    Because you're evil
    And you lie
    And if you should die
    I may feel slightly sad
    (but I won't cry)
    Loved and lost
    And some may say
    When usually its Nothing
    Surely you're happy
    It should be this way?
I say "No, I'm gonna kill my dog"
And: "May the lines sag heavy
    And deep tonight XXX"
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
    Because you're evil
    And you lie
    And if you should die
    I may feel slightly sad
    (But I won't cry)
    Loved and lost
    Some people say
    When usually its Nothing
    Surly you're happy
    It should be this way?
    I said "No"
    And then I shot myself
    So, drink, drink, drink
    And be ill tonight
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind

One of my fav movies ever is Cruel Intentions. Can't go wrong with Hot Ryan, good actress and cute Reese and Fierce Buffy all in one film. Loved Loved it. He is such a fine piece of meat. 2 reasons why I think this film isn't doing as great

1- People are getting sick of War movies and War talk and all the War bullshit going around. I am in canada and I am sick of it, Ic an just imagine how annoying it must be in America

2- Fans of Reese and some of Ryan's I am sure, are pissed that he cheated with that bimbo tand led to the divorce and she is in this movie.

As for me, I will mostly go see this movie, but only to stare at Ryan and Channing, I could care less about the movie itself.

I saw both 21 and stop-loss this weekend. Stop-loss was a really great movie, kept me intrigued, had laughter + tears + suspense.
21 = SUCKED. I am a big fan of Jim Sturgess and Kevin Spacey. It was boring, did not deliver on the glitz and glamour it promised. Too predictable.
I think Stop-loss is not the type of movie people expect. It's not anti-government and it's not a big blockbuster. It'll do well with the people that see it..maybe once word of mouth gets around, less people will go see 21

One reason for that could be because there are still many of us who can't bare to watch that movie, I can't even watch the previews. I know to many people over there including my boyfriend. Its a movie I will probably not be able to watch for a long time.

The movie was not given a WIDE release. It was only shown in 1200 theaters, 21, and Horton both in almost 3000 theaters. It actually, had the 3rd best PER SCREEN AVERAGE for the WEEKEND. You may want to CHECK YOUR FACTS BETTER, BEFORE POSTING PEREZ.

Saw this on Sat night, whoever wants to talk smack about it is more f'd up than the "war" itself. I feel horrible for all those soldiers over there, after seeing this it really hit me hard. Anyone who wants to mock it should do a tour over there, maybe that'll change their minds.

movie was insane!! everyone needs to see it! it was a truth that needed to be told. i can't explain the greatness of this film. totally not what i expected. i expected hotty ryan without his shirt on for a hour 53 minutes. i left with a huge appreciation for the military!

I wouldn't expect you to understand this, Perez, since you're a man of the people, but box office receipts are not necessarily the best measure of a movie. I actually saw the flick and thought it was really good. And Ryan Phillipe can ACT.
