He continues to disappoint us!
Just when you thought reports of Barack Obama and his controversial minister Rev. Jeremiah Wright were over, a new individual appears.
Now news of Obama's relationship with homophobe Rev. James T. Meeks has been revealed, and it's very upsetting.
Rev. Meeks is an Illinois state senator and serves as the pastor of the 22,000 member Salem Baptist Church in Chicago, where Obama frequently campaigned back in 2003 when running for Senate.
Rev. Meeks has been described as someone in which Obama seeks spiritual counsel from, according to an article printer in the Chicago Sun Times. He will even serve as an Obama delegate at the 2008 Democratic convention in Denver.
Rev. Meeks has served on Obama’s exploratory committee for the presidency and was even listed on Obama's campaign website as one his ‘influential black supporters’. The Chicago Sun Times also reported that both Rev. Meeks and Obama share a history of receiving substantial campaign contributions from the indicted real estate "criminal" Tony Rezko.
Aside from numerous other reports linking the two together, the real issue is the character of Rev. Meeks, who is known for his racially charged remarks and homophobic ways.
In a 2006 sermon, Rev. Meeks stated, "We don't have slave masters. We got mayors. But they still the same white people who are presiding over systems where black people are not able, or to be educated. You got some preachers that are house niggers. You got some elected officials that are house niggers. And rather than them trying to break this up, they gonna fight you to protect this white man." He later defended that sermon during an interview with a Chicago CBS 2 reporter.
Not to mention Rev. Meeks homophobic ways are well noted. A 2007 newsletter from the Southern Poverty Law Center named Rev. Meeks one of the "10 leading black religious voices in the anti-gay movement."
The newsletter cites him as a key member of Chicago's ‘Gatekeepers’ network (an interracial group of evangelical ministers who strive to erase the division between church and state) and “a stalwart anti-gay activist… [who]… has used his House of Hope mega-church to launch petition drives for the Illinois Family Institute (IFI), a major state-level ‘family values’ pressure group that lauded him last year for leading African Americans in ‘clearly understanding the threat of gay marriage.'”

Let Obama speak for himself! Just because he talks with these people does not mean that this is how he himself thinks. And while I understand that the fact that he seeks council from this man, I would hope that we would all look at Obama's record rather than the quotes of people he associates with. I am sure that he associates with many pro-gay people as well but no one is publishing those quotes in support of the gay community.
If you read his book, Dreams From my Father, you will see that Obama is not really that religious himself, but rather has close connection with the religious community (specifically in Chicago) to assist him in his work as a community organizers.
Also, isn't it possible that Obama seeks Meeks' guidance on issues other than that of homosexual or race relations? This is just one aspect of this man (one that I strongly disagree with) but it does not mean that he doesn't have interesting things to say on other issues.
I am not condoning what Meeks or any other homophobic or racial comment made by any other person but I would hope that in electing the future leader of the free world we would examine the man himself and not his relations.
And furthermore, couldn't it be argued that it says more about Obama that he can be in communication with people like this and still be in support of the gay community? I think it's ridiculous that people say he's racist….he has a white mother! And grew up with white grandparents! And his black father was a dissapointment to him! (Although he does strongly identify with the black community…he is not anti-white). I hope to have a president who can communicate with ALL people even if I disagree with what those people are saying and then LEAD the country through his own vision. It is important for the future president to understand the problem, listen to the biggots, the racists and what have you and try to understand them so that they can best know how to change their mindsets.

It frightens me when leaders have religious "advisers" at all. Looking at you IRAN. We've got a president who doesn't believe in evolution……so Obama's crazy-ass screaming preacher friends are more of the same. Can we please have some regular smart people to chose from, and not have our POLITICAL leaders have to always be cozying up to the Billy Graham, Rev Wright, Jerry Swaggart crowd for chrissakes?
