Turner: Global Warming Will Cause Mass Cannibalism, Insurgents Are Patriots

Interviewed Tuesday for Charlie Rose's PBS show, CNN founder Ted Turner argued that inaction on global warming “will be catastrophic” and those who don't die “will be cannibals.” He also applied moral equivalence in describing Iraqi insurgents as “patriots” who simply “don't like us because we've invaded their country” and so “if the Iraqis were in Washington, D.C., we'd be doing the same thing.” On not taking drastic action to correct global warming:

Not doing it will be catastrophic. We'll be eight degrees hottest in ten, not ten but 30 or 40 years and basically none of the crops will grow. Most of the people will have died and the rest of us will be cannibals.

Turner ridiculed the need for a big U.S. military, insisting “China just wants to sell us shoes. They're not building landing craft to attack the United States,” and “even with our $500 billion military budget, we can't win in Iraq. We're being beaten by insurgents who don't even have any tanks.” After Rose pointed out the Iraqi insurgents “have a lot of roadside bombs that kill a lot of Americans” and wondered “where do you think they come from?”, Turner answered:

I think that they're patriots and that they don't like us because we've invaded their country and occupied it. I think if the Iraqis were in Washington, D.C., we'd be doing the same thing: we'd be bombing them too. Nobody wants to be invaded.

Sounds like a scientific consensus to me!

I really envy those of you who believe in Man-made Global Warming. Life must be terribly…DRAMATIC for you.
Are any of you old enough to remember Y2K? When all the (shudder!) MAN MADE military computers went on the fritz and and emptied the world's missile silos causing the entire planet to go up in a nuclear fireball and leaving the major metropolitan areas of the world in smoking radioactive ruins? When the collapse of the Information Superhighway shut down the world's electrical grids, blackening hospital windows and throwing modern medicine back into the stone age leading to wave after wave of mega-epidemic diseases blanketing the planet? When the sudden failure of computer-controlled food producing, handling and processing equipment obliterated the modern agricultural infrastructure bringing about the death by starvation of billions due to hyper-famine because MAN had become so addicted to power? When swarms of starving post-apocalyptic mutants scavenged through shattered streets where raw sewage bubbled and gushed up from beneath the broken pavements because computers controlling the water reclamation plants serving MAN'S insatiable lust for cheap water had failed?
It was so fuckin' COOL, dude! Like a fuckin' Black Sabbath song!

Brave.. I'm sure many people will detract from that story and call it crazy, but it rang a bell for me. I don't think it's too late, but something big needs done.. Problem is with everyone whining about the economy, we're going to go to greater lengths to provide maximum goods/services, and the environment will be left out. Ugh, doesn't anyone just chill for a minute? We're overheating both the planet and the economy.

I doubt we will become cannibals, but there will be major problems to deal with later if we don't aid global warming.

The ACRIM data shows a slight increase in TSI - the PMOD data shows practically no trend at all. Regardless of which dataset you use, the trend is so slight, solar variations can only have contributed a fraction of the current global warming. There is much deal made of Scafetta 2006 which analyses the ACRIM data and finds 50% of warming since 1900 is due to solar variations. However, the warming from solar influence occured primarily in the early 20th century when the sun showed significant warming. As for the global warming trend that began in 1975, Scafetta concludes "since 1975 global warming has occurred much faster than could be reasonably expected from the sun alone."

    211

Scientists have predicted that the next solar cycle will be a strong one, and the one after that will be a weak one. That's probably what the documentary was talking about.

However, scientists have determined that 80-90% of the warming over the past 30 years has been due to human greenhouse gas emissions, and 0-10% due to the Sun.

I think the best argument the paranoid separatists on this forum made has to do with this guy's cows, which would make Turner a hypocrite. But here your wrong too, really. The guy has a lot of Bison, not cow. They don't burp Methane. They're indigenous to this country and happen to be much better livestock in terms of environmental foot-print.

Perez: It's exactly this business of yours, the trade of gossip and rumor, that's the real culprit here. Yes, I can see how his speculation of the future has its own dangers, but remember-he's not a politician-he doesn't have to make everyone happy with what he says, he can be bound to his convictions and his truth and not feel the pressures of selling out and smiling to the camera.
He was depicting what the world would look like if it was 8 degrees hotter. Nothing would grow, you and I would most likely be dead. He was making a correlation to this environmentally-induced famine to all the political atrocities occurring in the world; the hottest spots literally being the hot spots.

    214

I'm not here to argue under what circumstances people resort to cannibalism-I'd probably be dead before I resorted to cannibalism, but I imagine, by definition, cannibals would probably eat people. And the word Patriot refers to a person who defends their country. You may observe historically that people with a just ideal (like defending one's country or faith) tend to win conflicts despite their opposition's need to test the theory with overwhelming fire-power and a lot of bloodshed. How about the founding of this country? How about the founding of Christianity? And I don't suppose you want to argue that we actually won the Vietnam War? What we don't like about suicide bombers is that they blow up innocent, civilian people. We have a just cause too which eventually we will win. And I think we'll win when we all discover better ways of utilizing our time. Look, we don't need violence anymore-we just need to live our lives like our lives depended on it. Despite our jousts, our search for honor, our claims to sacred physical and intellectual property, the earth can flick us of her back any time she likes. I think the environmental pressures are exacerbated by our insistence in playing things out violently. And by "we", I mean the human race.

Even if some people think he is talking out of his ass, let's ponder a minute that our future and our childrens' future is clouded by people using too much energy and not recycling. Those are 2 simple things everyone can do…..turn your bedroom lights off, recycle your pop cans. (And of course there is a ton of other actions to be taken.)
The world can't last forever w/ all the abuse!! Eventually people will have to adapt to a much different climate.
I think that's what is he trying to say in a more drastic manner.

I saw Ted Turner on Charlie Rose the other night, and after all these years he is even more fascinating. He has got to be the sexiest 70 year old on the planet. What a life.

Few people on this planet are more out of their minds then this idiot, maybe Al Gore. Heres a short list of the crap loons like Ted and Al have foisted on us in the last 40 years:

The oncoming Ice Age, ALAR, Ozone Depletion, Acid rain, the Population bomb, Y2K, now global warming. Whats next?

Shut your fat lying mouths guys. No one with a functioning brain is buying it.

And this Cannibalism…oh holy shit that is unbelievable!!!! when im 50 or 60 i'll ither be dead…or eating someone raw!!!
