Oprah Winfrey plans to dedicate Friday's episode of her daytime TV talker to her beloved Cocker Spaniel, Sophie, who died last month from kidney failure.
That's some serious display of love and devotion. We feel ya, O!
The episode will be investigating abuses at puppy mills. Lisa Ling, the show's special correspondent, called the investigation of these mills "horrific" and "haunting."
The Opes says the show is "for anybody anywhere who loves a dog, has ever loved a dog, or just cares about their basic right to humane treatment."
All of Oprah's dogs were adopted through credible breeders but after seeing Ling's report the daytime chat legend says in the future she would look to adopt from an animal shelter.
"I would never, ever adopt another pet now without going to a shelter to do it. I am a changed woman after seeing this show," she says.

Call me one of those reputable breeders who has barely any litters, tests every single dog I ever produce and their parents for health issues, AND KEEPS THE ONES WHO DONT GET HOMES, including their mother, who by the way is spayed after 2 litters, and sleeps ON MY BED, with my other 5 dogs!!!!!!!!!! Idiot!
Re: Lynne – If you got them from breeders that's not considered adopting them so please don't try to sound like you did a good thing. I'm not saying you're trying to but that's what it seems like when you use the term adopt.

For once, I am glad she's speaking out on this issue. I've been anti-puppy mills for years. Breeders are greedy and evil and irresponsible. I think most of what Oprah puts out is bullshit, but I couldn't agree more with her on this, and knowing her influence, I hope this really makes a difference.
It's about time, Oprah. Half of the world already knows how horrible puppy mills are. Why breed or buy while shelter animals die?

Re: Reputable – I see why their comment made you mad but you have to admit you are a very very very very very rare case. They said what they said because you never see a breeder that actually takes care about their animals and does what they are supposed to. I'm glad you do. Personally I still think it is wrong to breed since the dog population is so out of control and it is so unnecessary to bring more dogs into the world. Maybe it will be ok one day if we can ever get it under control but that's not going to happen anytime soon. Still, thanks for being somewhat responsible.
I tend to avoid breeders.

Buying a dog from a breeder is not adopting! I am just glad that Oprah said she will adopt all of her dogs in the future. There is no need to spend a lot of money on a dog when there are amazing dogs dying in shelters everyday!

I adopted my shelter dog and then my elderly father stole her from me! He treats her better than he ever did his own kids. Buys her BK burgers and McChicken sandwiches all the time! For realz! Bastard! I want my damn dog back!

i have a dog a rescued from a puppy mill. he was still a puppy but didn't act like one. he stood still, frozen, with no expression when i got him. he wouldn't eat & ran from me when i went near him. he had practically every disease a dog could, have sratches & cuts all over him & was debarked most-likely by a blunt object being shoved down his throat. when he finally started to eat he would shake & nervously look behind him with each bite. after a few days he started to feel better & began playing with toys but didn't want to leave the house. After 2 yrs he has overcome so much, except that he is fear aggressive when it comes to strangers. It comes from a lack of confidence & despite a lot of training I don't think he will ever over come that & who can blame him. I wish he knew that no one would ever hurt him again & still cry when I think of what he went through during what should have been the most fun days of his life. Don't buy dogs from pet stores as you are perpetuating animal cruelty. Pet store dogs are from mills. Reputable breaders would never sell to a pet store. Plz adopt from a rescue or go to a good breader.
Re: Annette – Don't blame Oprah. A dog is your financial responsability. People who can't afford their animal's potential vet bills shouldn't own a dog. I hat people who want a hand out. Get a scond job you stupid bitch instead of writing into Oprah. She owes you nothing. I rescued my dog & spent thousands initially to get him healthy & for training & didn't expect anyone to give me a handout. My sisters who makes about 40k a year has a mut she rescued who needed surgery w/in the first year she had him on both knees & she put 3k on her credit card because she couldn't afford it. She has another dog she rescued who has heart problems which she has had to pay a lot to treat & 2 cats who constantly get urinary tract infections. She is at the vet every few months & never complains about the money she spends on their care because she loves them. The money pales in comparison with what the animals give to her. You are a dumb ass.

Thanks for posting this important issue!! Its an issue that has been long over looked. I hope Oprah shows in her investigation that PET SHOPS are STOREFRONTS for puppy mills! Pet stores and puppy mills work hand in hand…

For all the knowledge Oprah professes to have she is still woefully ignorant on so many issues. To be fifty-something and not have known one damn thing about the puppy mill disgrace and cruelty just boggles the mind!! This crap has been around forever and it's selfish greedy enterprise financed by ignorant masses who just want a pet NOW and refuse to do their research. If you want a pet please go the local shelter where so many abandoned and neglected animals are just waiting for a home and family to love.
