The Preggers Man on Oprah

The much buzzed about 'pregnant man', Thomas Beatie will be a guest on Oprah's show Thursday.
Beatie's a transgender man that is expecting a child. Though he underwent surgery to switch genders, he kept his female reproductive organs and is nearly six months pregnant.
He tells Oprah that his current wife Nancy is unable to conceive and that's the only reason he's going through with the pregnancy. Beatie was able to conceive via artificial insemination.
Thomas tells Oprah in a show clip, "I'm a person and I have the right to have my own biological child."
He expects to deliver a girl around July 3rd.

Every child deserves to be born and raised in a loving family. This decision does not seem ill considered and I would welcome any family that brings a child in this world with the kind of thoughtfullness that Thomas and Nancy have obviously given this. Relax everybody, there are so many children out there that deserve loving parents that embark on this journey. Let's just be happy that this is one family that is unified in making this happen in such a committed way.

as an ally of the transgender community, i'm very grateful that this has been posted in a respectful way! thanks perez! while some of the comments are mighty ignorant, i was happy to see many that there are plenty of folks that have open minds and heart and an understanding of the beauty of human diversity.
This a wonderful thing that Mr. Beatie is doing to for his family. One basic concept of the American dream is to have a family and he and his wife are doing what they have to to make that possible. Instead of complicating things by bringing in a third party surrogate, they have made the choice to keep it all in the family. If it is possible for them to do this, then why should any of you care that they are? It doesn't effect you in anyway, shape, or form, except for the fact that there will be one more person on this planet–and one more person who will be loved.
And as for whoever asked repeatedly "Who is the father?" Mr. Beatie is this child's father. Mrs. Beatie, the mother. As it would be in any male-female relationship.

I really don't understand why they are making such a huge deal out of this. This man was once a woman and still has the female organs…. of course she/he can become pregnant! If this baby comes out successfully, it will undoubtedly be with complications. Do you really think it's healthy for a baby to ingest all the testosterone supplements the mother is taking? Although SHE has her reproductive parts, the hormones do not match and most likely wouldn't support a healthy pregnancy. Again, publicity stunt. They probably have a surrogate in hiding.

The only thing I wonder about is whether all the hormones, etc. that Mr. Beatie has taken to "become a man" will be harmful for the baby? I don't know much about pregnancy or the effects of hormone levels on fetuses, so am not sure..? In any event, I hope they have a healthy little girl!

Carolyn and some of you other folks need a lesson in sex ed. The baby is NOT coming out of anything except Thomas's uterus by either C-section or vaginally. Sorry but Thomas is still a woman with a uterus who happens to have removed his breasts and has a beard, and will always be a woman no matter how many surguries he/she has, how much testosterone he/she injects. In his/her mind they might feel like a man but GENES don't lie, and XX (female) is still there and will always be there. Is being transgender wrong? No. I get what it is… being wired differently despite being born biologically a female, Thomas is wired (in the brain) as male. God makes us all, big/small, brown/yellow/black/white, etc. so we're all equally beautiful and special in his eyes. What I don't get is why wouldn't Thomas have changed reproductive organs too? I was at this taping of Oprah last week. It is really a woman giving birth, it just looks like a guy. Thomas took testosterone for 10 years and has been off of it for 2 years. He also had both of her boobs removed. Thomas's wife now has 2 grown daughters who were both on the show. Thomas has been pregnant before but had an a topic pregnancy and lost the baby. As for how Thomas is going to give birth, he said and I quote "the most natural way" …. And I traveled 600 miles to see an Oprah show and this is what i got…

It's nice to see that some people understand people's lifes. Yeah I'm gay, but changing my sex would be nothing I would ever come across doing. I think that this is a great experience for this couple and the world. The world needs to realize that this is what we are coming to. Within the last 10 years, our society has become more and more acceptable with gays in this country. Its nice to see for once that people stop judging others by their personal ways or sexual orientation. I'm a big believer in God, and to this day know that he is the only one that will ever judge me and it actually mean something to me.
