The Preggers Man on Oprah

The much buzzed about 'pregnant man', Thomas Beatie will be a guest on Oprah's show Thursday.
Beatie's a transgender man that is expecting a child. Though he underwent surgery to switch genders, he kept his female reproductive organs and is nearly six months pregnant.
He tells Oprah that his current wife Nancy is unable to conceive and that's the only reason he's going through with the pregnancy. Beatie was able to conceive via artificial insemination.
Thomas tells Oprah in a show clip, "I'm a person and I have the right to have my own biological child."
He expects to deliver a girl around July 3rd.

As a gay man, we have always fought to be accepted for who we are. Additionally we have fought for the rights of our transgendered brothers and sisters who feel that they were born the wrong gender. This disturbs me a lot because this really violates the need of transgendered to be accepted. I think he is pushing the button and putting the whole transgendered movement back many steps. Why could you just not adopt, there are so many kids who need wonderful homes. I feel the need to have my own biological son too, but I felt that fostering a child and then adopting was just as good.

i think this is really sad because i don't think this is helping this person's gender identity issues. men are physically unable to reproduce, so i think that this will severely hurt his mental well-being. it is only going to further his psyche from being able to recognize his "maleness", especially after delivery. that is such an instinct-based event, that i believe it is going to damage him beyond help of a therapist. i understand the base need for a child that is your own, but in this situation, it seems like it would have been better to adopt for the child's sake. this child will be tortured to no end, for absolute no fault of her own. i also don't think this child will be mentally stable, because of the situation she will be born into. she may never be able to fully understand the reasoning behind the decision, and only one of her parents will be her full parent. it seems more selfish on the husband's part, for wanting a child that is biologically his. what about his wife? it won't be biologically hers, why not be on a fair playing field, and just adopt? that could only save a child's life, no big deal……

I have a gay uncle, and a second cousin who is transitioning to become a woman, whom I support absolutely…but, I don't think this is right. When this woman chose to become a man, he should have to obey those rules. Men don't get pregnant and have babies. He is legally married because he is legally a man. He shouldn't be able to have a child. What is wrong with adoption, for God's sake? My second cousin, who is transitioning, also disagrees with this. She believes that when you decide to transition to the gender you indentify with, you should not be able to pick and choose between it. He is a man, and will be the father to this child, and I don't think it is right that the father is doing this…even if the father was a woman.

People always seem to think they need to justify and legitimate their gender and sexual expressions with their bodies, and this is just one of countless examples that disprove those assumptions.

No one looks at what kind of person HE is, they only look at their own cultural assumptions and prejudices-someone's gender and sexual expression/identity has nothing to do with whether they are a good person or not and we have no right to judge each other. I am not a doctor, nor have I ever had a child so I don't know a lot about what a child needs while its developing. However… it seems like the testosterone this person has taken to be turned into a man would make it impossible to safely carry a child. I guess we'll see when it comes out if the baby is okay - or if it has too much testosterone.
