Cow-human cross embryo lives three days
HUMAN-cow embryos have been created in a world first at Newcastle University in England, hailed by the scientific community, but labelled "monstrous" by opponents.
A team has grown hybrid embryos after injecting human DNA into eggs taken from cows' ovaries, which had most of their genetic material removed.
The embryos survived for three days and are intended to provide a limitless supply of stem cells to develop therapies for diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and spinal cord injuries, overcoming a worldwide shortfall in human embryos.
Dr Teija Peura, director of human embryonic stem cell laboratories at the Australian Stem Cell Centre, said somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) had been done between animal species, but the "99 per cent human" embryos could boost research.
"If successful, they would provide an important additional research tool to help realisation of stem cell-based therapies for human diseases," Dr Peura said.
"All avenues of research, including SCNT . . . need to be encouraged if we want to fulfil the promises of stem cell technologies."
But her colleague, Dr Andrew Laslett, warned the process was yet to yield a stem cell line and so it remained only an academic possibility.
In January, the Fertilisation and Embryology Authority gave Newcastle University a licence to do the work, but the British Parliament would debate the longer-term future of such research next month.
Under the licence, embryos are not allowed to be developed beyond 14 days.
Preliminary findings of the embryo program were presented in Israel last week, and the head of the university's Institute of Human Genetics, Prof John Burn, said further evaluation would be done before the full details were published.
"If the team can produce cells which will survive in culture, it will open the door to a better understanding of disease processes without having to use precious human eggs," Prof Burn said.
"Cells grown using animal eggs cannot be used to treat patients on safety grounds, but they will help bring nearer the day when new stem cell therapies are available."
The Catholic Church in Britain branded the creations as "monstrous" - a view supported by Caroline Chisholm Centre for Health Ethics director Fr Kevin McGovern.
"An almost-human embryo is being created and then it's being destroyed," he said.
"I cannot see that that respects human life or the dignity of human life.
"Human beings - or even almost human embryos - are not just things that you can use in a laboratory experiment.
"What is being created is life.
"No one knows exactly what would grow from these embryos.
"If this is approved in the UK, there will be renewed pressure to permit it here, and we will travel further down the slippery slope of allowing just about anything."
It is not the first time hybrids have been created.
The method was pioneered by Dr Hui Zhen Sheng's team at the Shanghai Second Medical University, China, where she fused human cells with rabbit eggs to produce early stage embryos, which in turn yielded human stem cells.

I'm glad more people aren't being born, there are enough alive now. Yes, we need to do the research, to find treatments and cures to help those who are already alive, and those who are yet to be born in the distant future. But something has to give here. We need to stop as a people, breeding like rabbits. The research, is more of a gift for the future generations. I have hope that maybe there will come a day when there isn't such a crushing number of people, when those who are born, can be treated and maybe cured and can go on to be good contributing members of society. Citizens of a healthy (as healthy as it can be, given the amount of pollution, and global warming *sad*) world.

Well, for all you wondering why this is the case, it's because using human embryos has been banned for stem cell research and all the cures that could be made. So now we have cow/human embryos because of all the roadblocks that were created by backward thinking individuals. Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and other serious illnesses have the potential for being cured with human embryos, but that has been made against the law, so now this. I say a country goes ahead with the human embryo cure(s) and once strides are made, people will see the potential of stem cells to cure things that were not considered 'curable'.

I am honestly sick of those who think that its something evil to "destroy" a human embryo when in fact what comes from the process could save thousands of others' lives (example; Christopher Reeves). That embryo hasn't developed a heart, a brain, eyes, ears, anything. It doesn't know what life is; it is not as though scientists are killing toddlers to get stem cells. Honestly, those in opposition of this need to think it over.

The problem is … there is "life" involved in this so-called process (which is not 100% btw), and their plan is to not let an embryo surpass 14 days? They shouldn't be doing this in the first place… they're are safer (and more humane) ways to Stem Cell research (which I happen to support), what a waste.

Fantastic stuff. It's unfortunate for the US that your present government has ruled out stem cell research. The UK are going to lead the field in this progressive, scientific area. Sad that the present US government would rather spend trillions of dollars on an invasion and occupation of Iraq, than try to be forerunners in curing spinal cord injuries, parkinsons disease, kidney disease, pancreatic disease etc, etc, etc.

Humans should not be created for any reason other than that, and these were in fact human embryos created with no intention to thrive and grow. That is the ethcial dilemma. I truly hope there are never any type of human-animal hybrids, but that is not what the Catholic Church and all of the people who oppose these experiments are worried about. They are opposed to the fact that a potential human life is created and then destroyed, with no consideration for the fact that it would have in fact grown into a human being. People are dumb. It's just research and it's meant to help out human society as a whole. If you have a problem with it, then don't donate your eggs or reap the potential benefits of the research. It's not that hard! We don't need people who disagree with this stuff try to ruin it. People are getting confused and are thinking that the cow was impregnated for 9 months and had a human-cow hybrid baby. Relax…they olny took a cow egg (which is lost every menstrating cycle anyways), took out all the genetic material and put in human DNA. This embryo lived for three days. It's impossible to have a human-cow baby, because of our differences in DNA. The human body is alot more complex then most people think. You would understand after having to take bio for two years…hahaha. Anyways, I've been exposed to people with MS, parkinson's and other neurological diseases. Most are degenerative, meaning they just keep on getting worse and worse. If this could help even slow down the progress of the disease or make it more comfortable for these people to live, then why would anyone oppose this? How can you have more sympathy for a cow, then a human being (and their family), who is suffereing one of the worst faiths you can imagine? It's very easy to be ignorant when you are not exposed to something so detrimental.
I wish people were more open-minded about stem-cell research. It could help (and has helped) so, so, sooo many people. But I can see why it worries some people.
