I have seen several interviews now in which Jenny has told her story and promoted her book. Not every kid with Autism functions at the same level, not every kid will respond the same way to treatment. Jenny McCarthy did whatever she could do to help her boy, who responded well. And bottom line, she has given hope to other parents of kids with Autism. She deserves respect for that.

Lets break this down simply… we are an overmedicated society PERIOD!!! Shots for this, pills for that. I believe that medication and vaccines can be helpful, however dosages and frequency are out of control. Our bodies build up immunities to disease, which of course is the basis of live vaccinations. Doesnt it make sense then that by constantly vaccinating with cause mutating diseases. Look at the FLU…perfect example. Every year mindless drones go out and get the Flu shot at the hopes of not getting sick and every year what happens???? Sicker and Sicker people infected by a "all new" form of the flu. These diseases are just going to keep getting worse and worse the more we combat them. ITs just like to antibiotic debate…. if you take it uselessly you will build up a tolerance and it will no longer work. I used to pop tylenol like it was going out of style to get rid of headaches and noticed that I took 1 -then needed 2 then 3. I stopped taking it all together for probably about 2 years, if I got a little headache I went to bed and now if I ever have one that interferes with my day, just 1 pill works fine….hmmmmmm
She does not fight fair. She bring too much emotion when she is debating, and it makes her look foolish as if she is arguing based on emotions and not on facts. She needs to learn to to speak without yelling and using emotion. She's not a good debater AT ALL.
There are many, many people who become irate and threaten to sue doctors and nurses everytime their family members get bad news or die. In their minds, their loved one is ill or dead because a healthcare worker made a mistake, not due to natural causes. If people keep treating doctors and nurses this way, terrorizing them with frivilous lawsuits, and continue to scream in their faces at their place of employment day in and day out, there will be no more individuals willing to be doctors or nurses. I am a fairly young nurse and I willingly admit I still have plenty to learn, but I know enough to know that healthcare workers are not God. We cannot make someone stay well or stay alive just because the family is threatening to sue us, b/c many times circumstances go beyond what is within our control. I love helping people, but there are so many people who love to hate me and threaten me as a nurse at work, that I have decided to switch professions so I don't have to worry about being at the legal mercy of incompetent, misguided individuals who think they know more about healthcare even though they have no education. Vaccines are essential for infection control purposes, and I shutter at the thought of what society would be like without vaccines for tetanus, Hepatitis B, polio, HPV, smallpox…the list goes on.
I saw this last night. She is a-ma-zing. I'm sure what she goes through on a daily basis is difficult, just like many other families. I'm so proud of her for sticking to her guns and voicing her opinion! GO GIRL!
I applaud Jenny McCarthy for standing up for what she believes in and for bringing so much attention to the autism epidemic. However, I do NOT believe in the whole Mercury in vaccines causes autism theory. Thimerosol was removed from vaccines in 1999, yet autism rates have continued to skyrocket. I just don't see the proof. I think parents are, understandably, looking for a scapegoat here.

36 shots???? WTF? When I was a kid you only got a few and spreadout. I still have my immunization card to prove it. Clearly all those vaccines arent needed. Hepatitis? Is that really necessary? BTW I got the mumps when I was little I don't know if it was before or after my shots, cause I did get MMR shot. I'm still alive, I gave it to my Dad too, LOL. I just wish I'd gotten chicken pox, because there was no vaccine back then and now I'm an adult female who's never had chicken pox. I'm going to practically have to hide out for 9 months so no one can give me chicken pox while I'm pregnant.

No she isn't a doctor but she is a MOM! A Mom of a child with autism. I have a child with a mild case of asperger's symdrome which is in the spectrum and believe me you have to educate yourself and when it is your CHILD you will do anything and everything to help them. Are vaccines necessary?? Yes.. Is the schedule for them too aggresive?? YES!! They are giving them way too many way too soon. Just compare it to what the schedule for vaccines was 20 yrs. ago. Then check the stastistics for autism 20 yrs. ago. Coincidence?? Re: mary – You become a medical expert about anything that affects the life of your child. Doesn't take a medical degree to investigate, do your own research and find out as much as you can on behalf of your child. You seek out as many valued opinions as possible and also think for yourself when it concerns the well-being of your child.
If half the people here paid attention-they'd also realize that she's talking about the vaccination SCHEDULE and how many shots are given at once on the currently recommended AAP schedule.
I think she's very passionate about this because of her son and it must get frustrating talking to people that assume to know the reasons behind autism yet have never seen it first hand within their own families. Some doctors will argue it's not about vaccinations others say it has something to do with it. The bottom line is that the people who have children that live with it need help NOW. The people that don't have children yet should also make it a priority to research it because you never know if it could happen to your child. I will say , it's hard to understand a person when they are screaming over other people. Jenny should've waited her turn to speak or atleast let someone else finish their thought before jumping on them. Again, I sympathize with her so I won't pick on her about this. One of my friends has a child who has been in therapy for the last 3 years of his life because of autism. It takes a toll on everyone involved.

She's welll educated in this issue and is raising awareness amongst people who would never hhave known other wise, I lover her and I think she is an excellent role model (now at lleast). I have an autistic son whos 6 years old and i've been reading up on soo many different articles of how its a growing epidemic! She speaks for all children. She is a great advocate! I love her and i wish i could meet her!
April is Autism Awareness Month. Jenny does make a point but she shouldn't have come off with that much attitude, although it make sense because it is very personal to her. I do agree with her that children are given "treatment" and diagnosis at an early age. As a early childhood educator, I feel as though a lot of children are diagnosed for something such as ADHD and other such things at an early age and drugged too early. My prayers are with her and her family this month.
If you researched legitimate studies (studies run by universities and in psychology labs, for example) you would realize that there is absolutely no correlation between vaccinations and autism. The sad part about this is the range and influence that a celebrity can have despite the fact that her arguments are not validated by educated researchers. If you don't give your children vaccines, you are only putting them at risk for contracting diseases. Please do some research before you make such life altering decisions regarding your children rather than taking what some celebrity has to say as truth
Please do not send your unvacinated child to school with my children! I have a brother with austism and he is the most wonderful person with many talents. Despite this, I am first in line to vacinate my children. There is no scientific evidence to show that autism is caused by vacinations. I could have a child with austims because of genetics, not a vacine!

Fact is - there still is no known cause to be the sure reason for any of the many different types of Autism. Some cases are genetic. More boys than girls are diagnosed.

It's great Jenny is bringing awareness to autism, but I find her certainty off-putting. The jury is still out on what causes autism and I find it irresponsible for her, as a person with a lot of clout, to promulgate her theory as if it's fact. I understand her passion, but the fact that she can't be open-minded to the possibility that there could be something besides vaccines going on makes me distrust her intellectually.
I think the misunderstand is that "don't give all the shots at once" I would rather PAY MORE to do one shot at a time then the combined MMR shots they are giving. Save money, lose your kid. Sad.

A lot of people are saying Jenny is misinformed, but I disagree. I feel a lot of people are misinformed about vaccinations. I am a mom who's 6 month old son recently passed away the day after his 6 month vaccines. At first they labeled it as SIDS, but after the autopsy it was determined he had an adverse reaction to the vaccinations. I think she is doing a good thing by raising awareness.

I have two children with autism. I believe for one second that vacinations were the cause of my children having autism. I think people can believe what they want, but in our case I truly believe its genetic.

Beautiful, smart, funny…Jim Carrey hit the jackpot with this woman.
I feel her pain but I hate to blow Jenny's bubble. If you look at the footage of Jenny playing with her infant son, her son already looks different than regular babies. His head is a little bit bigger than a normal baby's head and his eyes are dull. He is not very alert and responsive like regular babies, meaning he is kind of slow. He already shows some signs of autism in that video.
That footage was shot way before 2 years old, way before getting all the vaccine shots and getting diagnosed. But Jenny insists that her son dies in front of her right after he got the shot.
I've done so much research on this because my sister, who passed away at 13, lived her life with so many problems all because of those shots she recieved as an infant. I spent a lot of time at hospitals seeing other children that had problems because of those shots. I think Jenny McCarthy is amazing for standing up for this. I applaud her for being so passionate.

Idiot. Learn the physiology of the body and how vaccinations work. There is futile evidence supporting vaccinations = autism. It's more likely all the marijuana she has been smoking. Besides that, people how DON'T get their children vaccinated are killing ME. I don't have the vaccinations available to children today, so people like myself or especially the elderly are susceptible to children's diseases (Shingles, anyone?), from which they could DIE. Kids are more resilient and are CARRIERS of these viruses and go around infecting adults. THAT is why vaccinations are necessary.
Polio is a prime example. If everyone on the planet were vaccinated, the virus would no longer exist because it is a human only virus. GET YOUR KIDS VACCINATED so that me, you, and everyone else doesn't get sick from them.

You all need to listen to her. She isn't saying no to vaccines, she's just saying there needs to be more variety in them. As adults, we all take different doses of medications, etc but as children, regardless of age and size, we all get the same vaccine, one size fits all. When we were younger, most of us had about 10 vaccines by the age of five. Today's children have upwards of 40 shots by the age of 2. And she isn't saying her son is CURED. She is saying he is recovered. She likened it to getting hit by a car. You recover from your injuries but there still may be some repercussions. She also isn't telling people this is what you must do to overcome autism. She is saying this is what worked for her son and you should try it as many doctors feel there is no getting better from Autism.
I think she's awesome and I'm SO glad she's getting the word out. However…it is a HUGE, HUGE problem that people are blaming autism on vaccination. There is absolutely NO scientific evidence to even remotely suggest this. Also, the guy who started this same misguided belief in the UK (which resulted in hundreds of children dying from preventable diseases and recurrence of illness that should've been eradicated) was almost literally kicked out of the country– and then came to the US to spread the same absolutely incorrect propaganda. it's extremely important to vaccinate your children — take this from an immunology phD student.

While I totally respect Jenny for making her stand on Autism awareness, I was totally disappointed in the whole Larry King show last night as they focused on vaccines being the reason for autism. There has been no link found! It's been proven over and over again. My brother is close to 30 and we didn't have that many vaccines as children, so please explain how he is Autistic if that's the theory. The fact of the matter is that we still don't know what cause Autism, and parents need to except and love their children no matter what rather than blaming other people. I love my brother and would not trade him for the world. I'm sad when this is the discussion that comes out of World Autism Awareness Day (which Perez you never even mentioned while other site did) rather than how we can help families of Autistic children.
at the risk of sounding heartless, personal losses do not provide substantial basis for alteration in implementation of public health policies. automobiles kill, does that mean we all need to stop driving?
i'm proud of jenny for speaking up and fighting for people who lost their children due to vaccination, but i suggest her take microbiology 101 and hit up on some of the basic ideas on herd immunity. vaccination is not fool proof, but without it we risk large-scale epidemics that would bring us back to the middle age.

I think she should be more concerned with the doses kids are getting as opposed to the number of shots they're getting. It's very possible that her son went into cardiac arrest because the dose he was given was unintentionally too high. Nurses are overworked and tired and unfortunately they make mistakes. I really don't think the number of shots that kids are getting is the cause of autism. I don't care what her pediatrician has to say.. He's probably only around to make a quick buck and maybe get Jenny into bed.

Millions of children would die without vaccinations and the morbidity and mortality rates of this country would skyrocket! Also, if she wanted to get her point across more efficiently, then she should not be using inappropriate language, that makes her look very unprofessional. The bottom line, she is not educated enough to have a say in this subject. Go to school for healthcare and then voice your opinion.

I do think Vaccine has something to do with Autism. In US, we give kids too many shots, some are really not necessary. If you look at Japan, Taiwan, Singapore other developed Asian countries, they don't give babies and toddlers that many vaccine shots (they give kids just enough shots to prevent public disease outbreak and some serious diseases) and they don't have such extremely high rate of autism children like US. Doesn't the statistics tell you something?
People keep saying if kids don't get all the shots they will get terrible diseases easily and die. That's just not the reality. Those Asian countries don't have high baby/toddlers death rate either, definitely not any higher than US and they don't have any public disease outbreak either. There must be something they did right. Please don't tell me Asian kids don't get autism because of genetic. I don't believe that.

Re: Gary – Gary, we don't get diseases each time we come in contact with the virus or bacteria. If we did, we'd never be healthy. Same with vaccines, not each child's body will react the same way to the chemicals.
My nephew too had a seizure after his MMR and stopped speaking directly afterward, soon to be diagnosed as autistic. It's so easy for the scientific community to dismiss the "anecdotal" evidence of parents who watch it happen to their children due to a lack of scientific evidence. I wonder if they would be so cocky if they ever had the misfortune to watch it happen to their own babies. I would never wish that on them, but it's very frustrating for parents of autistic children to be ignored when they bring up some very valid points about the connections between vaccinations and autism.
Thank goodness Jenny McCarthy is not one to be bullied or silenced. She's speaking up for thousands of parents and children, and using her celebrity for good. Thank you for posting this clip, Perez.
She is ignorant and not realizing the significant studies that have ruled out vaccines alone as a cause of autism. She is uneducated and is also providing hope to parents that there is a "cure" through diet. I work with hundreds of kids with autism and there is no 'cure". She is giving false hope to people and it pisses me off.

all of you who say that vaccines are to protect children from getting sick are not realizing how much pull the pharmaceutical companies have on our government.

but kids today get way too many. in the 80s kids used to get about 12… today its around 34.
WOW—what an idiot. If she would present the scientific info she would see that we consume more mercury through water, lotions, etc than are in the shots. Has she ever thought that her actions when she was younger is what "caused" her son's autism. She has had implants, injections, etc….this would be just as much to contribute as anything. So please don't call her amazing. The minute we stop the vaccinations we get plagues again. Measles use to kill over 5,000 people yearly, the list goes on……and by the way nothing "causes" autism, the child already has the disease in them. By the way, notice that all of her info she presents is "Non-Scientific and Anecdotal"…she is the one that labels it that way…..listen to your docs!!!!!

Jenny HAS NEVER claimed that we should NOT vaccinate our children. If anything, vaccinations should be more spaced out, in order to gauge a child's reaction to them.
A former co-worker of mine had a daughter who had had several prior vaccinations - no problem. But her doctor decided to give her 4 all in the same visit, and the little girl ended up in the hospital and almost died! And her body may have sustained permanent damage, but because she's a baby, it's way to early to tell.
It's ridiculous all of the vaccinations that children receive now. I'm assuming that most of us on here were born in the 80s - when there were only about 10 vaccines recommended before the age of 5. Today, babies on average receive 36 VACCINES BEFORE THE AGE OF 2 ! And most of us have turned out fine - I was born in 1983 and don't know anyone who's ever had polio, mumps or measels or anything terrible.
It's like penicillin - lots of people have bad reactions to it! Yet we assume that everyones bodies respond the same way to vaccines. That's a little f'd up.
