While helping to raise awareness for autism, which her son has, and discussing the possible causes (including too many vaccinations for toddlers), this happened between Jenny McCarthy and one of the other panelists on Larry King Live last night.

Good for you Jenny! God bless you for bringing attention to this VERY serious issue. My 4 year old nephew was a smart and sociable baby just like my daughter who is the same age until recieving a series of vaccinations he is now autistic and I DO NOT believe he was born that way!

i do NOT vaccinate my kids and get crazy looks all the time…when in fact i should be the one giving the crazy looks….

if anyone has doubts about her child and autism…read her book!

She's overemotional and needs to do some research. Really quite ignorant, though I feel sorry for her.

If not for vaccinations, there would be many diseases kicking around to kill or seriously debilitate her child later in life. Pandemics. Rubella alone caused more deaths and dehabilitation than adverse vaccine reactions. More children and adults would die as a result of not vaccinating the population. Like everything in life, health care is provided the basis of costs/benefits analysis. The good outweighs the bad.

Jenny McCarthy is not fucking amazing. She is a fucking idiot. She is not a medical doctor. There is no cure for autism. Another uneducated celebrity thinking they know more than doctors. She sounds as uneducated as she is. Moron!!

God Bless you Jenny. I have had many many physicians try and force me to accept that thay have diagnosed my son with autism. I refused the bullshit meds and brainwashing that they wanted to put him through and dealt with it myself. It turned out he was partially deaf. The pharmaceutical companies are trying to do all they can to medicate everyone possible for just plain profit. No matter if they are an infant or child. It makes no difference to them. In my opinion they are poisoning everyone with disease so that the drugs are necessary. In America, a parent will actually go to prison for refusing to vaccinate their children. My son's speech therapist threatened to take away my son and even came to inspect my home because I wouldn't listen to theur bullshit. What happened to freedom in America?…..big bankers and drug companies.

how is she amazing? She is angry, insulting and doesn't let anyone get a word in edgewise. She sits there presenting her anectodes as if they were incontrovertible scientific proof. The fact that any physician gives her legitimacy by sitting there and arguing with her (which by the way she doesn't even get her story straight and its unclear what she is even arguing for) is unconscionable. It is so irresponsible for Larry King to sit there and support this BS that a celebrity is out there allowed to be spewing that she believes vaccines cause autism. Are celebrities our doctors now too? How dangerous is it when we us this invective, this inflammatory rhetoric to decide what causes an illness. These people have no grounding in scientific evidence so they operate in forums where truth doesn't matter–the media and the courts, manipulating that discourse to make their own "truth." And it is the wealthy, white and the privileged that advocate that the rest of us put our children at risk for infectious diseases that we know are deadly and that medicine fought so hard to erradicate. Fine, let there be epidemic numbers of measels encephalitis–which by the way causes much more devastating impairment then maybe all those Brentwood moms would think twice about telling other people what to do with their children

She is not even remotely qualified to understand and talk publicly about all the possible causes and correlations of Autism. People devote their lives to studying these disorders, she is making a fool of them and herself. There is no one cause for anything. She oversimplifies the issue. It's good that she is bringing awareness to the issue but she needs to stear clear of talking about causes and treatments. Stick to whatever it is she does in Hollywood, which I'm not even sure what that is.

    508

I am a nurse and while I am all for spreading out vaccines over a longer period of time so that fewer are administered in each setting, I wish Jenny McCarthy would stop fueling this autism/vaccination paranoia. The reason there are so many more autism diagnoses made now than ever before is NOT because it is becoming a more prevalent disease. It is because the autism spectrum of diagnoses was broadened to include many other disorders and symptoms that were previously thought to be unrelated. Scientific research has shown the overwhelming good that vaccines have done. My best friend, a teacher and educated woman, has decided not to vaccinate her daughter because she prefers to listen to Ms. McCarthy instead of the results of scientific research. It makes me sad to know that people will put their children at significant risk because of what a former playboy model has to say about the matter.

i'm so glad jenny is out there doing something; her & jim carey are a voice to families affected by autism. i (@ 26) can't live a normal life, i've been helping financially take care of my sister since i was 20 years old & now my step-dad is going to prison (b/c he's a pos) for 2 years…& b/c my mom can't work (b/c she has to take care of my sister full time, i have to take care of my mom & my sister. this disease has destroyed my life, my sisters life…it's absolutely devastating all the way around.

  13. wowwwww says – reply to this

    513

A lot of you are not making any sense and more importantly are misinterpreting the point Jenny is trying to get across. I agree, it was stupid for her to curse on air and she did get a bit overly emotional but she has an autistic child you idiots OF COURSE she will be getting emotional. Anyhow, there is a link between autism and vaccines. My younger brother has autism. When he was 9 months old, he got a vaccination one day and he completely changed. His eye contact was never there again and he always seemed dazed. My father knows deep down that this was not something he was born with. Prior to receiving this vaccination, he made eye contact and seemed curious about everything. When he was 2, the doctor had diagnosed him with Autism and there was no doubt about the fact that it was because of that vaccination he received as an infant. Jenny is not saying that vaccinations are not necessary, but we should limit them! I think everyone should get the necessary amount of shots recommended, but doctors these days will try to give your baby like 3 shots in one day! IT is ridiculous! My other 4 year old brother was a bit behind with his vaccinations and the nurse wanted to give him 3 in one day to get it over with. WTF is that all about I mean honestly. The number used to be 1 in 166 children are "born" with autism….now it's 1 in 150! And if you guys don't think it is the vaccinations that are causing it then wtf is it?

Re: shesnotadoctor – Children who DO Not have a comprimised immune system are at no greater risk to die b/c they are not vaccinated. If your child is healthy and eats properly they are more than capable to fight off infectious diseases. If vaccinations are so safe then why is it that my husband works for the worlds largest vaccine corp. and the chemists there wont vaccinate their children? Why at birth do we vaccinate our newborns for Hepatitis? A strain that is only sexually transmitted? Because Pharm. corp. give kick backs to Doctors and hospitals. they no longer give cash incentives but, the last time I checked golf and dinner outings are not cheap. I myself vaccinate my child however, she has a comprimised immune system. I do not necessarily think vaccines are evil. I think you should do your research and wait to immunize a child when there body can handle it. If you did not read Jenny McCarthys book -you should it is excellent and you will see that she does research and she does know exactly what she is talking about.

    518

I love Jenny McCarthy and the fight she's putting up. Even if it turns out that vaccines and autism aren't linked (although I believe they are) she's still fighting for a great cause. She's getting it out in the open that this is a major issue and hopefully lighting a fire under the medical providers and researchers in this country. Fix the big problems. Around 1 in 150 children are autistic in the US, which should be alarming to EVERYONE. That means that at least 1 in 150 children have a serious illness. This is NOT ok, by any means.

Jenny, keep up the good work! Stay strong!!!

    522

I cannot wade through another comment here without correcting an absolute fallacy that's been stated repeatedly: there is no mercury in vaccines. Almost ten years ago, once the MMR/ gut bacteria theory was throughly disproven, the "let's find something environmental to blame this on so we can sell more supplements and crap to desperate parents" brigade moved on to blaming thimerosal, a preservative used in multiple dose vials of vaccines. It contained minute amounts of mercury, and some of the symptoms of mercury poisoning are similar to autism, so autism = mercury poisoning from vaccines became the next cause. There was already an anti-vax movement, so the environmental autism contingent and the anti-vaxxers fell in love at first sight. They were so successful at projecting their views into the media that they created a panic, vaccination numbers dropped dramatically, and the FDA voluntarily removed thimerosal from all vaccines by 2001. The last of the stockpiled vaccines containing thimerosal expired in 2003.

So, there is no mercury in vaccines, and there hasn't been for years, yet the number of children affected with autism continues to rise unabated. That kind of shoots a huge hole in Jenny McCarthy's claims that mercury in vaccines causes autism.

the incorrect belief that there is a link between vaccinations and autism is a serious public health issue. the study this idea is based on was very poorly designed and has never been replicated. All but one of the researchers involved have now withdrawn their support for the hypothesis. Perez, as a public figure who is conscious of your influence on your readers, it is SO important that you do not help to spread this false belief that will put thousands of young children at unnecessary risk for contracting serious illnesses. Jenny McCarthy needs to do her homework.

actually, to the people who are spouting misinformation about mercury being in vaccinations on this, you are propelling the myth. When the initial reports came out hypothesizing the link the FDA and CDC removed thimersol (the mercury preservative agent in the MMR vaccine) to debunk those "rumors" And get this, since 2000 when the mercury agent was removed the number of diagnosed autism cases has continued to climb.

Additionally, it is not ALL vaccinations as Jenny is screeching about. Get your facts straight. It is with the MMR vaccination mostly.

There seems to be this misconception out there that vaccines are "big business" and that doctors are getting some kind of kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies to administer them. Its sort of concerning how conspiratorial people get about this stuff. Vaccines are actually the lowest financial yield product a company can produce. Think about it from a financial perspective–you can either create a vaccine for malaria–one dose, one treatment, leading eventually to population erradication of disease and no further need for your product or you can develop a patented treatment that requires administration in an ongoing fashion for an indefinite period of time and does nothing to address the underlying incidence of disease in the population. Which one seems more financially viable? In fact, as the case of malaria aptly demonstrates, pharmaceutical companies have a financial disincentive to develop vaccines. For them, its actually better if your child develops measles, sepsis and winds up in an ICU taking a drug that costs 10,000 per administration.

As far as whether doctors are giving vaccines in collusion with drug companies–is that even ridiculous enough to merit addressing? Vaccines are billed to insurance companies largely at cost and there is no financial incentive provide to do so.

    536

There is risk associated with any treatment. Vaccines do cause untoward reactions in the few. But we are charged with ensuring the health of the population and yes, a certain degree of risk is considered acceptable. On the individual level, this often does not compute. Especially in a highly litigious, somewhat entitled population who doesn't understand science, statistics or medical reasoning and has been trained to think that every death is really the "fault" of a doctor for being unable to prevent it (John Ritter, anyone) Its beyond absurd and as a doctor, just like that young nurse, makes me want to quit and have all the entitled, internet "educated" Jenny McCarthys of this world just take care of themselves, since studying science and medicine is worthless and they apparently do a better job themselves. In some ways, I would love to be able to spout uneducated bullshit about unsubstantiated things I believe. But I can't. Because I am charged with the responsibility of someone else's health, and so I get a lot more careful with what I spout and advise. And maybe that is the responsibility that she fails to realize she has. Her words could absolutely do harm.

THINK ABOUT IT.

  42. Sara says – reply to this

    542

Wow. There are a lot of misinformed people spouting their facts out here. Like saying that Hep B shots are the ones to be concerned about? FALSE. The major concern was with the MMR vaccination.

A study was published in a UK journal in 1998 by Wakefield. He noted a casual relationship between MMR vaccines/and an GI disorder. The following studies that supported this vaccination-autism link have all been not only discredited, but the authors and researchers admitted that they were not substantial studies.

Interestingly enough, Wakefield, who stared all the drama is in multiple law suits against vaccination companies and has a patent pending on what he considers a "safer" vaccination.

Fingers are getting pointed at the drug companies, but let's also look back at the history and scientific evidence. The agents that were thought to cause autism have been removed from vaccinations, so, well. What are we going to blame next?

Vaccinations are important. If you want to spread them out, so be it. But in terms of autism, please understand when it is typical to see regressive symptoms. Oh yeah, right around the time that children are receiving their vaccines. So, child B gets a vaccine and 4 weeks later starts to display symptoms when, oh yeah, they are in the age range of seeing these things start to creep up.

Re: jbRe: jb – Jenny is not acting like her child is the only one with disabilities. She's trying to raise awareness for children like YOUR 23 year old son. She's trying to help parents like YOU find answers and solutions and prevent this from happening to other children. Geez.

  44. Sara says – reply to this

    544

CONT..Let's not even get into the fact that many children who were diagnoses as autistic displayed regressive symptoms BEFORE they received routine immunizations.

Autism is terrible and scary and untreatable (don't even get me started on that, Jenny). It is understandable that any parent or person affected by this disease wants an answer as to why. But let's stop putting vaccinations under the gun and start looking at the other MULTIPLE environmental agents that are also being considered as a possible cause.

  45. Chandra says – reply to this

    545

GO JENNY!!! I have never vaccinated my son, I REFUSED. He is a happy healthy grown man of 19 years old. I always thought it was strange to vaccinate against "so called cured diseases". I am glad I trusted my instincts.

  46. CLaw says – reply to this

    546

Oh, Jenny. You are justified in being an emotional wreck. You are justified in raising awareness about autism as a condition. But without spending 8+ years dedicated to scientific or medical studies as most PhD or MDs do, I don't really want your medical opinion. There are many risks to surgical procedures - just because someone lost a relative in an OR doesn't justify their position that surgery is dangerous and should never be performed.

  47. MMH says – reply to this

    547

The fact is that vaccination SAVE LIVES. It's horribly unfortunate that society can so easily forget about the epidemics and pandemics of the past… the painful, devastating diseases that have been successfully eradicated because of timely vaccination! Is it really that simple to dismiss how we are surrounded day in and day out by other possible contributing factors to autism (genetic, environmental, etc)? This is an unfortunate, heart-breaking, life-altering diagnosis and my heart goes out to anyone who has been affected by it. But, there is still just so much that is UNKNOWN about autism and its origin.

The science until this point has shown no link between vaccination and autism. God help our country when deadly (and unnecessary) diseases begin to creep their way back into our lives. All because parents are scared to protect their children through vaccinations that have been proven to be safe.

The evidence neither confirms nor denies a causal relationship between vaccines and autism. Bottom line: you can't prove they are the problem. I work with kids with autism and I really don't like her.

To anyone who didn't watch or tivo the entire program. Jenny does not want to eliminate vaccinations. We are in favor or changing the vaccination schedule to make it safe for children and babies who have a predisposition to autism.

It is very upsetting for me to read the comments that critisize this movement. These people obviously don't understand what so many families dealing with autism have witnessed. Of course there is a genetic component, but it sure as hell didn't matter for my little brother UNTIL he was injected with copious amounts of toxic ingredients that we could get along with replacing.

  54. Jo says – reply to this

    554

"Too many to soon" is what she is saying & I totally agree. All 5 of my children were given their vaccinations as recommended by the medical profession. My 4th child has Aspergers Syndrome (high functioning autism). He was born in 1990 when Thimerosal was an ingredient of vaccination. I found out last year that his medical records show that he was given a 4th dose of triple antigen & polio sabin (without my knowledge) at 3mth's of age between the recommended 3 dose's at 2mth's, 4mth's & 6mth's of age "he had a reaction to his 3rd dose". After speaking to my Dr about this extra dose, I was reassured that this would not have caused my sons disability.
My point is that although their is no real proof one way or the other, the doubt is now planted firmly in my beliefs that vaccination 'could' be a cause for not just autism but other medical problems aswell…
    I hate everything about Thimerasol!!!!!

Some people immune systems are strong enough where they don't need a vaccination. Besides you are missing the damn point, a baby doesn't need so many vaccinations at a younger age because their immune systems are still weak and not mature yet. Some people don't belive in that shit because natural remedies work better sometimes and I know because my dad is a doctor and my family we have never ever had the flu or any diseases that are out there which requires us to take medicine.

    562

I find it hard to believe that her son developed autism due to an adverse reaction to a vaccine. I have never heard of anyone becoming autistic due to an accident or injury of any kind; it's such a complex condition, even if her son did go into cardiac arrest and suffer ischemic damage to his brain, that would not cause the kinds of complex patterns and behaviours associated with autism…it's sad that her son had a bad reaction and that he is autistic, but I suspect he would have been that way anyway. People like to blame vaccines but where would we be without them? Would she rather her son die of some terrible infectious disease?

The autism is a genetic problem. there is a problem in chromosomes 22 with the gene SHANK3, problem in chromosomes 11 with the gene neuroxine 1, , mutation of gene NLGN3 and NLGN4 (who came of mother), etc.
There are difference in structure of brain between person autistic and person "normal".
Stop to believe that autism is the result of an vaccin, its not true!!

P.S. The reason the "number of people with autism" has continued to rise is because now more people are being labelled with it. It is a "hot" new diagnosis. Is something wrong with your kid? Must be autism! It will go down when we have the next new diagnosis (like ADD did)

I'm not defending everything Jenny is saying, but I do not let my kids get all thier vaccinations all at once. 6 shots at a time?? That is way too much for such a small little thing to handle. I go do like 2 at a time in case they have a reaction….. I do not believe kids should get such a large volume of shots all at one time.

Re: emma – You THINK no kids had autism when you grew up because they weren't allowed to go to school. Not before 1975 were we obligated to provide access to education to all kids, and even then they mostly went to segregated schools or institutions.

OH jenny, you are an idiot.

You didn't prove a point, you didn't educate anyone, nor did you bring awareness to autism. All you did was get people like, Perez Hilton, yo feel sorry for your son who almost died. So don't give me this shit anymore.

I expected better from someone who has taken this on as her life's passion.

Re: furby – You're mistaken. Mercury is not found in all vaccines. A compound called Thimerosal which contains mercury was used to preserve vaccines. This is no longer used. It has not been proven that vaccines cause autism. That is not ignorance, it's a fact. Perhaps if you were alive 60 or 70 years ago when diseases like polio were paralyzing and killing people you might have a different view on vaccination.

    National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program

Plug that in google and see how what is required in order to qualify to get $ … thus far the government has paid out over a billion dollars, if there is not injury in vac shots why is there a compension program and why is there so much $ going out for it.

This is my fav part US department website:

For an injury, you may be paid:

    a reasonable amount for past and future nonreimbursable medical, custodial care, and rehabilitation costs, and related expenses (There is no limit on the amount a person with an injury may be paid for these types of expenses. Payments are based on your vaccine injury needs.);

    up to $250,000 for actual and projected pain and suffering;

    lost earnings; and/or

reasonable lawyers’ fees and other legal costs or legal costs, not fees, of petitioners representing themselves, if your claim was filed on a reasonable basis and in good faith.

For a death, you may be paid:

up to $250,000 as a death benefit for the estate of the deceased; and

reasonable lawyers’ fees and other legal costs or legal costs, not fees, of petitioners representing themselves, if your claim was filed on a reasonable basis and in good faith.

At least they will cover your lawyer costs for your kid dying

She actually has made herself look pretty bad and obviously has not done her research…the overall benefits of being vaccinated FAR outweigh the very, very small possibility that being vaccinated may lead to autism. There is absolutely NO real evidence as to the true causes of autism. Even if being over vaccinated was involved, it would only be a small factor in a larger number of variables. It's unfortunate that her son Evan has autism, but instead of latching on and trying to desparately find someone or something to blame, she should be focusing on how to best help Evan live a happy and fulfilling life.

Jenny McMarthy is perpetuating a theory of autism that is not founded in research. Displaying her emotions, although a true depiction of her feelings, is her right, the public denouncement of vaccinations is only doing harm to the general public. Evidence exists to discount her theory, yet people like her are still insisting this link. As a researcher studying the genetic causes of autism, I understand the need to find a cause. But because she is famous, she gets air time and the public is misinformed, and parents end up sending their kids to "measles parties" to develop natural immunities.

You ppl that believe in vaccines still believe there is santa too. this is just not about autism but auto immume disorders, kids have terrible allergic reactions … when was peanut butter a dangerous killer when we were kids? Chicken pox were the childhood thing to void getting now we cannot send out kids to school with a PBJ sandwich … wake up non believers

I bet you loser parents are the parents that take your kids to get flu shots too … give your child total immunity and alllow their natural body to react and reject illness and viruses. Back to chicken pox, once you get it … you cannot get again. you get a shot for it, no guaratee that the kid will not get it … infact lets put the virus in the kid so he can pass it along. A live virus living in your kid with tons of viruses, yeah that is really healthy. if you breastfeed your kid has your immune system for at least the 1st year … DUH

Faaaack… there is absolutely NO link between vaccines and autism… it just so happened that around the time that the medical professionals finally figured out that autism existed and started diagnosing children with it was around the same time that children were being vaccinated en mass for very serious and preventable illnesses.
There have been studies upon studies, and all the VALID ones have shown that there is absolutely no correlation. She is being EXTREMELY irresponsible in suggesting that there is even any link at all, it is already hard enough to get parents to vaccinate their children, it's stupid of her to add an additional excuse for them.

All of you who say she is anti-vaccine obviously did not listen. She is PRO-VACCINE, she just wants them CLEANED UP so that they do not contain toxic ingredients (not only mercury which IS STILL in them in small amounts, as well as ether, anti-freeze, aborted fetal tissue, etc.). She also wants a better vaccination schedule so that we are not pumping our kids full of 36 vaccinations by the time they are two. Think about it, 36 different strains of diseases infesting your childs body in 24 months, I wouldn't wish that upon my worst enemy. To wrap up…CLEANER VACCINES, BETTER SCHEDULE, that is all she is saying.

People need to understand that she is not AGAINST vaccines–she is simply stating the obvious: children are given TOO many TOO soon. Some children's systems cannot handle so much disease in their systems and it attacks their nervous systems. =/ I do have a cousin who has vaccine-related autism and it's sad. It's sad because PEOPLE ARE IGNORANT TO THIS SUBJECT. People don't hear about these stories enough! I'm proud of Jenny for getting this subject out there!

It's great that she stands up for herself and all…but…MANY studies have proven again and again that vaccines are NOT the cause of autism. She is simply emotional about it, as many parents are, understandably. People like to have a simple answer for things, but Autism is not that simple. It is not caused by vaccines…There is actually NO medical proof of that.

    585

i think its good for jenny to stand up for what she believes in but there are some facts that werent shown. the rising diagnosis of autism are correlated with the new scientific studies that show different kinds of autism on the spectrum. this means that the vaccines might not be to blame when knowledge is getting increased so rapidly. ive read clinical studies on this and there is no evidence to say that vaccines cause autism. they have even taken the small amount of mercury that was in vaccines out of most of them. also, if one decides not to vaccinate their child due to the small percentage that they think their child will get autism they are exposing their child to terrible illnesses such as small pox. this can cause epidemics! it is much safer to get your child vaccinated then to not and risk them and other children to terrible infections that go away because of vaccinations.

people need to be informed regarding these vaccinations, they are not linked to autism; about the mercury in the vaccinations the company removed the mercury years ago & the rate for autism is still going up. autism is also caused by mothers who drink during their pregnacy & no one talks about that. another cause for autism is genetics read an article on cnn regarding a mother who went to a sperm bank & meet with 5 other moms with the same donor & all those kids also had autism that was the fathers genes think about it be inform then go on to national tv & inform others take a biology 1 class & inform yourself of the facts good luck to all of you who go for the celebs who have no facts just emotional information.

I read her book, which is amazing btw, and she does not say 'no' to vaccines. All she suggests is that you give them at different intervals than the way the doctors do it now. Makes sense to me - give vaccines when a baby's body is more apt to process it safely.

PEOPLE….she is NOT saying we should not vaccinate our children….she is saying they should be spread out and an appropriate dose for th child. I insisted my child's vaccinations be spread out and would only allow two at a time.

Jenny's position is not good or helpful to children in any way. People who live in the USA do not see first-hand what preventable diseases do to a population. Diseases such as polio are on the rise in third-world countries, and if you have visited such places, you bet your last dollar you would have your kids vaccinated. Vaccinations save lives and the alleged link to autism is just that - ALLEGED. People who do not vaccinate their kids are gambling with their children's lives and being irresponsible parents.

As someone who has worked with autistic children for 6 years, I have seen the horror these parents and kids go through. I've worked with 250 lb, 17 yr old boys in diapers. Kids who bite themselves until they bleed. Kids who give themselves concussions from slamming their heads into the wall. Jenny isn't saying vaccinations themselves cause this- listen before you rant, people- and no one is sure exactly what causes autism…but lawsuits are currently being won concerning vaccinations and autism- in fact, there have been numerous articles about it in People magazine. This is an epidemic. Autism WILL affect all of you, if it hasn't yet. If you feel strongly about autism, consider donating to AutismSpeaks.org. I have raised $6000 so far, and they accept donations of any amount. Help these wonderful kids.
