These diseases are not eradicated, merely being held at bay because other more responsible parents vaccinate their kids. This creates a "herd immunity" that prevents outbreaks of these diseases and has been the reason your children have been protected. You should thank the others who vaccinate.
I feel for Jenny and her son, but to be so disrespectful and spead misinformation is in poor taste. I personally am going to take the opinion of someone who has dedicated their life and career to research over a mother's intuition. I do wish Jenny the best, and may there be a cure for her son.

For all of you saying "she's not a doctor," you're right. However, you'd be surprised at the amount of research she's most-likely done. As most of us parents who have children with Autism, it's been put on us to figure out WTH is going on and WTH we need to do to help our kids. The medical community is there to push the public health agenda. Most autism parents are NOT anti-vax, we're PRO INFORMED CONSENT! Give me ALL the f'g details and allow me to determine if and when my child should get shots. Test titers…see if there are antibodies present. If there are, determine when the next booster may be needed.

Jenny McCarthy is ABSOLUTELY wrong!! I can empathize that she is upset about her son, but clinically there have been NO relevant studies proving that non-mercury vaccinations cause autism. All vaccinations in this country are non-mercury now…the only ones that even contain mercury are flu shots and if you get yours early enough in the year, it is mercury free. Also, YOU CAN REQUEST TO SEE ALL VACCINATION INGREDIENTS…Sure, there is a increase of autism in the US, but that is because they have broadened the definition of what autism is, so OF COURSE there are more cases being reported. 90% of all pediatricians(who went to undergraduate, graduate, medical school and residency)will tell you that NOT vaccinating your children is the most ignorant thing you can do. Are there risks with vaccinations? ABSOLUTELY! But the benefits TOTALLY outweigh the risks, and the precentages are soooo incredibly low! They also need their vaccinations on a NORMAL schedule..NOT 30 shots between the ages of 3-5. Children cannot attend school in this country without being vaccinated, thank goodness. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT be misguided about this. Read up on the topic and don't get your information from Jenny McCarthy…not the most credible source. She needs to stick to Weight Watchers and Playboy…not misguiding parents about vaccinating their kids.

There is no longer mercury in vaccines! Why do people keep saying there is? And as for post-vaccine seizures causing autism? I can imagine long enough seizures or subsequent hypoxia causing brain damage and delayed milestones. Or rare cases of encephalitis caused by vaccines leading to brain damage. But that's not the same thing as vaccines being the direct cause of autism, with autism being a developmental disorder separate from "mental retardation" or brain injury. And yes, I am a doctor.

I don't really want to argue the merit behind either view's claims, but I do know this:
People who have to raise their voice and tap their nails and get defensive about their personal experience to show a point aren't participating in a intellectual debate stimulated by facts. They are being ignorant.
There is nothing praiseworthy about Jenny McCarthy's performance here.
Let's not only give these "doctors" the same vaccinations we give children, but give them a comparable dose. A "doctor" should receive about 10 times the amount a small child receives because they are about 10 times larger. Let's see if the adult body would handle the onslaught of poisons entering directly into the bloodstream. At least the adult had time to have their immune system mature where a child doesn't so this is not even a fair comparison. These "doctors" who harm children should be treated as criminals just as anyone else who would hurt a child. Vaccines are a huge money-maker for pharmaceutical companies and the medical industry. The media protects their profits like attack dogs. Anyone who is protecting these industries is obviously part of it.

She's crazy. I've worked with kids with autism, and she is crazy. It MAY have worked for her son (he had a very high functioning case of autism), but other children suffer for their whole lives!!!!! get with it Jenny! There has been NO proof that vaccinations cause Autism. You are born with it, plain and simple. be educated people, teach yourself, because she has no idea what she is talking about.

Sorry guys, but the autism-vaccine link is a myth and so is the whole "autism epidemic." I know Jenny McCarthy means well, but she is actually spreading a lot of misinformation about this disorder and it's a shame. I should know. I am a researcher and I am a sibling of someone with autism. When you're in the mood to read something a little more challenging than this blog (not to knock Perez, which I read every day), look at articles written by Gernsbacher and others who explain that the diagnosis numbers are being inflated by the reclassification of less severe cases and by incentives put in place by government funding. Jenny McCarthy is smart enough to understand this, and I wish she would get past her own son's experience and look at the evidence objectively. I understand firsthand the pain of this disorder and I wish it were as simple as changing some vaccines or using a special diet. Sadly it is not. Don't stop vaccinating your kids, people!
Re: ashlee – Really??? U are born with AUTISM? Every case I have worked on, when these children were babies, they were developing as your typical baby would. Of course some had a few delays but for the most part these children were talking, pointing, had eye contact. Then at about the age of 2 1/2 -3 years of age, they just stopped and were diagnosed. To say you r born with autism…I strongly disagree. Most cases show that these were typical developing kids which clearly proves they were NOT born with AUTISM.

Re: kelofnc – Sorry but as a doctor the whole reason why the immunisation schedule starts in infancy is because they are the groups at highest risk of morbidity or mortality from the diseases the illnesses are targeting. If everyone decided to start immunising their children at two years old we would have an enormous pool of completely non-immune children developing life-threatening diseases at the age at which their bodies are least able to cope with them. I don't know if you vocal minority have ever seen a six week old baby dying of whooping cough, a five year old with post-measles encephalitis or a newborn infant permanently and severely disabled by rubella, but none of them are pretty. The mercury link is firstly false in stating that "all vaccinations have mercury in them" and secondly has been repeatedly disproven in the literature. The autism link is also disproven in the literature but is frequently falsely associated because the schedule times the MMR vaccine at a time of life where the signs of autism (which is an inborn brain disorder) first become apparent. Go to the developing world where the immunisation rates are low, look at the child mortality and morbidity statistics and then come home appreciating the fact that you needn't fear that your child will be lucky to make it to adulthood.

Jenny doesn't know poop. There is no conclusive evidence based on meta-analysis that vaccinations can cause autism. She needs to be informed of scientific evidence and not base her arguments on anecdotes. What she is really expressing in the interview is the emotions of an angry mother.
Autism Spectrum Disorder affects everyone differently. Therefore, successful treatment will affect everyone differently too.
NO ONE has the right to say what may or may not help an idividual on the autism spectrum- ITS CAUSE IS NOT KNOWN. we damn well need to find out. she needs to get her emotions in check but even so she is raising awareness of the disease. Parents should still get the immunizations. Check with the pediatrician-make sure the vaccinations are not preserved with MERCURY. The vaccination theory has always been related to the mercury.

My 8 1/2 year old nephew is autistic. He was developing way above normal before his first vaccines. For families of autistic children, the tragedy never ends. I just worry what will happen when my sister, my brother and I are gone? Who will take care of our boy? Actually the vaccines with thimerasol were not expired until the year 2004. Many still have trace amounts of thimerosal and the flu vaccine still has the full amt of thimerasol. While the trace amts singly may not amount to much when you put 5-7 vaccines in to a child at once those trace amounts are now a very large amount.
Thimerasol is not the only ingredient that is a major concern. Aluminum is way up on the list and has been linked to disrupting the brain function and causing alzheimers. Again each individual vaccine contains small amounts of aluminum but when combining 5-7 vaccines at once those amounts skyrocket. MMR the vaccine most commonly linked with triggering autism never contained Thimerasol. However it's believe the measels virus in the vaccine can live in the gut and disrupt the flora.
in the 1980's children received a maximum of 10 vaccines, autism rates were 1 in 2000 children. In the year 2007 children receive 36 vaccines by the age of 2. The autism rates are now 1 in 150 and more prominent in boys than girls. That number is steadily climbing as just 2 yrs ago it was 1 in 166 children with autism.

You do not need a medical degree to be able to research and understand medical journals. Most doctors and I'll stick to pediatricians as they are the ones to do the vaccines, spend less than 1 day in all of their years in med school learning about vaccines. Mostly what they learn is vaccine = good just do it. If my 56 year old father can research vaccines in one day and come to the conclusion that they are not good then anyone can. And while I am not anti-vaccine I am very pro information. The CDC pink pages and the VAERS database are very enlightening reads. Read about each diseases, when it was introduced to the public (not developed) and when the disease was on the decline. Read what is in the vaccines! I'm not saying don't do it, that should be each parents choice for their child. I am saying that there are TOO many vaccines being pumped in to children TOO soon!

That is absolutely false. You do not have to vaccinate your child for them to attend school. There is this thing called EXEMPTIONS. Every state has at least one form and many have all 3–medical, religious, and philosophical
Thermisol is not completely out of our vaccines. In 2001, thermisol (a mercury based preservative with a longggggggggg shelf life) was taken out of vaccines - BUT - doctors were still allowed to finish their stores of it. Guess what – that means it’s still running around in vaccines through 2008. Thermisol was added to vaccines, around 1987 – from 1939, when the first vaccines came out, through 1987, the incidence of autism was 1/10,000 births. Not so bad (unless it’s your kid). From 1987 through present – the statistics have risen to 1/150 births. If you believe the american medical association and our drug companies have our best interests at heart – you’re an idiot. There is a lot of money at stake here. Thermisol was only pulled out – over growing ‘noise’ about its possible long-term/catastrophic effects. Most of the general public, just buys the party line: oh, we took care of that in 2001. They know most won’t even know what thermisol is, nor care. So long as it’s not their kid.
My daughter's pediatrician gives the MMR shots in 3 smaller versions than the full shots, the doctors have given in the past, there is less reactions to the vacacines in smaller doeses and doctors feel it's much safer. Ask your doctor's about giving your children the shots in smaller doses less frequently, and it will give your childrens immune system a chance to recover.

I'd like to point out that Jenny has never offered false hope to anyone. Her continually notes that diet and supplements have helped HER son, but may not necessarily work for everyone. Her commitment to raising awareness about this possible route of treatment when other things aren't working is phenomenal. She's informed, she's intelligent, and she provides evidence that vaccinations 'too quickly, too soon' are causing problems in children's health. We're not talking a correlation between autism and vaccinations, but cold, hard, numbers. It's not a graph with dots in one direction, that would mean absolutely nothing. The reality is, the AMA is even starting to recognize and publish journals on the fact that these vaccinations may be the leading source of autism in males. She she notes, STRICTLY MALES. Parents do not want to admit their child has a genetic disorder because that would put the blame back on the parents, for the genes their child has inherited. Get vaccinated. We know vaccinations prevent death. We do not know it causes autism.
A beautiful, healthy, LIVELY baby boy was born in March of 2001. 2 weeks ago, I got to formally sign off of him never receiving a high school diploma. He’s only in the first grade, but I/we/his teachers, pretty much had to call time on him. There’s simply no way he can complete any standard first grade functions. Sad, since he’s been receiving early intervention/special ed services since the age of 3. He’s 7, but still essentially trapped at ‘2’. They’re going to start him on vocational training soon. They think it will take him THAT LONG to develop functional job skills.
The mom in me always had hope he could recover from the MMR vaccine….
He rolled over on his own by 4 months. Hit all of his milestones on time. He was bubbly. Cute. Had so much personality. At 1, he stood up in his high chair to respond to Dora’s questions. He’d do leg lifts in imitation of Steve on Blue Clues. He knew his own name, and could say it while beaming.
And then he got his MMR vaccine. He got it late. I was sloppy about showing up on time for well baby visits. He ended up not getting his MMR until 2 years old.
By the time I got home from the doctor’s office, he was already asleep. He slept for the next 18 hours. Deep sleep. We couldn’t wake him. I chalked it up to the nurse’s reminder that: he might sleep a little longer tonight. But don’t worry…. That’s normal.

When he did wake up – he was silent. Months went by, still silence. He sucked on his shirt. He was listless. The most active he ever got – was to get up to open and close the door repeatedly. He’s never been able to say his name again. A garbled noise comes in its place on occasion.
I suppose he was just one of those ‘acceptable’ statistics. A bit hard to swallow – when every day, I watch someone trapped in endless rituals……. And once upon a time, I remember a little boy who had a whole future ahead of him and his possibilities were endless.
He’s still beautiful though. Sweetest little guy I’ve ever met. I just think he had just as much of a right to a life as the next new baby.
Does he know what his life could have been? I can only guess.
But I suppose I should just be happy that he doesn’t have whooping cough. Or the measles. All of which are treatable.

I have stayed up all hours of the night for 2 years reading about court cases, legal documents & medical facts on this subject. Parents who lost their homes because of the high medical bills that their insurance won't cover. That's what you do when you find out your child has any disease.

CURE FOR AUTISM = DISCIPLINE. Say no to your kid. When he throws a fit, punish him. Tell him it's wrong to do bad things. Tell him what is socially acceptable and what's not. Give him RULES. Autism is a social concept. Why is it rising? Bec parents refuse to tell their kids NO to anything–including unacceptable social behavior. A simple–STOP YELLING IN PUBLIC–with consequences and learned behavior will take over. It's true. The other "autistic" kids are just slow. It's ok to say NO to a child.

My son had the exact same reaction-we started intense assistance through the public school district. In home speech therapy and tutoring at 3 yr old. Pre K 4 school for autistic kids. INTENSE. those teachers do no ENABLE they redirect constantly. I knew he would grow out of it and he did. He is 8 now and a genius and right back on track. His latest ARD showed no signs of Autism. He is social, engaging, independent and most important, loving and kind. The teachers he had would never let him do what he wanted–there were immediate consequences to his tantrums, etc. I mirrored this at home. No giving in just because he was diagnosed Autistic. Now there are no signs. No indicators. WORK AT IT. Don't give in to the label. INSIST he is treated like a kid without Autism. NEVER EVER LET HIM SLACK. He will get over the immunization poisoning.

Jenny is actually very well informed. She is involved in research about autism, and helps present information on the disorder to professionals at conferences across the country. With regard to your other point, Jenny did say in her highly emotional rant that she recognizes that vaccines save lives. You missed her point. Her point was that children are receiving TOO MANY vaccines TOO SOON, and that they should be spread out over a longer course of time. Sir or Ma'am, the rate of autism is now up to 1 per 150 children. Part of that is due to doctors' awareness of the disorder, and it's resulting increased diagnosis. Part of it is due to a clarification of the factors needed to diagnose disorders on the autism spectrum. But part of it is also due to an actual increased incdience of the disorder, which must be caused by some sort of environmental influence. We need to start figuring out what that influence is. If that means spreading out vaccines, looking at what our children eat, and analyzing their childhood experiences (TV vs. sensory-play experiences, etc.), then let's do it. If you don't work with these children or have one of your own, it's likely that the impact of this disease will be lost on you.
How stupid is everybody on here who thinks that Jenny said that people should not vaccinate their children. She acknowledged that vaccines save lives (go back and listen again). As a medical professional, I think she needs to check her references. Vaccinations have helped decrease/eliminate diseases like polio, menigitis, measls, mumps, rubella. There has been no proof that vaccinations cause autism and they have been around since the 1800s.
I like Jenny McCarthy and the awareness she is bringing to autism, but she needs to think of the masses of people that may listen to her, not get vaccinated and subsequently bring back/worsen these diseases.
In the belief that the shots were causing autism, England *greatly* reduced the number of childhood vaccinations. Guess what? Autism rates were not affected. Not at all. The rate should have dropped drastically, but it didn't budge. This is the best evidence to date that childhood vaccinations do *not* cause autism.

DID ANYONE "WATCH" the show?? Jenny said and has been saying for some time, that we need to take a fresh look at how we administer these vaccinations. She said they should be spread out. I believe she never said not to get them at all. It is fact, that the drug companies saved 75 cents per shot by combining vaccinations. People my age didn't have thse vaccinations combined, and our generation also did not have a massive outbreak of autism. I don't know why people feel so passionately about discrediting the possibility of the link between the two.
As the parent of an autistic daughter I wish Jenny McCarthy would just shut the f*** up! I don't know what caused my daughter's autism. I do know that I have two children, both were vaccinated, one is autistic. my activism on my daughter's behalf is better spent on what she needs NOW as opposed to who is to blame; We all go through mourning for our child, and anger and sadness, sometimes on a daily minute by minute basis- I've tried the diets and the interventions, I have stayed awake nights, I go to endless OT, PT and speech therapy appointments…

This clip is a small representation of her beliefs. Jenny believes that vaccinations need to be researched more because there can not be a "one size fits all" attitude to them. The human body is different in all people, so why is it safe to presume that something that vaccinates one person couldnt hurt another if they had different genes. I heard that children TODAY receive in the area of 36 vaccinations by age two as opposed to, 10 nearly 17 years ago.
Just saying that she may be on to something. There could be a link because Autism rates have definitely risen in the past 15 years or so.
First of all, she is speaking only of her son and a couple of random cases. Everybody has a different reaction to everything, including treatments, illnesses, and of course vaccinations. It is estimated that the immune system needs the boost shots and the vaccines they are currently giving to the population. If she takes for a second the mortality rates of children in poor countries that do not receive vaccination and children in the US, she will probably stop bitching about her son dying in front of her because of a REACTION. In this case, it was due to the vaccination (which I have read but haven't found a link between this), but plenty of people have reactions to seafood, peanuts, and even BBQ sauce. Should we say there is a relation between those foods and autism??? Or vaccinations and other things liked genetically modified foods, preservatives, cloned meat, and other things that I'm sure she gives her son????

Re: pb – The child had a "mitochondrial" disorder and it is now believed that the vaccination was the trigger. However, she had a pre-existing condition. Even the father of this child went on record saying that he does not think vaccinations are bad, they were just bad for his child.

i dont think its all the vaccines but the age and amount that are givin at a certain age that is the concern. the combinations of vaccines that are givin. i have a 3 month old that got theyre 1st set at 2 months. 4 shots at one sitting. i was very concerned about my child, but was fine. now i am concerned with combinations. so ur damn well sure i ask to possibly and safely with my doctor if they are options to get the vaccines in a more safe way. it seemed to me that they double them up for a convieniance factor, and nothing more. its very very scary!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Autism becomes more apparent at the time of development that these shots are routinely given. The correlation in timing is a coinsidence. Several years ago DPT shots were blamed were SIDS; and as a bereaved parent I understand her grasping at straws; but she is causing more damage that good.

I just have a question - did your son also begin to get better through special diets - or just the intensive therapy/ABA like approach? I've tried mine on special diets in the past - but he's 7 and 40 pounds. When we did the diet, he was 3 and 40 pounds. He refused to eat ANY of it - and after 2.5 months and 12 pounds lost - we ended the diet. So, I guess I'm just wondering if 'the special diets' are necessary for significant improvements? Jack is very very small. (his system 'runs' all the time and thus he SLOWLY gains weight, if any).
